Yikes - absolutely crazy. I don't understand it. These kind of drivers (and they are typically taxi and white van drivers - I've found HGV drivers to be pretty considerate) seem to think being behind a cyclist is a threat to their masculinity and that they have to overtake at all costs. My solution is to cycle fast and assertively through such narrow gaps (taking up the entire road if necessary) so as to prevent them from overtaking. Let them overtake on my/your terms, not theirs.
The police, the driver, the taxi licensing office, and I, all disagree with you. His in sane manoevre dangerously forced me into an emergency stop, and was both illegal and irresponsible.
If you would do something like that while driving, then don't drive. Seriously.
I cycle in central London and come across these idiots all the time - I'm seriously considering whether or not to start to 'carrying' my keys in my right hand for these sorts.
All well and good until you get charged under UK weapon laws. :P Which, I've just realised, is a charge that could be used against drivers who threaten to ram cyclists who annoy them... They are carrying their car with intent to use as a weapon...
