Avesse risolto questi problemi forse ancora oggi canterebbe bene.
The young Carrerras, singing beautifully before blowing his voice out on heavier roles than his level of technical accomplishment could sustain. He responded to such roles largely by pushing and forcing, with predictable results. And he was always a poor actor, given to expansive gestures unrelated to anything else.
@brian181able The strain and wobble were pretty obvious after JC's leukemia, and perhaps before. Compare him thus to Corelli, Bjorling, Gigli, Lauri-Volpi, Domingo at the same age.
@brian181able If you believe this, you must listen closely to other tenors at the same age: Caruso, Gigli, Lauri-Volpi, Bjorling, Corelli, Del Monaco, Domingo, Pavarotti. THEN compare them to the later JC. The difference is obvious to the careful listener who has also heard many others in this same repertoire.
He does look a little pudgier than usual. But yeah, he did lose quite a bit of weight after those leukemia treatments. He's still pretty thin today, and has a pale complexion. He also tires easily now (but this may also be due to his age along with the effects of chemo and radiation). But thank God he's still alive.
Carreras never sounded better. I'm not a big fan of his, but this is a splendid performance which lacks the histrionics that he tended towards in later years.
the beauty of having had these wonderful singers in our midst is that we can choose which ones we prefer, for my part, I choose Carreras in this role any of the week and 3 times on Sunday!!!! he was truly a magnificent artistic and sensitive soul...it is a shame certain people can't or refuse to acknowledge that. But, to each his own. I'm just glad I am one of the fortunate ones to appreciate Mr. Carreras's art.

Poi sempre questi paragoni Pavarotti, Domingo Di stefano ecc.
I cant get over that beautiful voice.. there is always a little sigh or cry in his voice.. its what I like best about it... the tone is just so damn beautiful.
maybe this was at a time when Pavarotti used to cook for him! I read that somewhere, that Pav cooked for him when they were staying in the same hotel together. Great vocal...
@eurydike - Yes, actually I think this was his only overweight period, and it was not a very long period. He is by USA standards "a little chubby" here. And in general right up to this day he "cuts a fine figure." Fantasic tenor, good-looking guy.
@eurydike Almost underweight - ha ha ha ha - oh what am I laughing about -
that's darn sad! (Except to the multi-billion dollar USA weight loss business - which of course has no REAL answers to this American plague.) Hey what am I doing sitting here. Must go for a long walk. :~))
If you already like JOSÉ CARRERAS check now THE 30 TENORS in my playlist SUPER TENOR ARIAS ( including CLAUDIO SOTELO performing ARIA DEL CIRUJANO as a world première ) and tell me which one you prefer !
But, please, dont forget, if you can, to help the JOSÉ CARRERAS LAUKAEMIA FOUNDATION ( Fundación Josep Carreras contra la leucemia ) !
No it had nothing to do with his cancer. The vocal decline was his own fault of pushing and open rather throaty singing which eventually took its toll. Of course in the late 70s early 80s the voice was the most beautiful of its day.
How can you say cancer had nothing to do with it? Even being simply tired or sleepy will affect your voice, how can a deadly disease not affect it? Probably, as you said, poor technique had a good hand in his downfall, but surely leucemy took a heavy toll on him...
Ok...that's completely wrong. Most of Carrera's voice decline in the last 2 decades was originated from the effects of leukemia and cancer treatments such as radio and chemotherapy that damaged his vocal cords.
His vocal decline is evident as early as four years after his debut.
You can here his throaty singing here, take a listen to the 'nel', I believe that's an F... the sound is one of the most throaty unpleasant sounds I've ever heard.
It was a very beautiful voice, but the placement was awful, the support too weak and the passagio incorrectly approached. What a waste.
You want an example of a singer who sings this better?
Technically, the young Pavarotti far outsang Carreras. But Pavarotti's voice wasn't quite as suited to this role. I think the young di Stefano sang this better.
I have listened to this aria time and time again but I cannot hear the sound you speak of.
Were you talking about "l'arte NEL suo mistero" or "Ma NEL ritrar costei"? cause in both cases the diction seems flawless to me.
And about his technique you are certainly right in saying it was not perfect and that Pavarotti's was much better. Despite this, I find Carreras' voice to be of better quality and way more emotional and that, to me, makes him much more pleasant to listen to.
I had the pleasure of hearing him live several times at the Met. He had one of the most beautiful tenor voices ever heard, but very unfortunately made some poor choices, and sang way out of his fach. As a result, his voice was pushed way out it's capabilities, and it became more tired and strained sounding over time. Then he became ill, and that kind of finished it more or less. The meltingly beautiful tone remained always, and his Cavaradossi remains outstanding.
Carreras' has to be one of the most even voices ever--the color is so rich, and his musicality and legato were so intact... this interpretation is breathtaking.
One of the best of the great tenors of all times, brilliant and unique, rich colorful voice, fantastic Carreras in his best. In our present times, technique has dominated over pure art, like everything else... Technique is very important, but should not be an end in itself. Carreras not only had it, but most importantly, had a truthful artistic heart which shows up uniquely in his voice. A great tenor. Thanks for posting this video.
An absolutely spine-tingling, hairs on the back of the neck rendition. What a sweet, pure voice. Anyone who criticises Jose here is bonkers. Bravo Maestro!
Spectacular!!! All those Carreras detractors should listen to this. In many ways, more thrilling than Pavarotti in this role, and THAT is hard to do. The young Carreras was perfect.
MUCH more thrilling than pavarotti. While he DID have a more technically superior voice than carreras, carreras had this amazing vocal color, this warmth and confidence that just tore your heart out. i LOVE this guy.
I LOVE this! I had to listen to it again, eventhough it's already in my favorites. I've listened to some other versions - Pavarotti, Alagna, and Villazon. Carrera's is definitely my favorite - strong and passionate. Makes the hair on my arms stand up!
think of another comment for fuck's sake. anyway, there's no conductor that honors the piano markings on the score for this aria (for what reason i have no idea) which makes shouting this piece necessary to be heard at all over all those strings.
a chubby Jose...but what a voice...really in prime shape here before the vocal decline and a more stressed sound that came to dominate in later years.
Frankly he is NOT FLAT at all on the last B flat so check your piano, he is right on pitch, great lyric spinto tenor who went into heavy roles too soon and got sick and that combination hurt him. This is wonderful singing and the high B flat is not strained, Vibrato was not bad yet on this day anyhow, when was it? Heard him in 75 sing Tosca in Calif. voice was fine for it then and was darker then early Pav. Reminded me of Di Stefano whom I also heard in Tosca in 1959!
Wow!! Maybe he wasn't "supposed" to sing this, since he's a lyric tenor, but I think he does an excellent job!To me, he has a lot more spinto quality to his voice than some give him credit for. It's funny to see Jose a little pudgy here!..He's usually quite slender!
He alwats thought that had a bigger voice that the reality of his nature. This is not the repertory for his voice. Great vocie but he pushes so much! But he prefeered this than have the coreect, few and only the same operas in his pocket as Kraus did with his career... more longer and more perfect. Please, don' t tell me that his illnes was all the cause of his voice destruction... or may be Di Stefano gave to Mr. carreras the same carpet that runied his vocie as well?
the wobble was already on it´s way here. despite the fact that he was not sick at this time. I put him with Di Stefano a great lyric voice that started singing heavy to demanding roles to early making the voice suffer far to early.
People were discussing his weight. Several videos from late 1979-80 show him pudgy. He was back in shape for boheme at the met in the winter of 81. He has such a beautiful voice here, but he pushes it and make me uncomfortable on the B flat.
Wonderful.

Diction wasn't an issue for Carreras as he placed his vowels in his throat which makes it easier to maintain precision of diction.
Carreras had the more appropriate voice for Cavaradossi.

PickBit, I salute you sir. I agree with your well thought appraisal of JC's voice. It was
a thing of beauty. At the 3 tenor concert in 1990, he returned from cancer treatment
and sang beautifully. His Chenier that night was unforgettable. Bravo Jose!

I must add that the top register always changed the color of the middle register. I totally agree

No doubt about that, and he had fairly good power as well, the tragedy of his illness was indeed great.
Luckily he survived, but still one of the greatest voices ever was taken away.

Spectacular!!! All those Carreras detractors should listen to this. In many ways, more thrilling than Pavarotti in this role, and THAT is hard to do. The young Carreras was perfect.
libro07 3 years ago 7
MUCH more thrilling than pavarotti. While he DID have a more technically superior voice than carreras, carreras had this amazing vocal color, this warmth and confidence that just tore your heart out. i LOVE this guy.
OettingerCroat 3 years ago 5
Cavaradossi he is for sure.
sevenevanheaven 3 years ago 4
I LOVE this! I had to listen to it again, eventhough it's already in my favorites. I've listened to some other versions - Pavarotti, Alagna, and Villazon. Carrera's is definitely my favorite - strong and passionate. Makes the hair on my arms stand up!

well shouted!
maestraconway 3 years ago
think of another comment for fuck's sake. anyway, there's no conductor that honors the piano markings on the score for this aria (for what reason i have no idea) which makes shouting this piece necessary to be heard at all over all those strings.

a chubby Jose...but what a voice...really in prime shape here before the vocal decline and a more stressed sound that came to dominate in later years.

Lluitador33 3 years ago

Frankly he is NOT FLAT at all on the last B flat so check your piano, he is right on pitch, great lyric spinto tenor who went into heavy roles too soon and got sick and that combination hurt him. This is wonderful singing and the high B flat is not strained, Vibrato was not bad yet on this day anyhow, when was it? Heard him in 75 sing Tosca in Calif. voice was fine for it then and was darker then early Pav. Reminded me of Di Stefano whom I also heard in Tosca in 1959!
pearlmuth3 4 years ago 5
Wow!! Maybe he wasn't "supposed" to sing this, since he's a lyric tenor, but I think he does an excellent job!To me, he has a lot more spinto quality to his voice than some give him credit for. It's funny to see Jose a little pudgy here!..He's usually quite slender!
novice1959 4 years ago 5
Yeah from late 1978 - early 1980 he was a little pudgey.
mcknighty11 4 years ago
cocoloco707 4 years ago
He alwats thought that had a bigger voice that the reality of his nature. This is not the repertory for his voice. Great vocie but he pushes so much! But he prefeered this than have the coreect, few and only the same operas in his pocket as Kraus did with his career... more longer and more perfect. Please, don' t tell me that his illnes was all the cause of his voice destruction... or may be Di Stefano gave to Mr. carreras the same carpet that runied his vocie as well?

Carreras sings with such passion. I just love him and Tosca is one of my all time favorite Operas.
Deborcmpf 4 years ago 2
the wobble was already on it´s way here. despite the fact that he was not sick at this time. I put him with Di Stefano a great lyric voice that started singing heavy to demanding roles to early making the voice suffer far to early.
Bjoerrelli 4 years ago 2
did you see an interview with Karajan where he says that in the Verdi Requiem, only Caruso may sing it like Carreras did.
ilbacioditosca 4 years ago 2
No, he implied that Carreras sang it better.
He did not appreciate the full beauty of Caruso and did not know enough about voices to give people serious advice.

People were discussing his weight. Several videos from late 1979-80 show him pudgy. He was back in shape for boheme at the met in the winter of 81. He has such a beautiful voice here, but he pushes it and make me uncomfortable on the B flat.
