It technically can be Aeris or Aerith because the Japanese pronunciation is 'Earisu' . The 'su' is aoften used t replace 'th' e.g pronouncing Smith (Sumisu) or just and S e.g the Desu. Although I tend to go with Aeris because in VII it was that, if you call her Aerith it isn't exactly wrong, since in Kingdom Hearts they called her that. And both FF and KH are made by Square Enix. It just depends on what we think. :)

Even now, there is still tears coming to my eyes seeing this, ten years later. I remember how I couldn't get it. She can't be dead, because she is Aerith, because she is a playable character in a rpg and playable character don't die! Then Cloud drops her body in cold water, I still couldn't accept it. I just tough I'll get her back with the submarine! At least her body isn't lost. I think I got through denial at the final scene, where I had to face another end : the end of final fantasy VII.

I actually thought this death scene was lame when it came out. It has no buildup, all of a sudden Sephiroth drops from the sky and she dies. Alys' death scene from Phantasy Star IV was probably the best in any RPG series to date, that and Mareg's sacrifice in Grandia 2. But this is lousy. Where did Sephiroth even come from?

Plus, if you see Cloud's emotions at 3:10 - 4:05, even if it's still 'pixelated' back in those Playstation 1 era, you can really see the DETAILED and in-DEPTH emotions the game creators are trying to depict there...

combined with the music, and the death of the main character, this easily makes one of the most tragic, saddest, and MEMORABLE moments in the history of RPG/video-game....ever!

Also, the music is goofy as hell and kinda ruined the entire mood. Especially that completely random change from dramatic chanting to inexplicably triumphant horns thar. Have no music at all would have worked vastly better from a dramatic perspective, as would rendering some blood so it doesn't look like she's being noclipped to death.

1. the use of choir music for the final battle (Sephiroth's 2nd form: One Winged Angel)

2. the Summons' awesome graphics (remember people, in that time, it was a HUGE transition from Super Nintendo/SNES-tiny bits graphics into THIS one!!),..not to mention Sephiroth's Supernova!!

3. the complex (& also very 'religious'-related) storyline & theme.

that's why I still give highest kudos to FF7, even now!

2. Yes, the graphics are great, but Square always made the best out of the graphics of every console.

Did you forget the Kefka fight in FF VI? That whole tower is packing christian imagery.

Also Kefka himself thinks he's a god amoung men because of the Magitech experiments and Magicite. Theres even a move Kefka does called Fallen angel. Not only religious but satanic as well. I respect you're opinion and all but FF VII was not the first to imploment religious stuff in his game. FF VI was. Also technically Kefka also had a Chorus singing but then again that was 16-bit.

The other great rpgs like secret of mana, chrono trigger, etc didnt have a permanent death in the middle of the game, plus the music and mood of ff7 most likely added to the intense shock to aeriths death.

Oh, yeah. You missed out on a lot of great games and moments. FF2 was one of the darkest in the series, and it was only 8-bit. Characters die all over, especially in 2 and 4. There's one character who loses her father, and attempts suicide by throwing herself off a cliff. I think that's a lot sadder than Sephiroth randomly dropping from the ceiling and stabbing a character I didn't even care about to begin with.

When she died I was like " Meh, Cloud quit your bitching Tifas way hotter anyway!" So i was confused when cloud was all mopey because on my play through, they were not close. Here is the truth!

Aerith was praying that Cloud wouldn't go nuts and try to hurt anyone.

Sephiroth saw a bug on her back and tried to get it off but accidentally impaled her. He pulled out in shock and Cloud got all pissed. They killed Jenova mourned for a few seconds and Nanaki (RedXIII) being the rational one asking why don't they use a phoenix down? So Cloud uses it and carries Aerith down to the water. Then realizes that Aerith doesn't want him, he drowns her. Sephiroth is innocent!

This is perhaps the only time in a game i really felt connected to characters, and i played it for several years ago.

I like to think of movies, games as nothing more than entertainment, cause its not real, it's just illusion, This however really was one of the scenes that makes you bottled up with sad emotion like you lost something important, even though it's a video game character, it felt real. Really powerful scene, Final Fantasy 7 had lots of fun in it, the game is pure gold :D
