Not everyone wants a dog out of the pound. With pre-owned dogs, you never know what kind of past they might've had. Older dogs esp. would be a lot of financial trouble.

Most people don't breed just to sell regular puppies to people anyways - a good breeder's main goal is to produce one that is show-dog quality. The dog who have small flaws are sold. These dogs are usually required to be neutered and spayed.

The best breeders make sure that all the dogs they breed go to good owners. Some even offer to take back dogs who can't be cared for, instead of letting them be pounded..

I guess I don't see much difference between a "breeder" and a "puppy mill". Some are worse than others, and I guess you give those a different name. I also don't see much difference between a "show quality" dog and a mutt. A dog is a dog, judging them on beauty is a ridiculous human thing to do.
