Elis inigualable.
Sublimo !
(desculpe a todos pra meu portunhol ruim, sou italo-belga...)
When Elis sings it feels like she is having a dialogue with some higher power, her performance so intense that you cannot take your eyes off her. This is what all great singers have, and Elis was born to sing.
I feel my heart break with her voice ... is like an angel touching my soul ... I couldn't saw her in life ... but my parents gave me this great gift to grow up listening her voice ....
Besides (Allmusic):Although not as overtly political as other singer/songwriters of her generation (e.g., Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil), Regina was not shy about criticizing Brazil's military rule. While touring Europe in 1969 she told a journalist that her country was "being run by guerrillas." Normally this sentiment would lead to either jail or exile (or both in the case of Gil and Veloso), but Regina's enormous popularity protected her somewhat from any public government retaliation.
Continuing the paragraph (Allmusic): Her tempestuous nature aside, she commanded the respect of Brazil's leading songwriters, who lined up for the chance to have her record one of their songs, and for much of her short life was the country's most popular female vocalist.
From Allmusic: Temperamental and moody, capable of fits of extreme generosity that could quickly turn into moments of rage-filled paranoia, Elis Regina was one of the most ferociously talented singers to emerge from Brazil. A perfectionist who was frequently dissatisfied, Regina drove herself and members of her band relentlessly, leading to her being dubbed "Hurricane" and "Little Pepper" by musicians and music journalists.
Elis was by then acknowledged worldwide for her talent and incredible voice. She didn't need to sell anything. Few years afterwards she left us to rest peacefully. You still are our beloved singer, Elis. Brazil loves you for all you are!
To begin with, Elis is all but selling anything. Those who know her work and her life understand perfectly well that she was indeed feeling every single word of that sorrowful song. Elis, we do miss you! Now you have your deserved peace.

Elis navegou aguas muinto complexas..

Move over, Piaf, and Judy Garland, too. I have never seen anyone sell a song like this.
