well corocodile once said to luffy that devil fruits can be trained that´s just what luffy did with gear second and gear third. It doesn´t matter what kind of abillity you have it´s just a matter of how you use it
I truly think that it wasnt only Gear 2nd that made him stronger. Blueno says himself that "when I fought this man at the mansion, he didnt possess strength like this" BEFORE he goes Gear 2nd against him. The urge to drive forward and save Robin? Perhaps...
And Sanji was able to nearly break though Bleuno's tekkai on the train, and presumably only came up with Diable jamb following that event in order to get around that skill.
They all grew in strength in response to need and desire.

gear second is strong , at water 7 arc , luffy cant even lay a finger on lucci and he's fighting on par with his zoan type now

Kaku says Zorro has grown since they last met.
