  • @roadragecustumes yes 4.0 and do I need a special tool to remove the cooling fan?

  • @ElBEBE4262 Yes. Get a fan clutch wrench set from your local parts store or watch my Chevy 2500 HD water pump video for a short cut with an air chisel.

  • So how different from a 1999 jeep grand cheroke

  • @ElBEBE4262 4.0L ?

  • so how different in a 1997? my son is coming over tomorrow and I told him there are so many people on you tube....thanks

  • Great video! Apparently these pumps like to go out around 100k? My 2004 WJ 4.7L's pump just started leaking with 98k on the clock. Much easier to replace than some of the other ones I've done in the past. :)

  • I had this same problem in a 2006 cherokee. I changed the water pump and thermostat just the same way you did, but it is still overheating. The fan is kicking on. Do you have any suggestions?

  • Damm, I wondered what that screw was at the end of the top hose. LOL. Could have saved me a lot of worry. Knowledge is power! Thanks for the video, I need to go out and bleed my engine of air.

  • great now to get my wife to trust me to do it! doesnt sound good when i say i learned how on youtube!

  • Great video! What are all the torque specs when installing, or where can they be found? Thanks

  • thank you excellent ilustration .. must be a master

  • Hey there roadragecustoms. My Temp Gage is in the red zone. Any suggestions before I head of to the mechanic? Just had my fan belts replaced, air con cleaned out. Cheers mate.

  • Good vid. Im subbed

  • Very helpful- especially enjoy the pistol part.

  • very informative, helped out a lot thank you.

  • Thanks for the video. It's a 100 % walk through. Is it similar to the v6 model because that is what I have?

  • Thanks for the video. I have one thing to add. When removing the old water pump, I simply removed the alternator (two 15mm bolts and one 13mm bolt), and removed the stud bolt that is just to the left of the alternator that sticks out a couple of inches, using a crescent wrench (probably an 18mm). Remove those two things and the water pump can come out easily. I never had any issues with the pump hitting the power steering pump hose. I didn't have to remove the fan or anything else.

  • flashlight and pistol= test drive. good vid. thanks

  • Very nice vid!!! Thx

  • Thanks for the vid its going to help me change my pump. How did you get the fan off?? another opinion would be helpful

  • @deankruse31 This one didn't have a belt-driven fan. I sometimes use a long chisel to bump the fan clutch nut loose, but you can get fan clutch wrenches at some parts stores with the loaner tool program.

  • thanks for the advice i was wondering where the thermostat was located on one of these, now i know and ill be sure to use this advice thanks again

  • Thank you! I am doing this for a friend tomorrow, and I need to double check what I was in for.

  • Just got back from the dealer from my oil change. Don't laugh, for 300.00 I got 28 oil changes, otherwise I'd do it myself. Service tech gave me a price of 600.00. Saw you video. Right on brother. Thank you very much. All of an hour and a half. I thank you andf my family thanks you. San Francisco Mike

  • Where is the weep hole located on the 4.7 water pump? I see nothing on the bottom side, but a spot on the top. Is that the only weep hole?

  • @mrtosh I really don't remember. It may have had a rubber plug over the area where the weep hole was.

  • hey supp, these jeep have shocks all four sides rigth

  • @hp11208 There is one shock absorber behind each wheel.

  • "Got my flashlight and my pistol...ready for a test drive"... Now thats a t-shirt idea.. ....gr8 video

  • no sealant on the water pump?? and how can i test drive it without my pistol!!!

  • Where do I send this guy a check?!?! Great work! Mine went out yesterday. I'm calling a mechanic friend over to help me replace it but this vid makes me feel so much better about the process.

  • awesome vid. my heat went out so troubleshooting time, changing the t'stat! thanks! great lefty vid!

  • are these good jeeps? & what diffrent from the limited to the laredo?

  • @eclipsegsx765 I don't know what the difference is between Limited & Laredo, but I now work at a 4x4 shop & I think "good Jeep" is an oxymoron.

  • @roadragecustoms

Thanks a million for your video. It made changing my thermostat a snap!

  • @roadragecustoms the differences are trim packages, interior and exterior. other than that..... not much!

Although im certain you can get the 4.7 ho in neither, and only the overland.

  • @roadragecustoms bull theese assholes just didnt take care of it

  • I am not a mechanic but I have turned a few wrenches in my time and I need to replace the thermostat in my 04 jeep grand cherokee overland 4.7L. I have called about 10 different mechanics in my area and all of them want to charge me for a minimum of 2.5 hours of labor! You make it look easy...is there something that I am missing because I don't want to try to do this myself and get in over my head...

  • @TheMatthewbsmith I checked my labor time guide. For some reason, it shows 2 hours for the thermostat & only 1.5 hours for the water pump. I didn't have any problems with the thermostat and I don't see why it would be any trouble for a do-it-yourselfer. If you have any problems, and I don't think you will, let me know & I'll try to assist online.

  • @roadragecustoms The thermostat should take about 10 minutes and the water pump about 30 minutes in reality, but since they generally doublethe time it should be about 1 hour for the pump and 20 minutes the for the thermostat. THey are both fairly easy

  • alright ill try that and see. and ill let you know thanks again

  • thank you for responding! but what is the BCM, and what could be done about the problem with the key? what could have caused this to happen?

  • @JGray85 BCM = Body Control Module. You'll need to tow it to a Jeep dealer unless you have a DRBIII Scan tool or equivalent . You may have damaged your key, or you may have another electronic issue. If your key has a gray cover on the end of it, there is a chip that sends a signal to the vehicle inside of it. If it is black or aftermarket, it doesn't have it. Each key sends a different signal that has to be learned by the BCM with the scan tool.

  • hello. my mom has a 2004 jeep grand cherokke 4.0. well it tries to start but dont and there is a light that comes on that shows a key with a circle with a line though the key. we though it was the key but it wasnt its been sitting almost 4 months now. if you know anything that could be wrong with it plzzzzzzzzzzz let me know. thanks

  • @JGray85 It sounds like a key problem. I think the vehicle isn't recognizing it. If the key is correct, there may be a problem with the BCM or the key needs to be relearned by the vehicle.

  • I loved this vid - I am a shadetree mechanic in training and this video helped me to replace my thermostat in my parents JEEP - I ddi it myself and saved at least $170.00 as this is what labor would have cost me - since the auto repair shops in chapel hill nc stated it would cost since it takes 2hrs to replace the thermostat. Keep in mind it did not take me 2hrs - but then again I did not take a 1:00 hour break while the clock was running.

  • I'm doing a water pump on this same vehicle tomorrow with the same 4.7 litre engine. Thanks for the excellent walk through Dave. My work is cut out.

  • I have to do a thermostat on an '04 with a 4.0L engine. Is the installation the same?

  • @sadbuttru2 The 4.0L thermostat is on the top. The thermostat housing has a heater hose & an upper radiator hose on it. Most likely you will have a paper gasket instead of a rubber O-ring. So, no, they aren't the same. There are some similarities, but I think the 4.7L is easier.

  • If i have an '01 jeep grand cherokee laredo and i want to replace my thermostat should i follow these same steps only change out the thermostat and not the water pump or are they combined?

  • @1234kaylam If you have the same engine size, yes. Just don't remove the pump.

  • Any reason you didn't use any RTV Sealant? I hear some people recommend that it be used when installing the new pump. Does it make any difference with potential future leaks?

  • Comment removed

  • @gumbiotch This pump had a good, thick rubber o ring. I would usually use black or gray RTV, but I didn't think it was necessary.

  • @roadragecustoms Thanks for the reply. This was a great video. Thanks for posting it. The only good one I've seen for this repair.

  • Thanks for posting!!! you just saved me alot of time, money and frustration.

  • anyone know where i can get a electric water pump for a jeep?

  • @NBSValo Go to summit racing's website & search for remote mount electric water pump: Meziere Enterprises WP136S. It isn't application specific, but can be made to work.

  • what tool did you use to open the bolt at 5:38 ? is it a air tool

  • @her1132 That was a 1/4 inch drive air ratchet. Those bolts aren't extremely tight. A regular ratchet would work, just not as fast.

  • haha so cool: Got my pistole. Wer ready for a testdrive :)

  • I notice you didn't remove the fan. I am replacing the same water pump (on 4.0l model). Instructions call for removal of fan and shroud. Is it an unnecessary step?

    Great video! Thank you.

  • @hundoracer If you have a belt-driven fan, it's going to be in the way. If not, try to see if the new pump will fit between the shroud & engine without removal before you start.

  • @roadragecustoms

I don't have a belt driven fan. It is part of the shroud and it is electric. Trying to remove the 4 bolts to remove the shroud/fan is nearly has hard as anything else. You can't get to the bolts!!! With the shroud removed, it would be 10x easier. Back into the garage to see what I can do without removing the shroud. I will check back later for your feedback.

  • @hundoracer I think I know what you're talking about. The worst bolt on the fan shroud is the lower one on the driver's side. You should be able to get to the bolt from under the Jeep with a swivel socket & long extension. Even after the bolts are out, The shroud can be difficult to lift out of the vehicle. It will want to bind up on the rad hoses & AC lines, or maybe trans cooler lines. You'll have to lift each side a little at a time & work it past the lines & hoses. I hope this helps.

  • Thanks! This is an Excellent Video!

  • why the fuck do you have a pistol?

  • @compboy65 The rifles are too hard to maneuver inside of a vehicle.

  • very nice, must've been hard to work the camera and the car at the same time :).

  • engine blocks on jeeps are bullet-proof but the extra stuff around them are not. :(

  • @Dillon1108 You may want to see my other video "Jeep throws a rod".

  • @roadragecustoms well thats a wrangler, i meant cherokees ;)

  • amaging

  • jesus these coolant systems for these jeeps are terrible. I had to replace every part of the coolant system. That includes the water pump, thermostat, radiator, radiator hoses, fan, fan relay. They aren't hard to replace, but jesus that is a ton of shit to replace for a car under a 100k

  • @drippinblood28 That sounds like an angry prayer.

  • @roadragecustoms i love my jeeep, but crap i just wish it was a little bit better built. Still, i wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!

  • @drippinblood28 If cars were built too good, I'd be out of a job!

  • dont EVER leave without your gun LOL

  • Good Job, now i know what I have to look forward to next week.

  • Great video it helps me a lot ´´thankyou ´´

  • You have by far the best how to videos on here. Great attention to detail. First channel i thought was worth subscribing to and did. Hope these vids bring you lots of business

  • have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee with a 4.7 and im leaking coolant from the thermostat housing. any suggestions?

  • If the housing is rusted bad, replace the housing. Check the hose & clamp. Wouldn't hurt to replace the t-stat since you have to replace the gasket anyway. Is that what you wanted to know?

  • gotta love those wanna be dodges same kind of waterpump with the screw on fan stupid setup but it works

  • Just started mine, got it all done except when I pulled out the thermostat I got splashed lol, and Crappy Tire gave me the wrong one!! grrrr, long walk down there for the correct part.

    Thanks again for the walkthrough.

  • Very nice instructions going to do mine right now. :)

  • Very instructive. Please feel fre to send any other work you've done on Jeep GC.

    Thank You

  • Excellent Video!! Thank you very much, gave me confidence and saved hassle of going to the dealer!

  • Excellent production! Really well done. (But I think I'll take mine to the shop.)

  • Thanks for the video. A garage wanted to charge me $450 to change out the pump on my 2004 Wrangler Unlimited. I know how much the pump costs at AutoZone so I'm doing it myself. I'll have it done for about $100 with coolant. One question though, my last water pump change was about 14 years ago and I took out the radiator to do it. Isn't that advised to prevent damage?

  • I only remove the radiator if I can't remove the pump otherwise. Time is money.

  • Whats the purpose of driving with a pistol

    ?

  • Same reason I have a spare tire. I hope to never need it, but it's there if I do.

  • ahaha great answer

  • great camera work and perfect lighting, i could see everything clearly

  • As the semi-proud, but cash-shy owner of a 2004 WJ Overland, you have no idea how much these how-to videos will save me. Thank You!!

  • Thanks for watching & commenting! It's always good to hear that people are getting some benefit out of these videos. I'm not cash shy. Cash is Dave shy!

  • can this repair work for a 2001 ?

  • I believe the 2001 has a belt driven fan that the 2004 does not have. If so, the fan blade and fan shroud should be removed from the engine compartment together. Otherwise the 4.7L's should be similar.

  • You were right. thanks man. I had the worst time getting off that fan.

  • awesome.job!!!

  • Thanks!

  • good job on the video dude

  • Thanks!

  • love the vid. i just did mine. thanx. Alot easier with both hands,lo.l by the way what you said tword the end, at 7:56 "befor you start the car, wash them filthy hands " that part made me crack up. anyway let shutup before i make this comment into a book . again great vid 5 stars....

  • Thank you so much

  • Thanks a lot but i haven`t this electro device :D

  • If by 'electro device' you mean the air ratchet that I removed the bolts with, a standard 3/8" drive ratchet can be used.

  • thanks man, because of u, i did this myself on my 96 jeep grand cherokee and saved 500 dollars at a mechanic!

  • Great, I'm glad I could help. Thanks for the comment and for subscribing!

  • Good video/writeup.

  • Thank you very much!
