Your elected MEPs have the least amount of power. Even their suggestion powers are limited. They are not allowed to suggest a new law, only to suggest amendment for a draft law. In the end its the EU Council who decide if the suggestions have a chance or not.

I agree, but decentralisation can be done on supranational level as well. The more we will try to preserve the state-divisions, te more we will lose in the long run. The problem with EU is, that it has been given trivial powers at first, states are reluctant to get stripped of the more important ones. US is a completely different case - states have a say in unimportant issues, others are in the hands of washington.
That is actually not true. The US constititution only gives the federal government control over national defense, international treaties, and interstate commerce. Our federal government has goten around our constitution over the last 100 years, by blackmailing the states. For instance, the drinking age is determined at state level, but the federal government recently decided that interstate road monies would be withheld from any state that did not raise its drinking age to 21.
In Arizona, driver's licenses are handed out by the Department of Transportation; in Michigan, it is the Secretary of State, in California, it is the Department of Motor Vehicles. The state of Texas still has dry counties, where alcohol is still banned or at least limited. In Michigan, it is illegal to a make a U-turn in an intersection. It is not in other states. In Texas, you can qualify for in state tuition after residing in the state for a year w/out schooling. Not so elsewhere.
You never actually hear Klaus stating what is his political project for the EU. And I don't actually think the EU needs one (EU should be a free trade bloc, and who needs institutions for that?). I have the feeling that his agenda is: let us keep discussing institutional reform, so that while we're quarreling about that, we are not actually discussing what really matters for the citizens of the EU. In that respect, Klaus and others have been very successful and I fear will continue to be.

27 Prime ministers from within the EU countries and the president of the EU will decide who is going to be selected in private/secret negotiation.
In the Lisbon treaty the EU Council would be given the right to amend treaties.
Commission
Propose all laws and they are unelected. The president of the Commission will be chosen by the unelected EU Council (15 years).

Your elected MEPs have the least amount of power. Even their suggestion powers are limited. They are not allowed to suggest a new law, only to suggest amendment for a draft law. In the end its the EU Council who decide if the suggestions have a chance or not.

Then I have to fish it in Norway, because of all the EU legislations and unelected bureaucracy. In Norway elected people in the government can propose a law. The law proposals are out for referral (broadcasted in media) before they can vote for it.
Recently one Politician almost became mentally ill when he proposed a treaty, he went away for several weeks because of pressure from the people. Too bad for the politician, but it was a Victory for the Democracy.

Seriously though he makes sense about referendums. I'm trying to understand the EU, first you had a constitution conveniently transformed into a treaty which has been rejected by 3 countries. It seems this is being forced down your throats and you're going to have to swallow it regardless.
If this century turns out to be an inevitable US/China one, as an American I'd like to see a strong EU included.

Strong Europe = Independently thinking, independently acting Europe, certainly much more so than today.
The kind of "strong Europe" that toes the U.S. line only exists in the heads of well-meaning Americans, and your toadies here in the EU.

Its easy math. EU has always been a thorn in Russians' side. Klaus, too, is a fierce critic of a greater EU integration and moreover is a keen supporter of Russian influence in the CZ, which is borne out by some of his favorable comment and actions (see Georgia crisis, gas conflict, meeting with Russian agents, russian mafia). Russia tries to infiltrate my country and eventually EU to create economic and political ties so that she can eventually extort us. It tags together like a box of bricks.

Do you listen to him, you can hear him nothing but grinding off his own fabrications and fancies. He speaks with a tone but not a content. I'm not saying everything is perfect with the EU (far from it) but his man personifies what seems to be an eastern european ritual which consists of wanting to be part of something and as soon as they become a member they claims it is corroding their souls. There are medical terms which describe this behaviour very well.
I'm glad he always has a mic around though. It was about time Europe had its own Ann Coulter.

I agree Spenner. Democrasy is not as it used to be, as in ancient Greece. The people used to vote for every law, whilst now, we have parties, not people making many laws: Big difference.
Another thing is the justice, via the courts. All democratic countries are now not free from oppressive human laws! Why? Because they disregard God's laws. Deutronomy states, Thou shalt not add nor detract the word of God (the bible).
The law is the bible in the UK, at least originally.

A recent poll here in Germany for Die Welt newspaper showed that 85% of Germans consider the EU to be a dictatorship ! A different poll in Austria revealed that most Austrians would vote to leave the EU if given the chance !
Europeans have been LIED TO by the EU : no plans for a superstate, a European army, Galileo is only for civilian use; the Irish NO vote will be respected etc.
VOTE NO against lies and corruption..& for a truly democratic EUROPE !

have you seen the other video from an klaus speech on this channel? many people are leaving the hall because they won´t listen. they should argue against him and not ignore what many people think. the same with the irish, the french and other NO to the current lissabon treaty. is that a foretaste of the EU democracy??

The President of the German liberal party FDP in the European Parliament, Silvana Koch-Mehrin, said last week : "if the EU itself applied for membership of the EU, it would be refused. The reason would be: no democracy".
This week a report was leaked by a British liberal MEP showing that MEP's can pocket a million Euros from 5 years at the un-democratic EU "parliament" from scams/fraud/false bookkeeping.

Why do people like klaus want us to return to the 18th century? Nation-states have cause enough harm and should be abandoned as a concept. There is no european demos? Yeah, sure, but the question is 'why'? Most of the people don't even know that the majority of the legislature is being formed in Brussels. If they knew, they might be bothered a little more There are ways how the EU can become more democratic, but nation-states are not the answer.

the more power gets concentrated in 1 place the more corrupt said power will be. look at the USA/Russia/China! More power to regional government means better democracy and less bureaucracy. I think Klaus will give us a better run for our money then that dipshit Sarkozy did.

I agree, but decentralisation can be done on supranational level as well. The more we will try to preserve the state-divisions, te more we will lose in the long run. The problem with EU is, that it has been given trivial powers at first, states are reluctant to get stripped of the more important ones. US is a completely different case - states have a say in unimportant issues, others are in the hands of washington.

That is actually not true. The US constititution only gives the federal government control over national defense, international treaties, and interstate commerce. Our federal government has goten around our constitution over the last 100 years, by blackmailing the states. For instance, the drinking age is determined at state level, but the federal government recently decided that interstate road monies would be withheld from any state that did not raise its drinking age to 21.

In Arizona, driver's licenses are handed out by the Department of Transportation; in Michigan, it is the Secretary of State, in California, it is the Department of Motor Vehicles. The state of Texas still has dry counties, where alcohol is still banned or at least limited. In Michigan, it is illegal to a make a U-turn in an intersection. It is not in other states. In Texas, you can qualify for in state tuition after residing in the state for a year w/out schooling. Not so elsewhere.

You never actually hear Klaus stating what is his political project for the EU. And I don't actually think the EU needs one (EU should be a free trade bloc, and who needs institutions for that?). I have the feeling that his agenda is: let us keep discussing institutional reform, so that while we're quarreling about that, we are not actually discussing what really matters for the citizens of the EU. In that respect, Klaus and others have been very successful and I fear will continue to be.
