@jnthnbush That's utter nonsense. The navy is our greatest military power. They can stop anyone trying to invade by sea before they ever get close to our shores.
It is NOT the secretary of Defense that is at fault, it is the SYSTEM that is flawed. As long as we live in fear and finds the need of military structure, this will continue unabated as it is.
War is either declared by one leader or a committee, if we were to subject it to popular vote, it will NOT ever happen. Just send teams of people to negotiate and bash-each-other by hand, keep sending teams until an agreement is reached !. Thats how to prevent war. The system feeds on your fears!.
Spending in 2009 was approx 3.1 billion with a deficit of 400 billion. In 2010 spending was approx 3.5 billion but the deficit swelled to 1.4 trillion. Even though spending only went up 4oo billion the deficit went up 600 billion, this would indicate that government income dropped by 600 billion. The economy is in bad shape when government receipts drop by 20% approx, so maybe now is the time that corporate America needs to step up and pay more taxes or spend on growth one or the other.
The 685 billion dollar military budget would not seem that bad were it not for the fact that it does not include the cost of caring for 33,000 wounded soldiers.
The occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan were largely funded through supplementary spending bills outside the Federal Budget, so they are not included in the military budget figures.
A 1.5 trillion dollar budget gap cannot be closed solely on the back of the military, but that doesn't mean their budget should go up AGAIN either.
In 1970 at the height of the Vietnam war the per capita spending on defense in inflation adjusted dollars was less than $3,250 per person. Today with a larger population and much larger military the cost of the cost of the military is over $4,000 per person yet we only have less than 50,000 deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan.
I can't believe it but there are actually right wing hawks like the Heritage Foundation that pretzel logic stats to say that military spending is at an all time low. LMFAO
I just got a glimpse of the future. Donald Trump liquidates and gives Gates his warchest. Many see it as a great sacrifice from Trump and he's elected in 2012. Then he destroys the world with his army of robot Mini-Trumps.
Then I wake up and remember that Americans would never vote for a man with such a ridiculous hairpiece.
Defense spending has been declining relative to GDP. The national debt is the result of TARP QE1 and QE2. What the military needs is an anonymous way for personnel to report waste and abuse without fear of reprisals from the cnain of command.
@drewzillasaurusrex Defense spending as a percentage of GDP is at an all time low, but spending in inflation adjusted dollars has been climbing since the Vietnam War, both sides pick the data that supports their position. Additional things that should be considered is defense spending as a percentage of the government budget and as a percentage of income. Also the current occupations in the Middle East are funded through supplemental appropriations that are not reflected in the military budget.
Russia Today is so fucking stupid and full of crap. The defense budget is only 25% of the united states entire budget, that percent is not increasing. The only thing increasing and making us broke is obama care and welfare and all that crap!
Look, as a former military man myself, there is a tremendous amount of fat that can be cut from the military industrial complex. First, stop all military aggression in the Middle East, then cut nearly every base overseas. Alot of the military is in fact waste and should be cut in half at least!!
@TheInnateMind That will not happen, as US is moving towards Stalinist socialism; as rest of world's natural resources become scarce, future Americans will work for free by making cheap goods for BRICS, and continues its military expansion with its own untapped resources.
To the unfortunate inhabitants of planet America, this is hardly news at all, but rather the status quo. The continuous "defense" build-up/warmongering has always been one of the occupation government's most profitable rackets. It ranks right up there with its mind-boggling extortions.
@cbdesade EXACTLY! i live in america and its exactly that people who act like this news is "news" its ridiculous why cant anyone else see that if america dosent have a legitamite export i.e oil, rice, or timber then they will go thru desperate tactics to keep our head above water.............selling weapons to other countries under the table plain and simple

Robert Gates has outed himself as a criminal. He steals tax payer money to fund ridiculous programs that do negligible difference in our defense capabilities. No 'enemy' in the world has the technical capabilities to make a bigger dent in our defenses than in the past decades. Recent attacks have all proven to subvert trillions of dollars in technology - so the budget is nothing more than theft and which funds astronomically expensive play toys. Get the Pentagon on a diet!

>...I think if we cut military spending we can bring the money home...
No, you can't. 1. Because you haven't enough money for actual consuming level even with 0 (zero) spendings on wars. 2. If not spending on wars, none would give you money for keeping actual consumption level.
The way out is higher taxes and cutting all spheres: salaries, spendings on medicine, insurance, cheap loans etc and reducing consumption at least in two times. Or even three. Only THAT would help.
"The defense budget is not the cause of the deficit and debt problem that we have as a country." Wow. Since you know what's not causing it, you must know what is. Enlighten us.

4 billion a day in just interest on the national debt.the wars have only managed to make a few very rich and many poor and dead.freedoms have dwindled while we r being told these fake wars are for protecting our freedoms that we are loosing.the great bamboozlement of america.
@selvmordspilot It is a rational motive if the money isn't yours. The Cold War ended and the defense contractors were losing money. The US public was hoping to cut defense spending. So the defense contractors and the mercenaries got together with their minions in the government and military and pulled off a false flag terrorist attack. As a result (as you can hear on the video), billions of US tax dollars were given to the defense contractors and military to fight an enemy that never existed.
@nodmessenger Typical argument of the brainwashed. I expect you will respond to this by calling me "conspiracy theorist" or something like that. Then, you'll accuse me of being part of some fringe political group. You don't want to address the real issue. The US government lies to its people as a matter of course. That is their domestic policy. That goes for 9-11, the War on Terror, the economy, and a whole list of other issues. It's obvious to anyone not in denial. (I lived there for 23 years.)
It's suicidal to run a country like this!

0:47...WOW! I never thought I'd hear the Secretary of Defense go on TV and openly admit the motive behind 9-11.

@earthsbullsh : the motive was to spend money? That's not a very rational motive, from any point of view.
selvmordspilot 9 months ago
@selvmordspilot It is a rational motive if the money isn't yours. The Cold War ended and the defense contractors were losing money. The US public was hoping to cut defense spending. So the defense contractors and the mercenaries got together with their minions in the government and military and pulled off a false flag terrorist attack. As a result (as you can hear on the video), billions of US tax dollars were given to the defense contractors and military to fight an enemy that never existed.

@earthsbullsh The real motive behind 9-11 was the first golf war.
