100hp/2200 lbs = .045 power to weight for the Mazda 2 That really isnt that bad. 100 hp seems like a minuscule amount but it really isnt underpowered. Throw an exhaust, intake, coilovers and some sticky tires and you have the ultimate efficient driving machine while staying under $15,000.

@NotARealUTubeAccount Go drive one. Mazdas are made to be fun, no blazing fast, not economical, but fun. It certainly achieves that from when I drove it. There are better logical choices out there, nobody doubts that. Honestly it doesn't feel any less powerful than the competition when you drive it. Weight makes a huge difference.

one thing he doesn't mention is how fantastic the handling is in this vehicle. this car beats the 350z in the 60 mph slalom...with only 100hp. i bought one about 6 months ago and couldn't be more satisfied. with my credit, i was going to have to dish out $10,000 for a p.o.s. used car to get financing, instead i started shopping new cars, and this one won. no doubt about it, the car isn't a luxury car, but it definitely isn't as cheaply built as many of its competitors. get the 5 speed.

I currently am looking at one of those Evos or STIs because I like the turbo and AWD, but to save money i might consider a Hyundai Veloster with a 6-speed manual because it weighs as much as a Mazda Miata and has 140hp, perfect for a great handling little car you can throw around.

Here's the thing with fuel economy, engine size is only about a third of the story. The Chrysler Pacifica we currently have is the one with a 3.5L V6 (vehicle is more than 5000 pounds), it SUCKS at acceleration AND fuel economy. I can barely go 320 miles on a $60.00 tank at $3.50 a gallon. Our other car, a 2003 Lincoln Town Car with a 4.6L V8 (pretty much same weight & nearly half a million miles on the clock) gets about 350 miles to a $55.00 tank at the same $3.50 per gallon (because you don't

@cupramac that might be because we do stricter testing because everyone drives a lot harsher. The United States of America is not all city life also. There are also way more vast country roads than Europe, which probably is another reason why Europeans achieve greater gas mileage. I think it would be cool if we tested european cars in American EPA methods and vise versa...

Also it actually has better leg room in the rear and I think alittle more space in the hatch then the Fiesta. Even the Mazda5 a "mini" minivan comes in manual transmission. IMO stick shifts should be more popular here like in Europe and pretty much the rest of the world!

Now if your question really meant why they make cars with steel wheels, then the answer is simple: It cost less. It's still much cheaper to stamp out a set of steel wheels and paint it black, than add 4 plastic wheelcovers than manufacture a set of lightweight alloy wheels. Since the buyers of small and economy cars are more budget conscious, you'll find more steel wheels on those.
