I did a slideshow using this song and was blocked because Youtube said there was a possible copyright issue from WMA. So, you could watch my slideshow but there was no sound. Here, there is nothing to see and all one hears is Bobby Hebb singing Sonny. We ought to put our two videos together.

I always took this song to be about a women, but I recently learned he was coping with the murder of his brother. In that light I can hear a growing anger in his voice as it builds.

@martymefurst That 'growing anger' is just the key going up a semitone every verse and his voice changing character as it rises. May well have written it that way for that effect, but that's what's happening.
