Every soloist has the right to play his own solo if the leader would give his okay, what Ray McKinley obviously did. And the trumpeter did quite well, in my opinion.
By the way: Bobby Hackett couldn't stand his own solo. He said he could have played it not only backwards, but also sidewards. And he played cornet, not trumpet.
I think it may be a guy called Bobby Hackett who could also play guitar when required. The solo on the original recording, is to me, one of the great melodic trumpet solo's of all time. This is very poor in comparison
The oringinal trumpet solo was indeed by Bobby Hackett. He was a trumpeter who had a lip problem, so he was mostly a guitarist for Glenn Miller. Sometimes, his lip was good enough to play a solo on trumpet, like in the oringinal String of Pearls.
I have a dvd I just received on Harry James and the setup is the same-a show called-the Big Bands-that originated from Chicago in the 60's-this maybe the same series
I've been a Miller and jazz fan since I was a teenager and have had the pleasure of seeing Ray Mckinley and Tex Beneke here in Florida. Also met Al Klink in London in the 70s when he toured with Benny Goodman.
Never did get a chance to meet any original members of the Miller band, but would have liked too, but I did see Herb Miller with his big band in England, and just looking at him, you could tell they were brothers...
@CCJazzmen2 i have talked with paul tanner who played trombone in glenns band from 38to 42 and he was also one of glenns friends as well!! hes still alive and lives in california hes 94 this year !!
This would not have been a ballroom but a studio set up, still not 100% sure that the show was called bandstand, but did read something somewhere quite a while ago...I see by your channel that you are a Miller fan....
You are right about the mid 60's, but like you, do not know the location in the USA, and yes that bandstand was used a lot with these telecasts, was the show not called bandstand!!!!maybe someone out there can give us some more information....

If you have Glenn Miller's Centennial Celebreation from BMG released a couple of years ago, it comes with a DVD with more scenes from this program.

At the begining of the trumpet solo, ther's a pioano accompaniment that sounds a bit like kind of blue, don't you think?
very nice!

I believe that this video was filmed at Disneyland, as the theme park featured name bands all the way up to the 1980s.

I didn't know about the show Bandstand. I don't think it was ever shown in England. It would seem that the bandstand is just a studio set then.

I am guessing this is from the mid 60s. Do you know the location, as I have several big band videos where the same bandstand is used.
