Honestly the pentium 3 is very solid and performs well but really can't beat the performance of a pentium 4, who ever got that info must have got it from a moron. The pentium 4 (dependent on which model you have) has a lot better IPC and pipelines The only one's that haven't beat the p3 is the celeron line. Buit a 1ghz pentium 4 (supposing your using a 370 socket) will be the equivelent of the pentium 3, then step it up to a 478 and it will blow the 370p4 and p3 away.
@MrTpengineer The only was the p4 478 can be beat is if you had a p4 with ram older than ddr and had a 370-478 converter with a pentium 3 on a 478 board with ddr and better graphics.
Well actually it's mostly the gpu that's doing all that rendering but, yeah, that's okay, you can just make false comments on that the cpu makes the game run like that, yup, no problem. Still though, remarkably good considering its a computer from 1801.
I'm not all that surprised. The Pentium III was (is!) a great microarchitecture. A Tualatin PIII with large L2 will best a Pentium 4 clock per clock by a pretty wide margin. The only reason Pentium 4 became relevant was better process nodes and longer pipelines that allowed it to be clocked insanely fast to make up for it's crappy IPC. Luckily Intel woke up and smelled the coffee while the Athlon 64 was busy kicking their entire product line up and down the block.
@kargaroc386 lol your funny, pentium 4's are way faster, I have load's of them here, the only cpu's I got that mach the speed of the p3 are celerons, my lowest one has over 100kb more l2 that the p3. Still out performs it...
Ummm...there were Pentium III's that ran at 1200+mhz. They're called TUALATINS and there were also CELERON versions that ran at 1200+mhz so you don't need a P4 or AMD equivalent to run Half Life 2.
Which PCI graphics card did you have in mind? The fastest PCI card to date was the Sparkle GeForce 9500GT 1gb and that card should be able to handle it easily.
There was also a 9400GT and 8400GS in PCI that would probably play Doom 3 OK. Down the line from there would be the Geforce 6200 and then the FX series but they would probably not play it well., especially the FX series.
dont feel special, these are all xbox games.. and the xbox had a coppermine based PIII processor with MMX and SSE and 256k L2 cache, and a Nv2a Graphics controller very similiar to the Geforce mx4200 ,and 64 mb ddr ram. the xbox did all this with less specs than ur is, so im not surprised.
5:18 the reason why there i no such thing then a Pentium 5 is that Intel changed the naming scheme. If Intel had continued the old naming scheme, the Core 2 would have been called Pentium 5 and the Core i3/i5/i7 Pentium 6.
@vorkev1 I don't know if this is true, but it seems unlogical:Pentium D is Smithfield/Presler based and Smithfield is basically just 2 Prescotts on one die. So the difference between Pentium 4 and Pentium D is the same as between Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad or AMD Athln 64 and Athlon 64 X2.But on the other hand marketing decisions are not always logical. But I googled for "Pentium 5" and I only found that Intel originally intended this name for Prescott, but they decided to leave the Pentium 4 name.
PS: I just found, that Pentium 5 might have also been an inteded name for the cancelled Tejas CPU of Intel (see Wikipedia article Tejas and Jayhawk), but this has nothing to do with Pentium D, it would have been a Prescott-successor with 65nm and was planned for 2004, but unlike Cedar Mill, it would have improved the Prescott arcitecture and it was planned to reach up to 7 GHz. I also found some other speculations about a Pentium 5 on google, but they don't say anything about the architecture.
The first P4 CPU was 1.4 GHz and was slower then the fastest PIII CPU of that time, which had 1.133 GHz, so a 930 MHz P3 is faster then a P4 downclocked to 1.15 GHz, so it can compete with a P4 downclocked to 1.2 GHz and run HL2 fluid. Some games might not run at all on a PIII even if the performance would be sufficient, which is not available on PIII-CPUs but this isn't the case with HL2. Every game which runs on an Athlon XP also runs on a PIII (but maybe slower).
Yes, I should make more computer videos, this video is my most watched videos... I was originally making just old school video game videos but none of them nearly got as much views as this one.
Rambus RAM requires you to buy matching pairs of RAM sticks, so you cannot just buy any Rambus ram and pair it up with another. Also, you cannot have any empty ram slots, instead you have to buy a "dummy" crimm rambus stick to fill in the space because if you don't, it fries your whole board. So if you have 4 slots, and you are using 2 RAM sticks, you have to put the dummy sticks in the other 2 slots or else your computer will die... very stupid in my opinion.
Minimal requirements for games just means that's what it's able to play at normal, you can go alot lower on just about any game :) The older pentoum 4's that run at 1ghz seem to have about the same performace as the pentoum 3 lol

I'm upgrading it to 1.5 gbs of ram soon, because i love it better than my fat toshiba laptop. @smokslyboltx Yeah, Vista, the OS that sucks all your power, like a vampire. Do XP pro or Seven, not Vista, please. Your performances will go up, trust me.
@fishcomputer33 It's fake man, thy are movies or something. Have you seen the guy actually load the game after closing the properties window? The game suddenly started to load. They were fast computers 8-9 years ago, but hey will not be able to run HL2 with that kind of setting regardless of the graphics card and the amount of RAM.
I see a lot of people claiming that it's fake but if you check out the comments below, you can see that there are a lot of people who have powerful Pentium 3 pc's that are capable of out performing some of the CPU's that were released a few years after the Pentium 3. No fake here, just one ballzy ass Pentium III PC.
@GamingPalooza Dude, if you want to prove this is not fake in any way, shape or form you should make a video that shows the properties tab, you leave it open and immediately start the game. I highly doubt you will ever come up with such a clip.
this is a high end p3 processor (930 is a lot in this case), you have decent amount of ram plus a decent video card. so basically thats quite possible... all these games are "original xbox" era so...
P3 processors i read somewhere shared their architecture development history with the pentium pro, and that the core 2 duo and quads also came from this architecture while the P1 MMX, PII and P4's were different. This might explain why P3's run so well. Like the Pentium pro and core 2 duos and quads rely on performance per clock while the others used brute force and higher clocks to get performance.
did you say counter strikes minimum was 1200mhz? If so then that is not the speed of a pentium 4... thats still in the pentium 3 line my friend... the Pentium 3 had standard clock speeds of upto 1.4ghz
if I was you, I would try to put more ram into your computer, at least 3gb if possible... 4gb if u can. Those minimum requirements are wrong, because i remember I was playing that game on my AMD with 4GB of ram, 256MB video card, and the game still had slow downs and lags.
@GamingPalooza FEAR 1 ? dude... ive played FEAR 1 perfectly fine on an old ass pentium 3 like this guys with 512mb of ram and it ran smooth even with some settings turned up...
@thesubscriber991 You don't need more ram. 1.5gb is mroe than enough. when I played FEAR I had only 1gb ram. However, I had a Pentium 4 @3.0GHZ. Furthermore, the FX5500 is below the standard for FEAR, unless you run it at minimum settings. Back then i had a Radeon 9800 and I could run it fine on medium, with some high, no AA.
@Fucklesticks i know the celerons suck but my laptop can run it on medium settings and it has a AMD Turion 64x2 of 2.2 gh , 960 mb ram and an nvidia geforce 6130 so u don't need a 6600 gt to run it .it can run even left 4dead 2 on low but with some lag so the system requirements for the games are lies . the games need or a lower pc to run or a faster 1 than the developers tell us .
@thesubscriber991 Oh yeah i think i know what the problem is... The 6000 series supports shader model 3.0 and the 5000 series doesn't. Maybe you can force it to run on an older DX version using a tweak.
@gaga1298 i did that but it fucked my pc . i could run the desktop only on 640x480 and 8 bit . and i bought the game from a shop so it's the original one .
The minimum for Halo is only 733MHz, but Half Life 2 is a little more demanding at 1.2GHz. HL2 is a beautifully optimized game which is capable of running at full fps with minimal hardware, and my system (7 years old, Athlon XP, Radeon 9600, etc.) can play it with everything maximized at full FPS, with no lag.
It's a shame games these days, which don't look THAT much different from HL2 and Doom 3, are so horribly unoptimized and demand so much more hardware than they reasonably should.
The P3 was much faster than the P4 compared clock-by-clock, but it simply couldn't be reliably clocked higher than 1.4-1.5 GHz, whereas the P4 was designed to clock past 3 GHz.
Amazing! Well.. Not thát amazing, Doom 3 was designed for single core Pentium 4 processors and HL2 is very scaleable, but still, very impressive. :) Have you tried running games that should be considered impossible to run? (Crysis, GTA IV and that stuff)
depends what kind of processor u have.. if u have a PIII thats 800mhz or faster... and a 4x AGP slot, u can get a Geforce FX5500 AGP card and gain quite a bit of speed from it. Also update your ram too.
i have the exact same pc as u! But i can play doom 3 quake 4 half-life 2 episode 2 Gmod everything crysis 2 FARCRY Counter-strike source prototype World Of Goo everything with no problem i have never had fps drops either.
i have that same computer or at least the looks like it. it has pentium 3 1ghz with geforce 2mx been almost 10 years no problems....the only problems i had was with the windows me >> after i installed xp its all gone
The good ol' Pentium III. Now that was one Intel's best processors until they introduced the shitty NetBurst microarchitecture. Intel should have based the Pentium 4 on the P6 microarchitecture or continued making the Pentium III and added improvements such as Hyper-Threading and an L3 cache if it was possible.
half life 2 and css is working because of your video card. The on board ram is an important roll in gaming. Try doing something thats only on the cpu. not both the gpu and the cpu. for exsample try folding at home.
my opinion some people don't realise they only need minium specifications to play Games, they spend thousands on hardware, and waste their Money till this date i play Games on my AMD 3800x2, 2 gig ram, 160 gig hard drive, nvidia 9500 512mb, does the job good simple really but these days people go crazy over hardware silly load of plonkers
PIII does 1.5x more work per cycle than the P4 because the netburst architecture in the P4 was soo slow, so technically a 1Ghz P3 is about a 1.5GHz P4
dude ill just ask a question i bought 2 sdr pc 133 ram on my p3 but it only red 128 each and when i bought 512ram it redas on 256 what seems to be the problem
The problem is probably because your PC is either PC 100 ram or it disowns 512's and downgrades it to 256MB due to limitations. But if it is cutting both in half, it's probably the fact that your board is PC-100, i believe. Try one at a time.
Pentium 3 socket 370 only went up to 1.12GHZ unless you are using a Tualatin, which went up to 1.4Ghz. There was never anything faster then 1.4Ghz and 1.4Ghz was very RARE for that slot.
i had a pentium 2 450 mhz... broke it :/, i was just messing about going on the internet and then poof! some reason the thing overheated and just fucked up lawl just build a new pootah! but the pentium 3 is massive! smaller than the pentium 2 mind you -_- tiz 800mhz, 512mb graphics card i dont know i thin i put 2 in by mistake, and i got a celeron 333mhz lol! xD
I agree with the statement that they do things they arent supposed to. I have a slot a 800mhz with 768mb pc 100 with a geforce 8800 512 ddr pci and i get 35-50 fps on medium settings across the board on hl2
too much ram? Im running a pentiumIII with 512mb @ 997mhz with a nvidia mx420...the only games Ive had the courage to put on here is WolfET and Diablo1. I might try HL-2 but i dunno about my graphics card...might handle it ill have to try and see. I just blew up my 4core amd 2.4 by clocking it to 2.7. had my ati 3850HD overclocked too so i guess it was too much for my cooling system. DIdnt even run all that better. Im worried about heat with this one too. Should I be as cautious?
All you need is a good AGP Geforce video card that runs at 4x speed... and at least 128MB of ram... Geforce FX5500 is probably the best for a PIII... but do not be afraid to run games like Halo PC and experiment with other games... PIII's are durable and they do not over heat easily.
Honestly the pentium 3 is very solid and performs well but really can't beat the performance of a pentium 4, who ever got that info must have got it from a moron. fishcomputer33 1 year ago
@fishcomputer33 It's fake man, thy are movies or something. Have you seen the guy actually load the game after closing the properties window? The game suddenly started to load. They were fast computers 8-9 years ago, but hey will not be able to run HL2 with that kind of setting regardless of the graphics card and the amount of RAM.
alxcsb 1 year ago
@alxcsb
GamingPalooza 1 year ago
@GamingPalooza Dude, if you want to prove this is not fake in any way, shape or form you should make a video that shows the properties tab, you leave it open and immediately start the game. I highly doubt you will ever come up with such a clip.
alxcsb 1 year ago
this is a high end p3 processor (930 is a lot in this case), you have decent amount of ram plus a decent video card. so basically thats quite possible... all these games are "original xbox" era so...

MirageBistro 1 year ago
P3 processors i read somewhere shared their architecture development history with the pentium pro, and that the core 2 duo and quads also came from this architecture while the P1 MMX, PII and P4's were different. This might explain why P3's run so well. Like the Pentium pro and core 2 duos and quads rely on performance per clock while the others used brute force and higher clocks to get performance.

i have a question . why i can't run fear on my pc
these is my pc
interl celeron 2,67 gh
1.5 gb ram
and a nvidia fx5500 256mb
my pc passed over the minimum of the game
it needs a 1.7 gh processor
512 mb ram and a 64mb video card
so why can't i run fear on my pc
thesubscriber991 1 year ago
@thesubscriber991
if I was you, I would try to put more ram into your computer, at least 3gb if possible... 4gb if u can. Those minimum requirements are wrong, because i remember I was playing that game on my AMD with 4GB of ram, 256MB video card, and the game still had slow downs and lags.
GamingPalooza 1 year ago
@GamingPalooza FEAR 1 ? dude... ive played FEAR 1 perfectly fine on an old ass pentium 3 like this guys with 512mb of ram and it ran smooth even with some settings turned up...
TheOnlyDuST 1 year ago
@GamingPalooza Hah I ran fear maxed out a few years ago with 2 gigs of ram.
The FX 5500 is simply too slow to run the game well enough, the FX 5 series was notorious to slowdown big time in DX9 games.
Protoking 1 year ago
@GamingPalooza My friend has 2 GB of RAM, but a newer CPU, and a Graphic Card of 512 MB, and me and her play FEAR on EXTEREME graphics :))
xxxMittensxcatxxx 1 year ago
@thesubscriber991 You probably need your video drivers updated. I have a machine much worse than yours that plays it fine.
TheOnlyDuST 1 year ago
@thesubscriber991 You don't need more ram. 1.5gb is mroe than enough. when I played FEAR I had only 1gb ram. However, I had a Pentium 4 @3.0GHZ. Furthermore, the FX5500 is below the standard for FEAR, unless you run it at minimum settings. Back then i had a Radeon 9800 and I could run it fine on medium, with some high, no AA.
a4especibot 1 year ago
@thesubscriber991 You need a 6600gt at least for that game, and celerons are not meant for gaming.
Fucklesticks 1 year ago
@Fucklesticks i know the celerons suck but my laptop can run it on medium settings and it has a AMD Turion 64x2 of 2.2 gh , 960 mb ram and an nvidia geforce 6130 so u don't need a 6600 gt to run it .it can run even left 4dead 2 on low but with some lag so the system requirements for the games are lies . the games need or a lower pc to run or a faster 1 than the developers tell us .
thesubscriber991 1 year ago
@thesubscriber991 Oh yeah i think i know what the problem is... The 6000 series supports shader model 3.0 and the 5000 series doesn't. Maybe you can force it to run on an older DX version using a tweak.

WilliamJValentine 1 year ago
The P3 was much faster than the P4 compared clock-by-clock, but it simply couldn't be reliably clocked higher than 1.4-1.5 GHz, whereas the P4 was designed to clock past 3 GHz.

The good ol' Pentium III. Now that was one Intel's best processors until they introduced the shitty NetBurst microarchitecture. Intel should have based the Pentium 4 on the P6 microarchitecture or continued making the Pentium III and added improvements such as Hyper-Threading and an L3 cache if it was possible.

tjpogi25 2 years ago
The problem is probably because your PC is either PC 100 ram or it disowns 512's and downgrades it to 256MB due to limitations. But if it is cutting both in half, it's probably the fact that your board is PC-100, i believe. Try one at a time.

Pentium 3 socket 370 only went up to 1.12GHZ unless you are using a Tualatin, which went up to 1.4Ghz. There was never anything faster then 1.4Ghz and 1.4Ghz was very RARE for that slot.

too much ram? Im running a pentiumIII with 512mb @ 997mhz with a nvidia mx420...the only games Ive had the courage to put on here is WolfET and Diablo1. I might try HL-2 but i dunno about my graphics card...might handle it ill have to try and see. I just blew up my 4core amd 2.4 by clocking it to 2.7. had my ati 3850HD overclocked too so i guess it was too much for my cooling system. DIdnt even run all that better. Im worried about heat with this one too. Should I be as cautious?
cpy06a 2 years ago
All you need is a good AGP Geforce video card that runs at 4x speed... and at least 128MB of ram... Geforce FX5500 is probably the best for a PIII... but do not be afraid to run games like Halo PC and experiment with other games... PIII's are durable and they do not over heat easily.
