it's in 5/4 because you see the measure is very short, if it was 5/8 then the beat would drag on being twice as long. whether it matters? if you're jamming with someone and tell them that it's in 5/8 instead of 5/4, then they'll play stuff twice as long or they're fills will be longer and such, which means the whole jam session would sound messed up.
@Moiez101 this bugs me too regarding the 'denominator' of the time signature. is it in 5/4 because you declare the pulse to be a quarter note (hence the 4 instead of some other number)? is it a 'quarter note' because it's the slowest beat that resets the pattern (half notes would diverge from the beat if you counted those instead)?
oh sorry, i left out an important details i guess. the bottom number does refer to how many beats each note will get so 4=quater, 8=eighth and 2=half and so on. so when you come across something like 7/4, basically you can say it out as "alright, this time signature has 7 quarter notes". hope that helped.
MCshlthead, couldnt agree with you more. The guy that made this video was clearly having fun. With that said I play the drums with radiohead songs, mainly In Rainbows but I think its more fun to play exactly like Phil. He's more of a complementry drummer.
I used to think iras a decent drummer, at least for not being a professional anyways. Then I saw this video, and now I see that I cannot compare. Nice dude! Awesome work with the 5/4 time too! Love the fills!
Well, two things. I really don't like Radiohead or this song. Sorry, but! If you have only been playing for a few years, that is great. Your technique is pretty good and you obviously have a great natural feel. So, good job...sorry I don't lke Radiohead....I saw Tom York fall into a wave machine pool once during an mtv show and when I saw him swim to the side like a baby, I kind of thought the whole cool/depressed act was really lame.
I know, I'd never want to take Phil's place either!! Just a fun song to play to, and a great context to come up with new ideas within :) cheers, and thanks for the compliment!
no problem! I'm just using plain ol' Gibraltar add-on cymbal arms, with Pearl extension clamps. Nowadays, everything's attached to my ICON rack, using those nifty square clamps.
amen! it just takes some getting used to, just like every other meter. It's odd though, i actually feel more at home playing a nice 7/8 groove than i do playing a straightforward rock beat...go figure
yes, granted, if I wanted to cover the song exactly, I should have used a basic kit with 4 pieces and just a few cymbals. However, in doing this video, my intent was to add a more "live", energetic, and jazzier feel to this awesome song. And at this point, i'd only been playing for a year, and i'll agree that i overplayed a bit. Perhaps i'll re-record it :)
It's a time signature, how you count 1 2 3 4 when drumming, 5/4 you would count 1 2 3 4 5 instead. There's more too, like 6/8 7/8 12/8 13/8 even 19/16 but that's for more experienced drummers. Not that I'm trying to put you down. I'm just saying that it's not easy.
Thanks man! I use a Coated Ambassador on the snare batter and 8" Tom, and Coated Emperors on the 10, 12, and 14" toms. Clear ambassadors on the resonant side for everything. The Auxiliary snare has an Evans coated G1 on it.
Wow, that's the exact type of example of excellenece I needed, I've been looking for a way to learn 15 steps for ages. That's some brilliant drumming, if it took you a year to get that good then hopefully I'll keep on improving if I try drum beats like this. I don't have as good a kit as you do, but I can try a simplified version :P Hell of a drum beat man!
hi there! i just want to say that was some really good playing u got great skills! i cant believe u been playing for just one year if thats true congratulations!
yes, indeed! Gavin's one of my main influences overall - his accuracy, flawless execution, and creativity are things I aspire to regardless of music style. Of course, I look up to many other drummers as well...Martin Lopez of Opeth, Lenny White, Billy Cobham, etc..
very nice job. i can see you spend a lot of time playing drums if this is just your second year. it was about 3 years before i could even attempt to play in 5/4 time. it's so confusing. 7/8 is a pain, but it's lots of fun when you can play in it. however, it takes for freaking ever.
I still don't understand one thing, I'm good in time signatures and shit... but what exactly does this song make 5/4 instead of 5/8? cause in my opinion the drumming is really 5/8(i'm a drummer too). Cause look at what you play, it's the same beat all over again, in 5 eigth notes... Anyway, great song, great playing, just a little too much here and there, but don't we all do that when we're playing without bandmembers;)
Not sure what that really means. Depends on what sound you are looking for. They are mostly dark in tone, some are darker than regular K's, A customs are a brighter alternative.

well, the bigger the kit you have, the more things you can do, e.g. you got a snare, bass, 2 toms, hats and a ride.
compaired to 4 toms, 2 snares, bass, hats, 3 crashes, 1 ride, 1 china, god knows how many splashes i think 2, and that bell thingy ontop of your a custom crash.
Cool man, you are developing great feel after only one year and change :)
I'm just getting into drums with a V Drum kit on the way. I can't wait to play along with this. I have the bass posted for this song if you want to check it out.
Great work, especially for a year and a bit of playing, but personally I'd like some more hi hats. Yours sound awesome, and there's so many opportunities to go back to them. Chris certainly does in spots you don't, and the more HH the better! :D
Sounds great though. 15 Step and Reckoner are my favourites.

I just gave this song a listen for the first time and played along. Its a very challenging cover to try and do. There isnt really a solid drum part to play along to, and you managed to create one and make it your own.
they're just the regular 13" Ks :) i would use the mastersounds, but i play some heavier music and i'd worry about them cracking or not being able to cut through.
