baling wet hay, that's the worst thing you could do. A hay barn out near our farm caught on fire that way, melted the steel beams. it took like 4 days for it to finally go out
I'm from Kansas. Both from a rural setting and a firefighter.
If you bail hay or straw wet, it can self or auto ignite. You can even stick your hand into the middle of a bail and receive 3rd degree burns with no flame or smoldering.
It's a rule of thumb around a lot of agriculture. And who knows, this could have been arson or anything else. I'm not an investigator. Ha.
Wow - I went to fire college in the city and we never covered this phenomnon. We did However learn about how rags and stuff, especially with chemicals or paints on them can self-ignite. I never worked as a firefighter though - I did EMT work for a while but I'm a pianist and had to make a choice - I respect you for what you do.
Thanks for the reply - keep up the good work and be safe out there :)

Yep, I went to fire school in Hutchinson. One of the better midwest schools. Occasionally it happens here.
It's the same concept behnd the rags, which they did tell us about.
And I'm working on my EMT now. Thank you for the support. Take care.

Unfortunately, barns are becoming a thing of the past. Go to the tarazod channel to see the Barn Salvateers rescue a structure.

It's a storage barn. Hay, straw, equipment, etc.
So feel better. Ha.
