Everything is in this universe circles around itself. The moon circles around the world. The world together with moon circles around the sun. Sun circles around itself. The Galaxy and all the stars and meteors circles around the galaxy.Human circles around themselves. Which explains us"ONE day everything in this world, universe, dunya or whatever you want to call it;WILL return to the core purpose of its CREATION
I have had the good fortune to see a traveling Dervish group two times, and both times, someone pulled the fire alarm mid-dance in "protest" of Islam. Unfortunatly as well, since the dance is actually a prayerful meditation, they are not able to just start back over again where they left off so I still haven't been able to see a dance all the way through. It's mesmerzing,
"Canım var oldukça ben, Kur'an'ın kulu (emrinde) kölesiyim. Ben Hz. Muhammed'in (s.a.v.) ayağının tozu toprağıyım.
The white clothes they wear is symbolizing the shroud -a kind of sheet that people get covered when they die and put into the coffin with it- and the hat is symbolizing the gravestone.
When I was a little girl, at all the Jewish weddings I went to, I would go out into the hallway when the music was playing and spin and spin and spin ;-)
the mevlevi whirling dervish always turns towards the heart or counter-clockwise but since the movement itself is called 'sema' or dance of the planets, and planets turn both ways, a dervish should be able do to the same, but mevlevi semazens keep left... the woman in the video is me, tanya evanson, and i am a rifa'i semazen so i turn both ways! blessings
I don't know much about your culture nor do I know much about derwishes. Could you please explain a some question? Why do they just spin? Is it something spiritual? Some sort of trance they get into? Some sort of "sacrifice" dance to their deity?
this moving meditation is based on the sema dance of the mevlevi dervishes of turkey. the spinning is a representation of everything that spins: the planets around the sun, Earth on its axis, the cells in the human body... the movement is an active version of sitting meditation. there is no sacrifice other than one's ego and there is no deity. blessings.
Is there a special reason why dervishes wear white clothes? And why the long robes? It's not just the spinning isn't it? Its a visual thing as well or not? Is there a meaning of the hat they wear?
All you say is true and helpful, but Sema means Listening (to the Heart, mediator of embodied Divinity) and therefore we Mevlevis keep on turning (left) into increasingly deeper circles toward the Center of the Heart, in communion with our Source.
selamlar, i am mira's twin dervish sister tanya, it is me in this video and it was my first solo performance with mercan dede in austria. thank you Wittkowsky for posting it and ashk olsun to all. tanya
It was amazing watching Mira Burke turn and hearing Mercan Dede's music. Their interpretation of connecting to the higher self within the format of the Sacred Dance of the Mevlevi was poignant and gentle; their freshness and creativity so illustrates the essentialist origins of this path; and the movement into darkness expresses perfectly the persecutions suffered through fundamentalism and orthodoxy of this great order of dervishes. I bow to the truth and beauty of your performance.

actually first they come in with the BLACK robe
robe which symbolizes the shroud. they then take it
off - revealing the white which stands for purity.
