  • OWNED. Really, this guys admits that he's attached to a bunch of superstition and falsehoods, but he tries to rationalize it endlessly. Hopeless, these religious people are

  • Red herring at 2:30

  • Boom and Pow.

  • Harris's analogy essentially does not correlate to what the man on the left stated.

  • What are you talking about? His delivery was respectful and quite funny. I suspect your interpretation may be motivated by another agenda; if so, then you may wish to examine your sense of analytical honesty.

  • @afklgb A bigot being "respectful'....Mmmm...that's interesting to say the least.

  • @uranatheisttwit Apparently, it was your ox that was gored by Harris.

  • Ben Stiller is so funny

  • Harris' appeal to logic trespasses on ontological ground; that is the realm of the divine -how we know what we know.

  • @mechamiles The ontological argument was philosophically rebutted centuries ago. It is impossible to trespass on "the realm of the divine" as it doesn't exist. There is no such realm. Harris, who has his doctorate in neuroscience is as fit as anyone to joke about theology and metaphysics.

  • @DoctorOfDisbelief Well if it has been rebutted then you certainly haven't demonstrated the proof. Simply saying that the world of the ontological doesn't exist obviously doesn't make it so. Moreover, I wouldn't be so quick to jump into someone's camp just because they have a degree. I have a Ph.D in mathematics, surely that doesn't make anything I say credible? We are trained to discern the logical cogency of an argument given an ordered construct, and I surmise that your comment is irrelevant.

  • The moment one asserts that reality includes intangible things that can not be perceived in any known manner; that those things absolutely exist simply because one believes in them (and even further, the knowledge of the very thoughts and desires of those intangible things)...

at that point you have left the door wide open for absolutely any nonsense to also be asserted with equal validity. That's irrational. It reduces the very core of your understanding of the universe to a mere hunch.

  • Comment removed

  • @rmcdaniel423 Exactly, by using the words "faith" and "belief" they are admitting they cannot prove that what they believe in actually exists. My confusion starts at that point , why do they believe in something that they themselves admit they cannot prove exists? and my answer to that question is, Ignorance, desperation and indoctrination.

  • @rmcdaniel423 beautiful, said perfectly...

  • @rmcdaniel423 You write as if a belief in God instantly constraints all rational beliefs concerning "higher level thinking," i.e the universe. God is not merely the "go to answer" for scientific gaps and an absence of tangible evidence. As Wolpe noted before the debate turned strictly comedic, many of God's appearances are through personal connections and relationships not fully explainable from an academic perspective. Denial is a metaphorical blind to encounters purely non-conecincidental.

  • Ben Stiller is so funny ^^

  • @FortuneInLies you're bad ; )

  • I LOVE how folks on these sites throw out the "Ad Hominem" phrase! It's hysterical! USUALLY, the one that throws it out there, is WRONG about their view on the topic. Have just been shown up, by the opposing debater and is attempting to turn solid intelligent reasoning on the part of their opponent, into an attack, based solely on the fact that someone didn't agree with their usually "crackpot" viewpoint. So they start crying" You ad hominemally" attacked me!! Oh yeah. And USUALLY.. their GAY!

  • I think Harris is at his comedic best when he pretends to be a philosopher.

  • I'll give the jewish guy credit for having a sense of humor and being able to take it but his beliefs are nothing more than the usual "I don't understand it, so god did it" and "I feel his presence" nonsense that you get from the average southern baptist bible thumper with a 6th grade education.

  • OH SNAP

  • owned.

  • The eyebrow is enough.

  • Gotta love how snippy the religious guy is...

  • He's gonna deliver on Joe Rogan's Podcast, March 8th!

  • @denstorelebowski Powerful denstorelebowski

  • @denstorelebowski Thank you so much for telling me :P Where can it be watched?

  • @Slipknot74261700027x On Joe Rogan's channel on USTREAM,

Follow Joe Rogan on twitter to know when.

  • I think Harris is at his comedic best when he tries to pretend to be a philosopher.

  • @yrusodumbwhy I think philosophers are next to useless, but certainly are useless when they attempt to support theology. One cannot make a myth true by developing a more sophisticated argument.

  • Who cares if we know or not why we are here. Just live your present and shut up.

  • @cineasta71 If you don't care, why did you bother to watch this and comment? You could have just moved on. Very classless of you to tell anyone who was here to "shut up." Do you try to bully the people in your world outside the safety of your computer? Or is this just online bravado?

  • @harlon57 it's a figure of speech. This is not directed to anyone. Try to be smart.

  • @cineasta71 Try not to be rude and we'll be good to go.

  • @harlon57 Ok youtube moral cop.

  • @cineasta71 I agree, you shouldn't be rude. It does nothing to further discourse, and makes you seem small-minded.

  • @DoctorOfDisbelief It makes me small minded? LOL. That's rude and arrogant. Can't you see that i am indeed laughing at you?

  • @cineasta71 Rude and arrogant, possibly, but it has the advantage of being true. In your case, you are just rude. And now, boring. No worse sin that to be boring.

  • @cineasta71 By the way, you don't "seem" to understand I wrote makes you "seem" small minded. I did not write "makes" you small minded. Significant difference, that was lost on you.

  • @DoctorOfDisbelief you crack me up. Cheer up man!

  • @cineasta71 If only I could say the same....and I am happy. Now, get off my lawn.

  • @DoctorOfDisbelief Ill get off your trailer for sure.

  • @cineasta71 Why does it not surprise me you live in an area with trailers?!?

  • For those who actually want to view both sides of the argument correctly, Ravi Zacharius and Dr. Ken Hamm.

  • @MrTopgearguy1 Ham's doctorate is "honorary." He started a group to push creationism. The Christian ministry specialises in young Earth creationism and promotes the belief that the initial chapters in Genesis should be taken as literally true and historically accurate.

Don't think I'm interested in hearing the views of a nut that believes the bible is literally true, and that the world is less than 10,000 years old.

No thanks. Would have to be an idiot to listen to Ken Ham.

  • @harlon57 In addition to his doctorate, Dr. Ham retains a degree in applied science with emphasis on environmental biology, as well as a degree in education. The problem with ilk like you, is that when you don't like something, you immediately start with the vitriolic diatribe and name calling. Liberals really are a small minded hypocritical group of people.

  • Why didn't he just say it is a supernatural claim.

  • @spareaxe you mean "insert magic here?"

  • m-m-m-m-monsterkill

  • It's funny the way religious people seem to think that scientific evidence and their experience can co-exist. No, there is only scientific evidence

  • @begood20000 Ultimately, yeah.

Even subjective experience could be broken down by a number of sciences if the subject lent itself to it.

  • arguing with religious people is like playing chess with a chicken, it doesn't matter what you do, the chicken will only rattle around the board knocking the pieces over

  • fucking destroyed

  • Wow, are these guys well rehearsed. Rolling thunder, not one word of it answering the question or legitimately addressing the opposing view.

  • @manthasagittarius1 A debate isn't so much a conversation, as it is a word fight in which one side is declared winner and the other loser.

  • "Religion is a path to God" - ewwww.

Sadly, religion is also a path to war, misery, torture, persecution and death as well as "a path to god". As God clearly doesn't exist, all that's left in the equation is the war, misery, torture, persecution and death.

I say let's give religion a rest and let God find a path to us for a change.

And let's not worry over it too much.

Either way, I'm certain he's not going to call.

    Ever.

  • @nurb101 Anyone can read examples of generations of wickedness... 10 generations where each time you say "well maybe this guy won't grow up to be a wicked piece of shit" and instead he grows up being murderer rapist thief liar etc. unrepentant sinner bottom line. If #11 generation gets wiped out in the womb I don't feel too bad sorry we had a bad seed there needed to be cleansed. If you gonna go down defending THOSE kinda chumps you will be in like company in hell right?

  • @drche420 That's a perfect example of the lamest of logical fallacies: the Genetic Fallacy.

    Lame dude. Really lame.

  • @MrUrsolamedude

I haven't committed the Genetic Fallacy. If you would look at a map of the world, highlighting areas of different religions according to population density, you will notice that geography overwhelmingly determines what religion you are. You would be denying a fact to come to any other conclusion.

  • @drche420 uhhh...yep you have.

now sit down in the corner and study more, nnn-kay?

  • @MrUrsolamedude

    That's your come-back? "Nuh-uh!". Nice, kid. Nice.

  • @drche420 Thank you dumbass...I thought so too.

Stick around and even a twit like you might learn something.

    Then again...maybe not.

Go play in the road son.

  • @MrUrsolamedude

Lol. No sense in trying to converse with a child. Have fun thinking you're right without any reasoning to back it up.

  • @drche420 As if you are "no-God's" gift to reason...lol.

But then, EVERY atheist is superbly reasonable! laugh my fat ass off!!

  • @MrUrsolamedude

This is rather funny. I have asked multiple times for your reasoning and you fail to provide it. It is painfully obvious that you lack understanding in the Genetic Fallacy. You're only embarrassing yourself.

  • @drche420 Douche420: "Blahblahblahblah...I'm smarter than you...blahblahblahblah...reason...blahblahblahblah....lame ad hominem

    ...blahblahblah....blahblahblah...blahblah.

    Twit.

  • @MrUrsolamedude

Please, continue. I stated exactly how the Genetic Fallacy only applies to appeals based on origin Without Context. It's painfully obvious that the geographical distribution of religions around the world is the context. Time and time again you refuse to acknowledge this. It is just sad how intellectually dishonest you have been.

  • @jake44514

Yes I believe I've spent way too much time getting trolled.

  • @jake44514 I found this comment far funnier than was intended due to the fact i was playing chess yesterday and a seagull (yeah, not quite a pigeon but still) actualy flew down and knocked the pieces over in its haste to steal my mates sandwich xD

  • AWESOME Sam Harris.

Yes, Elvis is alive. I believe it! But it's a metaphysical thing so i cannot really give you much details...just trust me...and have faith...hell yeah!

  • Ben stiller? is that you?

  • i'd imagine in a profession like his he has to perform like a very dry comedian, because people believing in religion is simply ridiculous. he would be weeping for mankind if he weren't laughing at it.

  • Bwaaahahaha! What a mensch Sam is.

  • "accident" they sure use that world a lot.

  • Even if a deity did create everything, that deity has little to not shit to do with its creation.

  • I watched the whole talk, and found it surprising that Rabbi Wolpe could mention the Jewish Holocaust, but completely ignore the far larger Meso-American Holocaust perpetrated by the Catholics/Christians.

  • @nurb101 Is Old Testament tribal law the easiest part of the Bible to wrap your head around? No... the easiest to explain to a non believer? No.. The message of repentance does transcend even the Bible. Repent of your iniquities against the true God of the universe and he will forgive you and welcome you into his perfect kingdom. Ultimately is wiping a wicked people, children and all, off the map a good thing? Yeah otherwise their kids would grow up and come get you...didnt u read the godfather

  • Lol... I wish logic would prevail...delusions of massive proportions when compared to elvis sightings...no proof...blind faith...silly people. :(

  • Nice one!

  • It was the brillant George H. Smith who said in his book, Atheism the case against god put it brillantly, "The mystic or religionists argument falls into the realm of agnostisim. He cant tell you where god is, who god is, or what he is based on evidence" Therefore he is really an agnostic in this sense".

  • I noticed that the Itialians are on the leading edge of religious thought. Not only is the Vatican there, but they are the epicenter of Spagetti as well.

  • Sam Harris 's counterpart was visibly shaken, although he tried to laugh. A great moment for the atheist movement. This video should be presented to the Republican presidential candidates. Let's hear their reaction.

  • In the spirit of Christopher Hitchens,

Sam Harris just treated religion "with all the scorn and ridicule it so richly deserves".

  • Hitchens really was one of the best on this subject. do yourself a favor if you havent and read George H Smith for a super Philsophical argument and deconstruction of the argument of God. If I could say this its even better than Hitchens or anyone else ive read on the subject for that matter. Hitchens is king though in regard to debates on the subject.

  • He nailed it.

  • Who'd have thought Steve Guttenberg was so smart...

  • So. Fucking. EPIC!

  • " Come in, sit down......Name?........Jones.......Age?....... 23...........Previous position?.........Retail Manager.......And do you believe Elvis is alive?.........sorry could you repeat that........Are you of the belief that Elvis still walks among us?........What is your opinion?........I firmly believe that the King, after undertaking extensive plastic surgery is still with us..........Do all your employees believe this?........Absolutely..........THEN I BELIEVE, I BELIEVE.

  • That was so freaking awesome!

  • Sam Harris' favorite word: discourse

  • Sam Harris is a far far less intelligent version of Dawkins. His responses there were far from perfect.

  • @Jackalest

Have you read his books? He's very thorough (well referenced and academically respected).

When he speaks in public he is also thorough but I think he is aware of the audience he's addressing and, as in this example, makes a point that they accept and understand while being entertained at the same time.

Dawkins is simply different in his presentation.

I have a feeling that Sam comes across as more down to Earth and easier for listeners to identify with. At least in America.

  • @Candyliz2003 Sam Harris' philosophical framework is sophomoric at best. He argues a pseudo-utilitarian/emotivist position at a normative level in order to answer meta-ethical questions, which cannot be done without self-defeating his own argument. There are a lot of stronger atheist and theist debaters than him (Hitchens was one). These guys with best-selling books and large PR teams behind them aren't necessarily the best intellectuals on these topics, but rather the most entertaining.

  • @Darkrider6970

Which of Sam's books have you read?

  • @Darkrider6970

Complaints against his best-selling status make you sound like one in a jealous crowd.

Saying his "philosophical framework is sophomoric" suggests you haven't read "End of Faith" (I did).

"He argues... at a normative level..." How? By being judgmental? You could apply that to any argument. Harris backs up his statements and theses with heavy referencing - which you'd know if you'd read his book.

Emotive? Who - on either side of the argument - doesn't have strong feelings about it?

  • I just asked @Darkrider6970 what I think to be more to the point. Rather than attack Harris, who is not here, tell us what Darkrider would have said in response to the rabbi. Enlighten us.

  • @Darkrider6970

Maybe there are better debaters - I was simply saying that Sam's answer here was made to fit those hearing it.

You can have the best argument in the world but if it is complicated or jargonized it can be lost on those it's intended for. Not saying that's the case w/ Richard just that they have differing styles.

  • @Darkrider6970 Rather than disparaging a man who is not here to respond, why don't you tell us how you would have argued the point in question. That may be enlightening.

  • Yet again Sam Harris shows a true voice of reason and clear rational thought.

  • hahaha fuck that was awesome

  • this is one of my favorite moments of Sam Harris. He starts so quiet, so reserved, and lets his opponent think that he has given up, but in truth is waiting for that rightous moment when the believer feels secure enough to REALLY say what he wants to...then slamps the door on his idea, and drags his opponent over the stage. Beautiful!

  • "I see you might be Elvis" haha xD

  • Jesus is real and he loves everyone...

    But:

    8====\\O//

    is sin.

  • "my understanding of the design of the world..."

    ... is non existent.

  • Well said/done Sam. ★★★★★

    Katalyzt

  • Jews seem to do these sorts of debates with so much more good humour than christians v atheists.

  • @MrRationalgaze Yeah, but it seems more jews are secular, but most christians are uneducated and actually are little theocratic fascists, but there are some orthodox jews who are as loons as fanatic muslims.

  • @MrRationalgaze They have had more practice. And are used to using humour to avoid death!

  • @MrRationalgaze Jews invented comedy. You have to have a sense of humor to be a Jew.

  • @MrRationalgaze Your'e right, I think it's the ingrained self deprecating nature of Yiddish humour.

  • @MrRationalgaze then your ignorant ass haven't seen richard dawkings, ricky gervais etc ^^

  • @mQtek My ignorant ass? Excuse me? Number one, the word is 'hasn't'. Number two his name is Richard Dawkins. Number three, when DawKINS debates a theist, the debate is usually filled with an undercurrent of mutual disrespect and sarcasm. Number four, Gervais his never 'debated' on this matter. Number five, fuck yourself you ignorant cocksucker.

  • @MrRationalgaze Thank you for correcting me, I always seem to type it with a G, although I am well aware it's without one. I would like to tell you that you hurt my emotions, you saying fuck yourself you ignorant cocksucker really made me, sad for a second. I hope you have a nice day, and don't forget to wear a condom when humping that cute mother of yours!

  • @mQtek Apology accepted, asshole.

  • @MrRationalgaze I don't think you understand the sarcasm, I guess you validated what I already were pretty sure of, ignorant and stupid.

  • @mQtek Again, thanks for admitting that everything you have said is wrong.

  • @MrRationalgaze You're a moron, I'll just leave it at that. Cocksucking idiot.

  • @mQtek Crybaby.

  • @mQtek Not a single rebuttal to my reasons on why you are wrong? You have the intellect of a crane fly.

  • @MrRationalgaze Haha, pathetic.

  • @mQtek Still no rebuttal. I love it when you lick my balls. I see you also block your page. Not only are you big mouth, you are also a coward.

  • @MrRationalgaze Pathetic.

  • @MrRationalgaze bc the jews study their religion, christians just believe what theyre told.

  • @MrRationalgaze hence why there are so many jewish comedians. they have a better sense of humour regarding everything.

  • @MrRationalgaze

Jews in general have obtained this humorous outlook on many different things. They've had to wait and continue to wait for a messiah that's not coming. They've had to continue old, outdated traditions in midst of other religions rising. Their old testament god is a prick. It's only natural that you have to create some sense of humor out of having to explain yahweh's general dickishness for the past 3000 years.

  • @MrRationalgaze i agree. much more open minded and civil.

  • @MrRationalgaze I agree except I would qualify that with American Jews, it seems like the Israelis aren't making anyone laugh...

  • Sam Harris is mistaken, by the Mojo Nixon school of thought: Elvis is everywhere. Except for Micheal J Fox who has no Elvis.

  • Sam Harris sucks dick

  • @BronyEditor Yours?

  • @MrSejanus27 Hitchens.

  • @BronyEditor Hitchens is dead. Must be yours.

  • @BronyEditor He might, but at least he has a brain

  • He's one of my new heroes

  • Sam Harris on his blog: When some biological components (nonconscious matter) come togheter, hopla, consciousness! It`s so dumb, then all living things would have the same composition, for instance, because all living things, experience fear. It gets difficult to claim a process of evolution on that. It`s just all incoherent talk from atheists.

  • Sam Harris has a nervous disposition. Which makes me wonder why is he on some crusade against religion, or, is it all forms of spirituality? Why be such a wet blanket? The only answer I can think of is he doesn't want any kind of accountability for his actions in life. If there is a "GOD" then that concept implies accountability. Maybe he enjoys lust, infidelity, slander, jealousy, hate, etc. Maybe he just likes to masturbate his intellect. Stroking his ego to ease his guilty conscience.

  • Sam actually has a very strong value for morale beliefs. He actually did a ted talk on how science has deployed many strong and positive moral views out of the respect for others.

  • If this is the only answer you can think of, I'm sad to say that you, like many religious people, fail to recognize the hatred and cruel language you use... Is this what Jesus would you want to say? :)

  • Actually that comeback was very feeble and all I can hear is a lot of word play. I like giving both sides a fair hearing but I find Sam Harris contempt even prejudice. Disrespecting the other man by not letting him finish his thoughts. Atheism is a new religion not necessarily brand new but becoming more and more popular. It is a religion by definition. (The definition is a set of beliefs being accepted/practiced among a number of persons.) Atheist believe in their unbelief.

  • @somthincrazyhappenin I'm not an atheist but you are wrong. It is not at all a religion. Atheism is a rejection of belief...a lack of belief. You can't believe in a belief that isn't there....that makes no sense at all.

  • @somthincrazyhappenin "Atheism is a religion". That's just wrong. It's like saying someone who dosn't collect stamps has a hobby.

  • What a brilliant comeback!

  • god is the best joke

  • Sam Harris and all blind guide atheists like him argue that they are clever, intelligent and enlightened because they think they are among the first people in human history look around, and think "HMMM Maybe God's not God, maybe I am God". This is not a new idea folks. The Atheist who swears to the belief that there is no god, makes himself god. And what is the exact crime the devil himself was cast from heaven for? Trying to make himself God. Atheists are old news folks, only the LORD is God.

  • @Commenter11211 Christians are often just as domineering and arrogant as atheists.

  • @Pythagoras211 In other words, they set themselves up as 'God'.

  • @Pythagoras211 The night before Jesus was murdered, his final act towards his disciples was to wash their feet, and He instructed them to (symbolically) do likewise. an act that is altogether not "domineering and arrogant" I'm sorry that religious zeal is sometimes misguided. All messengers of God have had a variety of the same message: Repent and rely on the LORD alone for salvation. The death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth gives us the opportunity to know God, the maker of all.

  • @Commenter11211 shut up, slut.

  • @sunzoo1 Very enlightened reply.
