i am a fourth lakota sioux - my mom is half, she was adopted out of her biological family when she was 6 weeks old in 1961 and has never met her birth family and knows nothing of the culture, therefore me and my brother do not as well. i am thankful u are able to upload these songs - it is a part of my heritage i wasn't lucky to grow up around but i have/will always have a yearning to learn more about it. there is nothing like the sound of native song and native drums <3 Native pride!!
respect to four clans four directions and respect for the east and the sunshine and west for the sunset colors one people one earth united we will be because its in the prophecy, respect for th elders.
I am so grateful that you are sharing these songs. So many of us out here are searching and looking to the Teachings of the 1st Nations for guidance. I am again, so grateful. Thank you from my heart.
The way I was taught was the 4 Direction Colors are the 4 Colors of man and we were sent to learn different things but to come back together to become one people again To do that we must learn from each other. Aho Mitauke Oyasin!
I was raised around sundance. At first i was a tree girl. Then i moved on to a dancer. I am a chanupa carrier and only 13. I am proud of the path that i chose for my life and i hope that someday my children will do the same. I love hearing the sundance songs because they remind me of dancing and being home for the four days that i can.
Wopila. It is wonderful to hear these songs. I close my eyes and anticipate this year's upcoming dance. Many years of sundance are brought back to life....
oh gosh that went right through my body and into my spirit it felt so good the Lakota words and voice well best song ever to me it was more than a song, thank you wopile RedBuffalo82 my Native brother for sending me this song. its good to hear the old voice of long ago
thanks for all the positive comments, although some say that i should take these songs off, and that they should not be placed out for the world to know, i dont see it that way, those that are drawn to this way of life will seek it, atleast here it is free, and not like others who sell our songs and culture, thank you
@cetanluzahan1972 i think the people that were meant to learn this should go find it for themselves. some people may be using these ceremony songs in a wrong way. it may be spiritually dangerous to allow that.
Thankyou, for signing this song, I have been honored to attend a few Sundances, first as a observer, then as a supporter for my Brother. Thank yoy again for this.
@cetanluzahan1972 I'd like to play this for my students. Are you comfortable providing a name so I can say who sang it? If not a real name, then just a moniker. Thank you very much for uploading this!
cetanluzahan1972 thanks so much! Now I remember reading of warriors in the old times would shout: "hoka he! It is a good day to die"! before going into battle...it's a beautiful language...I wish there was a way to learn it here in Santa Barbara, Calif. And I guess that Tunkasila and Wakan Tanka are the same terms, or I should say two terms for the same thing? Thanks again!
So Tunkasila is Grandfather in English? I thought Wakan Tanka, in addition to meaning Great Spirit, also meant Grandfather...and what does "hoka he" mean? Thanks for this beautiful postingt.
yea, hoka he means we are ready, are you ready, depending on the context, when a leader shouts it like in terms of a sundance it is then we are ready, usually just the term hoka means ready the "he" is a addictive to make it a question, Hoka he? are you ready, he is also a term a woman uses to ask a question the male usually uses hwo hoka hwo
