This game like an arcade adaption of Streets of Rage, also from Sega (Genesis). Except, this doesn't look nearly as fun. I think they were released around the same time. Anyone know which one was first?
when I was growing up at the arcades, I always thought it was so bad ass how the enemies are sitting down and jump up when you come busting on the scene. still fucking awesome...
@Soukyugurentai However, I hear most people prefer multi-player. Riot Zone isn't a sequel to Riot City, it's just another game, much like comparing Wonder Boy to Adventure Island.
so the cool one does a really mean "raising tackle" and the other one who's doing the MC Hammer while he's constipated does a breakdance?!!! why can't a lead role go to a dark skin guy with the cool moves and stance a blonde hero register? lol. seems racist to me when it came to 90's "beat'em up" genre's if this is hard for game developers to do, the only thing to do is to create a blonde character with great move list, stance (and don't forget the super moves) and darken the skin tone lol
Most of the enemies look better than the players. The chest-to-leg ratio on the players make them look like lollipops. Also, they should have given them a couple more pixels worth of neck.
For those of you who don't understand why Bobby walks unusual, compare that to his super attack at 0:32. He's based on African-American break dancers.
While WestOne took Sega's Wonder Boy and remade it as Adventure Island for Hudson Soft, they also took Riot City and remade it as Riot Zone (known in Japan as Crest of Wolf).
Actually, it's Westone, the same people who later made the similar Riot Zone for the TurboGrafx-CD. They also made Wonder Boy and Hudson's Adventure Island.
Sega only published it. WestOne, the company behind Wonder Boy and Adventure Island, developed this. They also took some parts of it and recreated it as Riot Zone for Hudson Soft.
Bobby, the black guy in the game, is a break dancer, and is "b-boying", he is walking to the beat of music. It's a style of walk-dancing in away I guess, but on a 2D sprite it just looks funky, I guess it'd look funny in 3D too unless it was motion captured.

The black guy must have an appointment to audition for the Rockettes after fighting.
His walk is just about the only thing worth remarking. Truely unremarkable game like you say.
thetylife 2 years ago
He must of been inspired by MC Hammer and other similar singers, dancers and groups popular during the time of the arcade game's release.

arrogancy 2 years ago
The "Dishonorable Punch" is a "Rising Tackle" in disguise !!!!! XD
For some reason, I find this a cool idea to put such a move in a Beat 'em Up Game instead of a 1on1 Fighting Game...
But, well, working well on ideas is what matters... :p
