Three cheers for the greatest steam engine in history! Hip hip, horray! Hip hip, horray! Hip hip, horray! Long live 4472 for the greatest steam engine on earth.
I have a very vague memory of Flying Scotsman at Llangollen. She was there the year before this footage was shot (around Easter 1993 I think), and was still in LNER Apple Green. Sadly she was out of action at the time, but I managed to get on her footplate when she was on display in the yard. I managed to see 4472 ten years later at Doncaster Plant 150, and also saw her in 2004 and 2005, in places like York and even Crewe! Looking forward to seeing 4472 steam again once more. Thumbs up for this!
I think I was there that day, I was 6. You know when images just stick in your mind, well there is a few in that video that reminds me of that, the day itself, the double header with those two loco's with flying scotsman in front. Plus I remember going on the footplate of the flying scotsman and seeing a huge roaring fire.
@falcons1988 - same here on all counts. The thing I remember most was looking up at the driving wheels and seeing the nameplate, as a cloud of steam enveloped me and she backed away. Magical.
@falcons1988 personally i quite like it in BR green - i know it will upset the purists but it was that colour for quite a while, as i like the 60's hope it gets back into steam soon - and tornado as well (new livery BR Brunswick Green) great video
I was on about the music. But yes I like flying scotsman in BR Brunswick Green, what would be nice is for FS and Tornado to come out of the NRM together after overhaul in BR Brunswick Green
What was the music at the start? I remember seeing a flying scotsman video when I was very young with that music and been trying to find what it wat. Nostalgic tune :D
@ragerancher - Henry Purcell's trumpet tune in D. It's a very nostalgic tune for me as well, having watched the same video. Strange coincidence (and I wasn't about to experience it) but my parents went down the aisle to this tune too!
Thank you for the wonderful video, it brought back many memories for me. My parents took me to San Francisco in the early 1970's, to see The Flying Scotsman, when she was in the US on tour. I'll never forget seeing her here in SF!
I always did like the A3s in this livery. Don't know why, just makes them look more powerful and impressive somehow. Specially with the smoke deflectors.
I guess I became interested in steam again when I saw a steam engine on the Brisbane railway, when I was under the belief there were only electric or diesel engines in Brisbane. I had been on a steam train just outside of Brisbane when I was little.
What a grand engine to be introduced to steam with! I first became interested in steam trains with Thomas the Tank engine. My parents tell me that the first steam engine in real life I saw was at the Sydney museum, and I was amazed. If I'm not mistaking, the first steam train I was on was the narrow gauge train "Puffing Billy" near Melbourne.
its a pity that The Flying Scotsman is at york in bits haveing a full re build and its takeing a bit longer than planned i saw it there 6 months ago and i was saddend to see it in that state i was told thay had to replace the boiler and one couod not b found for it i hope thay do some time soon
I would like to take this oppertunity to correct you on several points of your comment;
1. There are NOT two Fling Scotsmans (notice the lack of apostrophe) 4472 was the LNER number before nationalisation and 60163 was the British Railways number after nationalisation.
2. Please spell BRITISH correctly.
3. Railway is always one word.
4. In your incorect context you signify that their are two locomotives but yet you you is, implying that there is only one.
Jaws - you are wrong. The designs ARE different in details, but they are one and the same engine. I know - I've seen said engine with my own eyes. I'm a member of her covenators club (4472 Express Club) and know her history inside and out.
This is Flying Scotsman as she was owned by British Railways. When she was owned by the LNER she did not have the deflectors, double chimney or larger boiler.
sorry to tell you that you have made 2 mistakes in your context aswell, You have stated that Flying Scotsmans B.R number was 60163!!!!! Thats Tornados number!!!! Also you have spelt the word Flying wrong, you wrote... Fling.
Firstly, those are the TAGS, and I have deliberately put 60163 as well as 60103. Secondly - and I am viewing it now - unedited since i first uploaded the video - it clearly reads "Flying Scotsman" in both description and tags.
it may be Great Western (which I love but you seem more set on the LNER) but the 6880 gala (steel, steam and star II) was fantastic with 10 locos including Mayflower (B1) and Royal Scot
Seems there's a lot of confusion here about this loco. Yes, it is the original Flying Scotsman. Although she looks very different compared to her 4472 L.N.E.R. look it's the same loco. Dare I say I prefer the B.R. version. Great clip !
I know I did. I'm just trying to find out if it really is the Flying Scotsman or not. If anyone knows anything about this a reply would be greatly appreciated.
I've never heard such rubbish on one of my videos. That locomotive is indeed the Flying Scotsman. When rebuilt to A3 standards in the 1950s, she was repainted several times and renumbered when her ownership passed from LNER to British Railways. She was painted Apple Green for several periods up to 1949, when she was painted blue, and then painted Brunswick green (as seen here) in 1952.
Further - when taken into private ownership through preservation, she was indeed painted apple green for a long period, but in the 1990s she was rebuilt to pseudo A3 (single chimney became a double chimney, smoke deflectors added) and repainted into her British Railways Brunswick Green for a short period.
This IS the real Flying Scotsman, just in one of the many liveries that she wore throughout her working life on British Railways.
Ok thanks for clear up. I apologise I what I said offended you or anyone else. When I saw the number I just thought to myself for a second that there was no way it could be the Scotsman. The last time I saw it the engine was still wearing the number 4472. BTW Is it still wearing the number it had when this video was filmed or has it been renumbered back to 4472 since this happened?
I suppose we could have some real fun and add the numbers 1472,103 and 502 into the mix. Amazing things..books...i suggest that several of you lot should read some.
What saddens me is the huge amount of material out there on this one locomotive - and no one seems to have read up on it at all, much less looked beyond the plastic hornby models to the real thing and its history.
Wait a minute! That is not the Flying Scotsman. I know the Flying Scotsman whell enough to recognise the Scotsman when I see it and that is not the Scotsman. First of all, the Scotsman's number is 4472, not 60163. Plus the Flying Scotsman does not have elephant ear's. If no one here know's what elephant ear's are that is what smoke deflector's were known as by american Railroader's and railfan's. So what happened to it?
This is brilliant footage, Simon. When I was younger, I'd only seen footage of steam engines on videos about railways until 2003 when I went to a scenic railroad with working steam engines and had my first experience of steam.

nah - nero capturing software. Basically played the camcorder through the laptop, saved it as an mpeg file and then edited it in Microsoft movie maker. It's about 15/16 years ago now...
Actually here, FS is an "A3 pacific". All of the A1s were indeed scrapped, but it depends upon whether you mean "Peppercorn A1" or "Gresley A1, rebuilt to spec A3".
Is there anything left of the Thompson A1, i only ask because there was a featurette that parts for 4472's overhaul came off long since gone pacifics. Eg, one of the cylinders cameof A3 "Salmon Trout."
I like the Scotsman with just the single chimney better. Any idea why the double chimney was put on?

me and my buddy talk alot about going to britain for just that reason
though I do have to admit, your whistles are very high pitched for our tastes, we still find it wonderful how well they are kept
here in the U.S.A. so many steam locomotives arent kept to the best degree
but we do love them, I have noticed that your trains have more of an ellegant look, where we went for more of a powerful,"get out of my way" look
