oh my God, the same thing happened to me a few years ago. I was still like 6 and I wanted to go trick or treating as Patrick Star from Spongebob. Since I couldn't find a costume, my mom made me one out of sheets and died it pink. Of course, it didn't look pink at night which was really bad in a predominantly black neighborhood.

I had a similar awkward moment at a Halloween party my wife and I hosted this year. I dressed as Robert Downey, Jr.'s character from Tropic Thunder. When I answered the door around 9pm, one of my wife's friends I hadn't yet met, who is black, was standing on our front doorstep. Instead of saying the "I'm a lead farmer, motherfucker!" line I'd previously used to greet my guests, I quickly dropped character and explained who I was supposed to be in my own white-boy voice. He laughed anyway. Whew!

My friend had a nicely framed, KKK official clan membership card, badge, and informational brochure from the 1940's that her grandma applied for and received. She was a card carrying member, just as her way of saying F### You to the clan.
