Doesn't surprise me, because hamsters are tiny animals, actually. They're tinier than they look. Their fur makes them look plumper than their actual body mass. So the wires of the cage need to be no more than 1/2 inch apart.

Poor thing! I sure hope you got a more appropriate cage for him! Why would you just stand there taping him while he is obviously stuck and needs help??? Hamsters can break their legs and back very easily! He should not be allowed to jump from and walk anywhere he could fall, even only 12 inches down. They are not like mice and gerbils which are good jumpers. Get a 20 gallon LONG fish tank with a screen cover (and weigh it down with a heavy book) Much cheaper and safer than a cage.
