As a Huron grad ('76) I'm quite pleased with the new logo - although I think 'UWO' (University of Western Ontario) is much more accurate than 'Western'... our global contacts might assume it's out in Alberta! Fine to just say 'Western' in Canada, but there's a big world out there full of overseas students like me.
Northwestern University isn't really northwest of much, yet it's a top US university and its brand transcends the meaning of its name.
It's also noteworthy that Princeton was once called 'College of New Jersey'. Princeton is the stronger brand that history shows has served that university better: it is not inherently restricted by a specific-sounding region in its name.
There's nothing stopping alumni from keeping The University of Western Ontario on their resumes. It's still the legal name!
The ‘The University of Western Ontario’ name will still serve those who wish to use it. There’s no reason why we can’t keep using it. We don’t even have to say anything other than ‘Western’ in Canada anyways! The simplified name is clearly for the worldwide audience.

I think it is a mistake to get rid of the classic UC Tower logo, as that is hands down the most distinctive landmark on campus. I doubt that hiring a consulting company to design an Ivy League facade will make UWO any better. Western has always had a good image, but in order to improve itself, it should start with tougher academic standards. UWO needs to stop inflating grades and admitting spoiled brat Hunter boot and Canada Goose jacket wearing bimbos. Or we could just pretend to be Yale!

I Like it! Besides - Now Western ACTUALLY DOES make sense! After all, Western in relation to the globe IS IN FACT Western... Western in relation to Ontario or even Canada always seemed confusing to me. (I have a geography degree from here and the irony was obvious to my American family members)
Also, any intelligent person understands that the name is no longer just symbolic of location, but that it is in fact the word Western itself that is symbolic of the degree of establishment in the world of academia. If someone doesn't get it, well why would you want them at your school anyway?

Just to let everyone know it's legal name is still University of Western Ontario, and they have no plans to change that. Although since "Western" is what it is most referred as, they will be using it, instead of University of Western Ontario.

This is appalling!!! Not only does the name Western University suggest that the university is 'out west' but the logo also bears the rising sun just like the BC flag to further confuse! Furthermore, the name is very generic & ordinary - not memorable at all, esp. to those outside Canada! "Western" could refer to anything & the name itself has no character. Sounds "cheap" and the complete opposite of anything that would be prestigious. How many reputable universities have such a generic name?

For the nth time, the name of the school is still University of Western Ontario. Western/Western University is just a moniker. For instance, Berkley/UC Berkley for University of California Berkley.

I work in marketing and the money that was spent goes beyond the logo. There were obviously people involved that knew what they were doing. Great job!!!
They spent $200,000 to determine that people who WENT to Western and therefore know what it is...call it Western. I understand the desire to push your "brand"/school to the rest of the world (apparently by shortening the name...like Harvard...or Madonna), but maybe if they want to appeal to students worldwide they should work on their overall rating as a school in a world scale, which has fallen in recent years. Concentrate on academics first and your ability to look like an Apple ad second.

I am very busy with my graduation stuff but I believe if a major thing like this is going on, the adv. should be somehow that even the people who are busy with their study could hear about this somewhere. Real universities don't change names as a gimmick to attract a "international" students. It joins the illustrious company of Ryerson and York. Not even Queen's has changed its name and we all know they f*k sheep!
This looks too desperate. Why? Two world class universities, UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) and USC (University of Southern California) don't have to call themselves "Los Angeles" and "Southern"; they have the self-assurance and confidence in their identity to not stoop down to superficial marketing gimmicks.
Excellent work! I initially feared the change that a rebranding could impart upon my cherished Western but I love the new design and reformated moniker. I wrote a blog piece that expands on our natual inclination to fear change; the loss of what once meant so much to us sometimes preventing us from looking to the future. Take a look if you have the time. With a little time and perspective I think the Western community will come to truly embrace this next step in our evolution.

People need to learn how to embrace change and move forward, not reject it. Think of every time Facebook has changed and how much negative reaction it received. Now try and think of what that change was. You can't remember, because it was for the better. You'll get used to Western University and you'll forget it was even called UWO...maybe because you killed all your brain cells doing Jager Bombs or falling off stages at Jim Bobs, or maybe because you'll find it's for the better.

@Sungtaek as mentioned in the media, the official name is still going to remain The University of Western Ontario, how we refer to ourselves will change. ie: Cambridge (UK)Their official name is "The University of Cambridge" but they refer to themselves as "Cambridge University" or just "Cambridge". From a global perspective, this change makes sense.
They changed the name to increase the international appeal rather than being known as a regional university in Ontario. Not very fond of "Western University" but Waterloo took the UW acronym. The re branding process could have been better.

For the nth time, the name of the school is still University of Western Ontario. Western/Western University is just a moniker. For instance, Berkley/UC Berkley for University of California Berkley.
Nobody is changing the name of your school. Stop crying already. Jeez.

@NotNobody21 The credit was at the end to show that this was done internally at no extra cost. Would who prefer even more money being spend externally on a advertising agency to produce this? I work in marketing and the money that was spent goes beyond the logo. There were obviously people involved that knew what they were doing. Great job!!!

They spent $200,000 to determine that people who WENT to Western and therefore know what it is...call it Western. I understand the desire to push your "brand"/school to the rest of the world (apparently by shortening the name...like Harvard...or Madonna), but maybe if they want to appeal to students worldwide they should work on their overall rating as a school in a world scale, which has fallen in recent years. Concentrate on academics first and your ability to look like an Apple ad second.

I am very busy with my graduation stuff but I believe if a major thing like this is going on, the adv. should be somehow that even the people who are busy with their study could hear about this somewhere. I am busy now too but I heard about this as you see, whereas it could have happened before as well if the adv. policy was alright. Please understand the importance of this change...

Two world class universities, UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) and USC (University of Southern California) don't have to call themselves "Los Angeles" and "Southern"; they have the self-assurance and confidence in their identity to not stoop down to superficial marketing gimmicks.

Excellent work! I initially feared the change that a rebranding could impart upon my cherished Western but I love the new design and reformated moniker. I wrote a blog piece that expands on our natual inclination to fear change; the loss of what once meant so much to us sometimes preventing us from looking to the future. Take a look if you have the time. With a little time and perspective I think the Western community will come to truly embrace this next step in our evolution.

Total bullocks. I live in BC, and anytime I mention that "I went to Western" I have to clarify that statement by stating the full name of the university, followed by it's geographic location. Maybe everyone in Ontario knows what Western is, but not outside of it.

People need to learn how to embrace change and move forward, not reject it. Think of every time Facebook has changed and how much negative reaction it received. Now try and think of what that change was. You can't remember, because it was for the better. You'll get used to Western University and you'll forget it was even called UWO...maybe because you killed all your brain cells doing Jager Bombs or falling off stages at Jim Bobs, or maybe because you'll find it's for the better.

@Sungtaek as mentioned in the media, the official name is still going to remain The University of Western Ontario, how we refer to ourselves will change. ie: Cambridge (UK)Their official name is "The University of Cambridge" but they refer to themselves as "Cambridge University" or just "Cambridge". From a global perspective, this change makes sense.

They changed the name to increase the international appeal rather than being known as a regional university in Ontario. Not very fond of "Western University" but Waterloo took the UW acronym. The re branding process could have been better.

That's like saying Canadians can't voice their opinions on the politics of other countries. If you knew me, you'd know that I'm a pretty outspoken person, so I'm pretty secure with myself. As for the integrity of Queen's, most people see it as a world class institution, but you're entitled to your unfounded opinion.
