This was never clear to me. She obviously knew he opened another account because she knew he had "pissed away" $500 when she confronted Joe. But perhaps she was only told about the account and used the information to confront Joe. I am not convinced she got the money back and actually buried it in the yard. Either way, when Joe died, the money would go to her anyway.
@crowleysridgegirl She told Delores that her money was "all tied up in cash".. that was your answer. Vera was filthy rich.. you kow she gave Delores whatever she needed to get out of that marriage.
@hopemccoy I always took her saying that as a way of saying "Yes I'm rich, but don't ask me for money." At the beginning of Dolores' break down she complains about how Joe stole her money. Vera may have thought Dolores was looking for a hand out...it wasn't until later in the conversation she realized that wasn't the case at all.
@HunterWrangler Perhaps it's all in how one interprets that relationship. I believe Vera had suspicions that Delores dealt with a piece of crap husband.. all Vera needed was the opportunity to actually help Delores, when she knew Delores could trust her. Vera was bitter, but very passionate. She needed Delores as much as Delores needed her.
Vera was NOT 'cold.' it looks as though she has tears in her eyes @ 2:06, 2:25 and 3:00. one issue for me is continuity. Vera puts on her glasses to do her needlepoint (whatever) and she doesn't. it doesn't seem like she 'took them off' but she may have. anywho, this film totally rocks!!
@aluddite1 Everything about this scene is brilliant.. I get goosebumps watching it. Vera knows Delores is a tough bitch too. Upon Delores having a meltdown, Vera insists Delores call her by her "christian name", which was a sign that she wants Delores to trust her with anything. Vera does have tears while telling about how husbands die... then a tear falls as she looks down at her needlepoint at the very end of that scene.
This was one of the best books i have ever read! Only Stephen King can create such a masterpiece. I deffinitly agree on recomending both the movie and booms to all who has not heard of it. Thanks for posting this video.
What is so awesome about Parfitt's portrayal of Vera Donovan, is her remarkable ability to toss her own very British accent and effectively use the accent of a high-bourne American. It's even more fascinating than watching a Brit do a regional American acccent such as was done by Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind. It's an amazing feat -- and she seems to do it so effortlessly.
As usual, another fantastic british actor steals the scene! Maybe its just me, but always seems like the greatest actors that I have ever seen come out of Australia (Geoffrey Rush) and or the British Isles (Anthony Hopkins, Jeremy Irons, Judy Parfitt, Margaret Lockwood, Albert Finney, Helena Bonham Carter, Peter O'Toole, John Hurt, Alec Guiness) I mean the list just goes on and on!
Great movie & best part! I'm a man and I always thought that "Vera" was a classy beautiful older lady...even if she would've had *me* knocked off *grin*. I've watched this movie over 20 times.
wow...this is the best 5 minute synopsis of a movie I ever saw! It tells everything. Well, now I have to read the book after reading others' comments, but awesome!
I love this movie!!!! No Hunky in the movie for Vera though!:-( For anyone that has not read the book, I won't ruin it for you, but DO read it!! It also explains WHY Vera had two extra eclipse viewers and 2 reflector boxes!! Happy reads, I read it in 2 days, it was that good!!:)
It's a crime that Parfitt wasn't even nominated for any major awards for this; it's one of the great movie-bitch performers of all time, and it's so clear she read the book from cover to cover because she's perfect. You can imagine her perfectly doing all the stunts of Vera from the book.
@einekleineblonde Judy Parfitt is beyond fabulous in this scene. It's pure brillance. The fullest expression of what great acting is. You should also check out Glenn Close in the remake of "The Lion in Winter." BUTTAH!
it's one of my favourities..i've got it on dvd...please does somebody know what's the title of the bossa nova music played?i've been looking for it for long time but end up with nothing...thanks
Remember, eclipse at 5! Why they did not get academy awards I will never know. They weren't just acting. The climbed into the skin of those characters and never let go.
i thought the tag line for stephen kings books ''one from the master of horror'' ment just a tagline, until i read this book and thought, BEST AUTHOR EVER!!!!
Best part when Vera tells Dolores that sometimes a woman has to be a high riding bitch Love it. And she is so freakin dead serious. That's an excellent actress
...Sometimes doing the fink is the only thing that remains of a woman...
By Stephen King a feminist movie, very well done in comparison between mother & daughter. Great scan a dramatic two level time (past and present) that are interwoven on different shades of colors, important revelations for giving life to the story, beautiful setting in Maine, powerful and fat K. Bates. The best movie of a director impersonal.
Stephen King is my favorite author and this is my fave book as his.
I just love all the cool, creepy, subtle stuff in it. It's all believable, which makes it so much better. This is my favorite scene in the movie, too. ^_^
I love the movie! since i watched it for the very first time..it's one of my all time favorite movies! love the actresses, love their acting love the story..
"Sometimes you have to be a high riding bitch to survive". HA, I love it!! This is exactly the clip I wanted to see. It pretty much sums up the way I feel right now!
I really like Vera in this scene....excellent! I love how she says an accident can be an unhappy woman's best friend! She certainly have Dolores the idea of what to do about Joe! haha!
Thanks for posting this. This is one of 3 of my favorite scenes in the movie. I love the line Vera says "Eclipse at 5! (aka "He dies at 5)" Such an excellent movie!
Brilliant, flawless and artistic. The directing, acting, editing, cinematography -- all of it -- are so great that you become convinced the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences was asleep at the wheel when they overlooked this one. Then again, I think three quarters of their job is to overlook the good ones in order to over-promote the popular ones.
Yes it is a good performance by Kathy Bates.. but NO ONE unless they come from Maine should attempt the accent. Even as talented as she is it's a let down and a give-away that she's not really Dolores Claiborne.
Judy Parfitt however masters her American accent beautifully. It's even verging on "Connecticut lockjaw".
Ah, the feminie mystique. Truly, these are words to live by.
One of the very few worthwhile movie adaptations, with strong acting. The Oscar committee wouldn't know good acting if it effed them in the eye. Fortunately, one's own opinion is all that matters.
"Sometimes they're driving home from their mistress's apartment..." (voice drops an octave) "... and their brakes fail." These scenes are pitch-perfect. The whole movie grabs you and won't let go. Even the smaller roles are perfectly acted. On youtube you can't see the one teardrop that falls from Vera's eye during that speech. Kathy Bates and Jennifer J. Leigh should have both gotten Oscar noms for this one, IMHO.
Sorry.....I developed a sexual fetish for Kathy Bates after seeing her in Misery.....I ALWAYS DUG BIGGER WOMEN....NOT FAT....BUT BIG LUCIOUS BEAUTIES LIKE THE SEXY KATHY BATES.......
I love these clips! I saw the movie and just had to read the book. I'm about half way done right now. The movie I think did a good job at keep a lot of the good lines in ("Husbands die everyday Dolores") while shortening it up for the time line of the movie. In the book that quote goes on for half a page, and here's its only a few sentences. But it's an amazing book and movie! Thanks for the clips!
" I saw them in New York. I just had to have them." Thankyou very much fro uploading this. I came to you tube today hoping to find it. Youd did a wonderful job editing and putting it together. Bravo, it was great to see again.
This is unquestionably some of the best acting I have ever seen. An incredibly dark and powerful movie. Kathy Bates is incredible as is Judy Parfitt (Vera).

I don't understand why this movie did not get the recognition it deserves. I saw nothing but brilliant acting in this movie. One of my favorites.

This is unquestionably some of the best acting I have ever seen. An incredibly dark and powerful movie. Kathy Bates is incredible as is Judy Parfitt (Vera).
