  • Dopamine!

  • My character in our Burning Wheel Game swore to protect the king. The king gets turned into a lich and after much exploring our party finds him. My character turns on the party to defend the (lich) King and really lays the hurt on the entire party. It shocked my GM and the group. That's where it ended. This literally destroyed the game and broke up our gaming group. I was bummed because its what my character would have done...not to be a dick but because he SWORE to protect the king.

  • @highpriestrsw2 Did you remind the party throughout that your character still had sworn himself? Just curious. As GM, i've PURPOSELY done things to drive a wedge between my players, because i know they are there to have fun, and what happens in game doesn't matter between them as people. It's too bad your group broke up.

  • O, and in case anyone is interested, here is a blog I recently started on games design, which is something of a passion of mine. For me, pen&paper (i.e. tabletop roleplaying games) are the very essence of game design. (Despite the fact that I'm currently developing a video game =) ...check out: ineversawthatroll.blogspot.com

  • I run a similar system in terms of in-game reward, although admittedly lacking a physical representation of the reward. I bestow XP on my players whenever they do cool stuff, or play well. (I also take it away sometimes, when they're bad). But what I do is let them 'spend' 1% of XP earned, in-game, as a dice mod. So if they have earned 3500 XP, they can 'spend' up to 35pts on modifying dice. Experience has taught me (if you excuse the pun!) that this works well....

  • wtf? Is he talking to his penis?

Why is the camera in his fracking lap?

What am I - his cat?

    This is creepy.

    Stop looking down on me!

  • Coming soon from Wicked Dead Brweing Co: You Are John Wick's Cat, a roleplaying game about being the first to know.

  • @cra2 Its John Wick, He can Do what he Wants.

  • What do you think would be an appropriate reward 'system' when you're running Call of Cthulhu?

  • Yup... waiting for part 2. Or any other video from you. Just found 'em and I've been watching 'em all.

  • waiting for part 2.

    comming soon?

  • Don't do stupid shit.

    Do the wrong thing.

There's a big difference. There's a difference between setting a dungeon on fire when you see one and rushing to save the girl rather than stop the villain about to destroy the village.

The first is stupid. The second can be debated as being "the wrong thing" but the stupid thing in the second situation is to be "I loot the chick and area." and prop your feet up on the table.

    Stupid bad. Wrong good.

  • My characters always do stupid shit. My GM asked me after my character tripped a trapdoor (portcullis) and I was crushed and debilitated why I sacrificed myself to save another player (because my character's purpose was to keep that character alive because he swore an oath to do so). The rest of the party jumped on me because I dropped the available fighters for any combat situation down by 1 because of the incident.

  • Maybe they should just play WoW instead? Doesn't sound like they were into the RP of it, just the strategy.

  • Actually that's the reason we don't play 4E D&D anymore. Assigning roles to character classes like WOW does makes it feel much more like a strategy wargame than a role playing game.

It's a horrible system. They have dumbed it down and made it a big minis game just to attract the WOW players. :(

  • News you can use. I have enjoyed this one immensely.

I'd have added a caveat about scene stealers using the internal landscapes to steal play time from others. Limit it to one person, one scene per session.

  • Great vid as always!

  • Some stuff I already know on the GM part, but certainly could need a reminder for. (Hadn't thought of just rewarding them with bonus dices though).

However I did learn alot on the player-part. Very useful information that could quickly enrichen the gaming atmosphere.

  • exalted has a great system for this: the stunt system

depending on how awesome you describe it, you get to roll between 1 and 3 extra dice. And if you actually succeed on the roll, you even get motes and willpower back!

  • I've been enjoying your videos from the start.

But I was wondering if in the future you could talk to us a bit of your past experiences: when working on L5R and 7th Sea.

  • Ditto! Though I completely understand the focus on Houses, (for a number of reasons: moving forward, the culmination of your gaming philosophy, working in the context of the latest project and promoting it), I hold and will always cherish my 7th Sea and L5R collections.

  • Good stuff John, thanks!

Hey, to formalise External Exposition in HotB why not wager style? The player calls a flashback scene and wagers a style point. If the scene is cool and advances the game they get it back, if the scene bowls the other players over or throws up a story seed the Gm can use to challenge that player he gets two or three back .

  • I eat this stuff up! Thank you.
