ok, correct me if i'm wrong but from the sounds of it, yabai is close to the english sick. as it can be used for both good things and bad. example: dude, that was so sick! (as in awesome). exam.2 man, that is SICK. (as in messed up.) i know, im close with this idea. "young people use yabai like awful, terrible and crap or terrific, awesome and cool." pretty close to how sick is used in america by teens, right?
I, personally, wouldn't use "sick" in that way, but I think you have the right idea.
Kids in England in the 1980's would say "Wicked", "Bad", etc. in the same way.
I think "Yabai" means "terrible", "awful", etc. but when used in a good sense, you're saying something like "damn this is so good, I think I'm going go crazy". I think "Yabai" refers to you coming close to losing control because of how "cute", "great" something is.
@mauiwowi I don't think this is true. I think men put it more on youtube that's all. But I do think that certain newly discovered cultures have more pull than others. For example, my dad is japanese and my mom is lebanese, and on my mom's side, all my cousins are married to white canadians, and its the white canadians who came into the family; not my cousins who went to theirs. So I think everything goes, but what you see on yutube keep in mind, it's the minority who speaks loud.
@mauiwowi Sorry, what I meant was that Western culture is known and copied since a long time. Now, newly discovered and emerging popular cultures are being turned to. And that's just cycle of life, once these new cultures will be all discovered, people will start being interested in other new cultures.
I have learned this word 'Yabai' when I heard Gyaru Sone saying it when she was eating some kind of a delicious food. So it must have been dangerously good :D.
Great lesson! I learned a lot. I never noticed yabai being used for good things. When did "zen zen" start getting used with non-negative words? I think that happened when I lived there in the 80s, but that's probably just one gaijin's conceit.
@schaelakhan I study a lot of history, and the more I study the more I realize that so many things proper to our own culture come from another culture! So many mix and and borrowing, it's so interesting to discover all!
@WorldOfSnakes Thanks for takeing the time to reply. It is so true Cultures mix and people forget. Not just culture or language but people also. Its great to know we are all related one big family. Notice I didn't add "happy"....big happy family, but like a real family we all have issues to work out.
I personally don't use the term "yabai" myself because of it's "wrong" usage of the meaning, and also, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but the word "yabai" originates from the Yakuzas.
Leave it to the young to use a word to mean opposites like awful, terrible, crap, terrific, amazing, and cool. One of the common words when I was young was "wicked" to imply something was really cool and amazing.
@P00P0STER0US You remind me I went to New York for a visit, and it was really beautiful, like in the pictures...but what I couldn't see in the pictures were the horrible garbage smell all over the city! I wonder if its like this all the time!
Huh, very interesting. I think やばい was being used when we were both younger, TJG. I don't used that word either too.
The root of the word is very interseting = いや、あぶない(でござる)。 That's like when I looked up マブイ (which is not used anymore, lol) was used in the early 1900's. It is short for まぶしい 。

Which can be used for describing both good or bad ...
