  • sugoi = yabai = great

  • YABAI!!!!!!!

  • MAN-WOMAN-FILM = F.M.L.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yabai, yabai, yabai zutto!

  • Yabai confuses me with Yaiba now.

  • In my opinion, yabai is closer to "oh no" "oh gosh" "oh my god"

Which can be used for describing both good or bad ...

just my few cents worth of my opinion =)

  • How do you write yabai in Kanji? Got a Kanji for that???

  • @uzerofutube i don't think there's any kanji for yabai =)

Try googling "harajuku wiki" and scroll down. There's an article that gives the meaning as well as a lot of interesting info on the place.

  • The woman at 0:12 is extremely beautiful. Oh my Goodness!

  • @JazzyZenBrotha she is Asahi , manwomanfilm . I love her!

  • Yabai!! 世代によって、同じ言葉でも意味や使い方が違いますよね。

    人は年老いても言葉は生き残り進化してゆく・・・諸行無常の響きアリ・・・かな?

  • CAKESBOMB!!!!! ASDF MOVE =D

  • ok, correct me if i'm wrong but from the sounds of it, yabai is close to the english sick. as it can be used for both good things and bad. example: dude, that was so sick! (as in awesome). exam.2 man, that is SICK. (as in messed up.) i know, im close with this idea. "young people use yabai like awful, terrible and crap or terrific, awesome and cool." pretty close to how sick is used in america by teens, right?

  • @youfan2008

I, personally, wouldn't use "sick" in that way, but I think you have the right idea.

Kids in England in the 1980's would say "Wicked", "Bad", etc. in the same way.

I think "Yabai" means "terrible", "awful", etc. but when used in a good sense, you're saying something like "damn this is so good, I think I'm going go crazy". I think "Yabai" refers to you coming close to losing control because of how "cute", "great" something is.

At least that 's my interpretation, anyhow.

  • bad assというのをよくコメント欄で見るけど、たぶんやばいとか半端ないというのはこのbad assと訳すのが一番近いんじゃないでしょうか。

    口語表現的に言っても元は悪い意味だという点でも。

    やべー、スゲー、はんぱねー = bad ass!

  • @supercross1985 Young in heart! Young in heart my friend!

  • why is it always men who are white/non japanese into japanese or asian women?

  • @mauiwowi I don't think this is true. I think men put it more on youtube that's all. But I do think that certain newly discovered cultures have more pull than others. For example, my dad is japanese and my mom is lebanese, and on my mom's side, all my cousins are married to white canadians, and its the white canadians who came into the family; not my cousins who went to theirs. So I think everything goes, but what you see on yutube keep in mind, it's the minority who speaks loud.

  • @mauiwowi Sorry, what I meant was that Western culture is known and copied since a long time. Now, newly discovered and emerging popular cultures are being turned to. And that's just cycle of life, once these new cultures will be all discovered, people will start being interested in other new cultures.

  • やばいゼ!その場所を知っている。場所が新宿じゃない!?イタリアのレストラン。そのレストランのイタリアのビールがチョうまい!カワイイgirls!

  • Another note for some people about "Yabai". The way these girls are using it is quite girly so guys be careful, in where you say it and how.

  • waaa yabai!!!! manwomanfilm!!!! I love her so much

    you guys are so pretty!!!

  • Young people? What are you... "Arafo"? ;P

  • I have learned this word 'Yabai' when I heard Gyaru Sone saying it when she was eating some kind of a delicious food. So it must have been dangerously good :D.

  • Ahaha I learned about Yabi from Jun Matsumoto's song 'Yabai Yabai Yabai' X]

  • Great lesson! I learned a lot. I never noticed yabai being used for good things. When did "zen zen" start getting used with non-negative words? I think that happened when I lived there in the 80s, but that's probably just one gaijin's conceit.

  • This video is sick, and the women are pfat.

  • omfg that opening was epic EPIC I TELL YOU

    i am in love <3

  • 'for young people' lol TJG is not young!!!!

  • I heard you can socialize them, but never domesticate them. This proves it.

  • おもしろいです

  • Wow. Who is that girl in the brown jacket at 0:06?

    She's pretty cute :D

  • I always use やばい because I'm a Japanese teenager! lol OMG You took this video at Starbacks 新宿サザンテラス店. I often go there after school .Arisa

  • WOW! manwomanfilm is very very pretty! WOW! Really really yabai !

  • @wynwyn2007 Yeah, just like thatjapanesegirl!

  • Hmmm... Interesting word...

  • I don't understand- wait- is it like in the states where we say Bad for bad and good?

  • おにやばい! "Deamon Bad!" = very bad

  • Nice japanese lesson . どうも ありがとう!じゃ ('-^)

  • 東京に行ったの?

did you took this on 新宿? somewhere near 南口...either on starbucks or krispy kreme doughnuts..かな。。

  • I read that in comics all the time lol.

  • @Ido013 and it is usually used for showing that they're in trouble, or that they could get into trouble~ sometimes it's written ヤベー(yabee)

  • Wow, thanks for teaching us the origin of the word, that's really interesting. :)

  • Similar to "Oh my gosh".

  • I love your videos. Found something interesting, did you know that the word arigato may come from Portuguese Obrigado, which means thank you as well.

  • @schaelakhan I study a lot of history, and the more I study the more I realize that so many things proper to our own culture come from another culture! So many mix and and borrowing, it's so interesting to discover all!

  • @WorldOfSnakes Thanks for takeing the time to reply. It is so true Cultures mix and people forget. Not just culture or language but people also. Its great to know we are all related one big family. Notice I didn't add "happy"....big happy family, but like a real family we all have issues to work out.

  • Yabaiiiiiiii!!!!!!!!

  • From what I understood, it's like when North American kids use "sick" to describe something awesome.

    "Dude, those pants are sick."

  • manwomanfilm ..... yummy, bien bonita eres

  • I personally don't use the term "yabai" myself because of it's "wrong" usage of the meaning, and also, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but the word "yabai" originates from the Yakuzas.

  • that word is confusing o_O

  • やばい楽しかったです!!thanks you<333

  • So, its like the same thing as oishi sorta

  • I always wondered about this word. Now i know i just wont use it much, lol cause its confusing. lol

  • @pylyo I asked myself that same question

  • イアリングマジ可愛いですけど!ヤバイな!笑

  • how do i win a date with you and manwomanfilm lol xD

  • I love manwomanfilm<33

  • Leave it to the young to use a word to mean opposites like awful, terrible, crap, terrific, amazing, and cool. One of the common words when I was young was "wicked" to imply something was really cool and amazing.

  • @P00P0STER0US

Are you from the Boston area?

  • @shimewaza No but I was in Boston for about 5 hours once and I really liked it, except for the stinky air.

  • @P00P0STER0US You remind me I went to New York for a visit, and it was really beautiful, like in the pictures...but what I couldn't see in the pictures were the horrible garbage smell all over the city! I wonder if its like this all the time!

  • Thanks for explaining it. :)

  • Well luckily for me i'm starting to get too old to use slang. :P

  • Interesting video. Thanks.

  • making fun of ppl in harajuku? :-\

  • Yeah, that happnes a lot with lots of words (:

  • Nice video :)

  • This is great, where were you when you took this video? Natsukashiiiiiii!!!! I need to visit Japan soon.

  • Oh man, like Japanese wasn't already hard enough... I will never be able to learn all of this...

  • @MrBigall You can do it!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • how do you say pants in japanese?

  • The way I can imagine them using it in English is like "No way!" or "Shut up!" in a silly girly, friendly way.

  • @r4x2 I mean, in the context of how they seemed to be using it in that specific situation.

  • haha its always like that with young people.. next thing u dont know wat they be talking about but man.. hawt japanese girls oh yea!

  • these young kids with their slang!

  • Huh, very interesting. I think やばい was being used when we were both younger, TJG. I don't used that word either too.

The root of the word is very interseting = いや、あぶない(でござる)。 That's like when I looked up マブイ (which is not used anymore, lol) was used in the early 1900's. It is short for まぶしい 。

  • Its a good thing I subscribed :D

  • 例えばこんなんのはどう? Yabai originally has negative meaning, but the way young generations uses it, they use it whenever anything is in extreme, good or bad.

  • Video response for you, YABAI GIRL!
