Can i ask something? How can you tell the difference between a viola playing a high note and a violin playing a low note? They sound exactly the same!
THANKYOU! Ive been looking everywhere to find a vid like this. Its helped me decide that i do want a viola. now i jsut hav to find a good website.....
the viola daa i got vids of me playing my viola on my channal and its not as good as tat but ill get that good one day i hope so I LUV THE VIOLA VIOLA VIOLA
It depends on the style. If you want a brighter tone such as with this kind of blues I say violin but if you want the sleazy vaudville stripteasy sound viola all the way.
Viola. The sound is deeper and it gives that mellow, rich bluegrass feeling. It's almost like a banjo, but it's bowed and doesn't have that velum. I think the violin is too high toned for bluegrass; it gives too much of a classical feeling which is not desired in this. And then again, the cello is already too far so its the viola.
Viola is less squeaky sound richer and deeper I think its a question of different pieces of music suit either instrument a bit like Trumpet and flugelhorn my Daughter is a good trumpet player and she wants a violin to have a change of instrument she wanst to teach herself at home first can you recommend or have any tips on buying a cheaper instrument to start on?
D:< darn im having no luck choosing im currently doing the violin but i origionaly wanted to do viola hard to decide :P its like choosing between killing a box of puppies and a box of kittens
@meima17 thank you, ps. i play the viola. Anyway, think of a "strings only" orchestra without violas. There's the base that makes a nice low sound to play with, the cellos who give you that sound right in between, and the violins who give you the high sound to play with. But, without the violas, those violins are gonna annoy you with the fricken lound, high sound. The viola, I say, was made to give the violin more power and a deeper tone.
its all good. its hard at first but then it is easy and you get to play more for years and years and there is no more fun than playing music. I don't know nothing. I love all my string instruments. learn the blues progression and you will have fun. good luck. just do it a few minutes a day regularly and you will always get better. jive
i need help im 13 and want to pllay ethier viola, cello,or violin can u guys help me decide? if u could give me reasons too i would be really gratefull!!!!
@honeybearUSA String instruments are always a good choice! Learn to play the violin first (you can swop to the viola any time later). Hire a cello at the same time and see what TEQUNIQUE you prefer. I personally love the sound of my viola but can understand every cello player as well. Enjoy!
@honeybearUSA Viola. They're in high demand and a lot of people need violists. There aren't enough of them in the world. Then again it should be your personal preference.
both are beautiful insterments. i prefer the viola. i like the sound better and its nice to know i can play something that a lot of people can't. i was recently forced to play piano and i ended up being a natural. i always try to go for the less popular insterments though such as the bass and accordion. i guess i just have a different point of veiw. i still try to respect all other insterments around me because they're all beautiful in their own uniqe way. i can see that and im only 12
if u take it like theat i think double bass will win, the lower is beter for blues sooo, its normal for the viola to win, violin its not made for blues, or maybe a electrci 5 string one, a hybrid from viola and violin from C to A string.
viola has a greate sound, a deeper one, this song sound greate, but all blues songs will sound good on viola ? violin is well known for the A string, a string theat viola doesent have so u cant realy compair them for just one song? but for blues i think viola is better, and if u need a hybrid instrument try 5 string electric violin the combination from viola and violin, and u got them in one pice
Hi, I just want to ask how long have been on the viola and violin, and what age did you start learning? Is it too late for me to learn? I'm already 19yrs old and I so badly want to learn either the viola or violin.
Why are people being so pissy about viola vs. violin deal? They are NEARLY the same, except one is a bit bigger and has a lower sound. Trying to argue that your favorite is better just makes you look petty and jealous. Why can't we all just unite to say that violin/viola is better than guitar, or that Strings is the best instrument group?
Yea, that's why I mentioned a 5 string a few days ago. Viola is CGDA and violin is GDAE string-wise. Get a 5 string and have the best of both. CGDAE! Awesome for electric especially!
A girl in my orchestra about 15 years ago was so tall she had a hard time playing a full sized violin - she used a viola with violin tuning. Pretty nice sound out of it too.
I'd say not as nice as the sound from the 100 year old Strad-style violin I was blessed to be playing (not that I ever got the most out of it or ever came close to a really accomplished violin player I know when she played it) - but nice none the less.
@SomeonewhoisFrench are favorite instrument is what we like, what do you care weather we say are favorite is better, thats are opinion, what do you care, sheesh you!
@OrientalBrandon I don't care if you have an opinion about it. I care when people start getting into petty arguments over their opinions and assert their opinions as facts.
@SomeonewhoisFrench well then, why do you care if we argue, let us argue if we want to! It's are business and if you choose not to argue just don't argue, that simple!
@OrientalBrandon Hmm. I'd say I probably care because I don't have much to do, and I'm nosy, so I try to help others with constructive criticisms, such as not to argue over petty things, but these are usually not constructive at all and probably a bit hypocritical. So, I'm sorry.
@SomeonewhoisFrench If the viola and the violin where the "same" or "nearly the same", why that would exist SEPARATE specialties for each of these 2 instruments?
Violin isn't whiny if you play it right, and viola can sound just as whiny if you play it wrong. I enjoy both instruments though, and I'm thinking about getting a 5 string. Anyway, Mr Billy up there plays fast, but it's sloppy on both instruments. He was constantly crossing strings, and between that and the breakneck speed, he sacrificed most of his good tone. Slow it down and you might find the blues in there somewhere. Put some heart in it. Notes for the sake of notes is emotionless (to me).
@ClueLou Violin is in treble, and Viola in alto. Note-wise, that's G and C respectively. I think trombone is also in C-clef, but I don't know any instruments other than that one that use this clef. I'm sure there's a few. Anyway, the open G on violin is actually in base clef up to the middle C, but it's just marked with ledger lines on sheet music.

Violas are way better then violins. Violins are to high and sound horrible, while violas are lower and sound way better. And plus theres to many violins. And the only reason there are so many violins is because the violin is more popular then the viola.
its because violin is much easier to play than the viola..in our country there are less viola teachers than the violin..thats why many are still in violin..
@Hugo7776 ...because once you got acoustumed to the G-key and learn about all those viola jokes you think it's uncool - though it isn't (it's only a little harder tequnically): The sound itsself is gourgious and versatile. Compare it!

@Hugo7776 Violin is very used everywhere, viola has not a lot of concerto or sonata like violins, and i was not rellay existing at the "baroque" period (there was cellos).
