Great concept, for people who think "local" and not far beyond their immediate community. And completely impractical in non-agricultural areas where nothing grows and everything needs to be transported in: e.g. Resolut Bay.
Also prices will necessarily be higher on account of the increase need of staff. As bad as grocery stores are, they operates very efficiently with no more than cashiers and a optional stock clerks; operating a all bring your own container bulk grocery will require having staff at every counter to measure and weigh what goes in to the clients heavy, or light, containers.
I see this as a communist experiment, great on paper, but epic fail in practice.
@ii53 That is one of the dumbest things I've read all week. It's quite obvious prices will be higher. But how does this have anything to do with communism? You are a absolute dolt for writing something so incredibly moronic.
That's either brilliant, or the dumbest idea ever. It sounds nice, but I can't picture people bringing their containers to the store and filling them with milk, flour, coffee, honey, or whatever. Perhaps some kind of biodegradable containers which customers could buy for a few cents might work better. I would be very interested to visit this store when it opens in Austin.
This is Awesome! I have been doing the zero waste thing for a little while now and it has been so hard with stores being hateful about me bringing my own jars. I have blogged about it all. trashfreeliving.blogspot.com I put this video on there too to spread the word :) I am in Seattle, we need a store like this!
Please tell me how I can get one of these by where I live

Is this another Whole Foods-like supermarket with a bulk section or is the entire store selling bulk?

I am pretty sure this is how grocery stores started. So it isn't the first.

Rather than say "Please come to ______", how about saying, "how can we get something like that started in my area??"
The best business is in duplication!

Please come up to Ohio and into the New England area, too. You'd do quite well there I believe!
