Even as a psychologist, I'm still a rare person who understands this idea: Most of what we perceive as unique to each gender is mainly NATURAL, HUMAN emotions. No PERSON (not just a MAN), wants to feel her/his loved one wants to change her/him. It would hurt ANYONE. Exactly. In our societies, if a man shows his true fears/feelings, he's not a "real man", and if a woman shows her real strength, she is not considered "feminine enough". Unfortunately, both women and men suffer from these rediculous stereotypes. Admitting deeper feelings can be scary for ANYONE in relationships, because it forces both parties to deal with their own vulnerabilities on a deeper level. So, it becomes easier to just pretend that those feelings (hers AND his) simply don't exist.

Well, as my grandma used to say, you have to teach folks HOW to love. A lot of times what we think is loving the other person can do more harm than good. I think one good place to start is to be more honest with ourselves about our own feelings, then give our partners "permission" (in our own minds) to deal with the same issues that we go through. That tends to help toward removing all the gender specific silliness from the equation and gets us back to dealing with each other as individuals.

Even as a psychologist, I'm still a rare person who understands this idea: Most of what we perceive as unique to each gender is mainly NATURAL, HUMAN emotions. No PERSON (not just a MAN), wants to feel her/his loved one wants to change her/him. It would hurt ANYONE. I also understand that ANY double standard is not fair, including the reduculous idea that a man is not allowed to make the same mistakes as his lady. I go out of my way to treat my husband as I want to be treated. It's called LOVE!

Exactly. In our societies, if a man shows his true fears/feelings, he's not a "real man", and if a woman shows her real strength, she is not considered "feminine enough". Unfortunately, both women and men suffer from these rediculous stereotypes. Admitting deeper feelings can be scary for ANYONE in relationships, because it forces both parties to deal with their own vulnerabilities on a deeper level. So, it becomes easier to just pretend that those feelings (hers AND his) simply don't exist.

Well, as my grandma used to say, you have to teach folks HOW to love. A lot of times what we think is loving the other person can do more harm than good. I think one good place to start is to be more honest with ourselves about our own feelings, then give our partners "permission" (in our own minds) to deal with the same issues that we go through. That tends to help toward removing all the gender specific silliness from the equation and gets us back to dealing with each other as individuals.

No problem. As an artist, musician/producer, psychologist, writer and educator myself, I have these kinds of conversations with people all the time, about many different issues, not just relationship issues, and I find that all kinds of daily events can trigger these discussions. It's not just music, but politics, news reports or any daily event can be good springboards for deeper conversations about all kinds of things that affect our lives. Thanks for talking to me as well.
