same thing here about a month prior to your posting with my HP pavilion a6620n which looks a lot like yours at a glance. i went ahead and popped the case, grounded myself out, transfer HDD to a old $30 emachine i bouht of craigslist and extracted what i needed there. to anyone who finds them selves with a MBR problem & no OS/Repair disk to go forth with; unsure what terms to search for when looking for software to assist in booting i suggest BARTpe or a Linux live distro like Ubuntu.
