  • INCREDIBLE my mentor!!!

  • 3:04 Is that 2pac?

  • "too much talking" heart beat ... cool as cucumber P&L foxy x

  • wouldn't it have been a revelation to have gotten this thing in the hands of jaco....just imagine.

  • @Putaspellonyou Well, Alphonso Johnson was playing a stick around 1976-ish when Jaco REALLY hit big. I think Jaco's thing was staking a place for the elctric bass guitar as a "legit" jazz instrument (particularly the fretless). But in dreamland? Yeah, he would have shredded the bejesus out of the stick.... or the Warr Guitar.

  • "Talk...its only talk..."

  • es que bn podrido jajaja

  • chuck norris is there?

  • Tell that kid to shut up while the master is talking!

  • not as good as i thought it was going to be

  • Wow, past 60 and the man shows barely any signs of age. He still plays like a beast, too.

  • cool!!!

  • I'm selling my chapman stick.

Don't hesitate contact me for further details.

  • Mr. Levin is GREAT I saw him with P.Gabriel, King Crimson, Stick Men at BCN.

  • Actually he can pretty much play it all. He's not specifically a 'rock' player. Levin started out playing classical music, then became a jazz player in Gap Mangione's and Chuck Mangione's bands (where drummer Steve Gadd also started; Gadd & Levin make up one of the greatest rhythm sections ever on Chuck Mangione's "Alive!" album from 1972). Later, he was a session bassist all through the seventies with thousands of credits to his name before he even met Peter Gabriel or Robert Fripp.

  • @metamorphosis67 You are absolutely right, my friend. He also played with Buddy Rich and John Lennon. Great to see that it hasn't gone to his head!!

  • jeez. he's making it all up. you wud have thought he cud even have played something to impress. or even in time.

  • only watch guillermo cides

  • @leetheviolet I'm not a rocker, though I love a lot of rock bands. I'm a lover of good sound - and especially people who create new sounds for the musical world to experience, experiment and learn from. I come from a jazz, r&b, soul and blues background. I am eclectic and love most music genres from all countries. The musical realm is far more broad and embracing than our own individual tastes. That's the pleasure of it - it caters for everyone in the world.

  • @Emelie99

if you love music, then where is your innovative creativity gene, my friend?

  • rockers out to defend his beloved tony levin, if they knew something of the history of jazz, this type does not even to be as experimental as a jazz musician, example: Scott Kinsey

perhaps within the experimental rock you consider it but for a jazz musician is little, is newly exploring something that has already been done for years and that most of you do not know if they knew the new concept that has a type as could perhaps understand Janek Gwizdala

  • is so boring

richard bona better had touched that was nearby or especially JANEK GWIZDALA (pure true feeling)!!!!

  • @leetheviolet

you don't know your music history well, do you? who do you think came along first?

  • he's good but ohh, my head aches!!

  • yet another video ruined by somebody who doesn't have a

clue about holding the camera steady, but thats so typical

of youtube in general.PEOPLE, invest in a tripod or monopod

and lay off the zoom lever if you want good video and save us

all the nausea from this totally annoying video idiocy.

  • .....then minimize your screen and just LISTEN to what Tony has to say! Just as informative.

    wow.

nothing better to do than complain about youtube videos.....get a life. Better yet, wheres video of YOU playing?

  • @bob4obama

are you wanting to learn sound by watching? or learn to play by listening?

If it is the latter, then you don't need a tripod ... maybe only an ipod

  • Victor Wooten? LMAO....the guys way too busy of a bass player...I don't get people with this Victor Wooten crap..Tony levin smokes Wooten in all aspects of musicality....Levin was just instructing people on the techniques of his playing.

  • @ProgressiveMachinery - to me, a player is busy when he's not in the pocket, and chops out to compensate. this forsakes all melody and groove. wooten deserves his status imo. as do all the top dogs. there is no best, only favorites.

  • Chapman Stick might be a bit harder to play without a drummer. There might be a little bit of rubato here, but check out the groove when he starts 'Elephant Talk'.

  • Levin has made some great music, and I saw him w/ Gabriel, fabulous.

  • i saw wooten w/ bela fleck and he was literally spitting distance. he is a fantastic bassist, and I am sorry for anyone who says he is not good, as you missed out on enjoying some music. lighten up.

  • lil wayne?

  • Sorry, but that is not a place for a child crying. Is a rare moment of one of the most genius of progressive rock of XX century.

Was a great lack of education of thet mother/father whos child is crying.

Great lack of education and conscience.

    From Portugal.

    We love you, Tony.

  • Clearly you don't have kids At least I hope you don't !!

  • Just because you have kids doesn't mean thry/you are some god upon the earth. YOU chose to have them (unless you were raped, and even then abortion is still legal, your beliefs are still your choice and you can, and did, choose), and since YOU chose to have them, YOU should not be disrespectful of something others paid upwards of $100 for, from going out to eat to a bass clinic. Have respect for others out there, nobody else wanted your children, don't force them on others.

    Tony Levin rocks

  • what an Idiot!

  • What a compliment...Jonas And Janek both walk into the room while Tony is playing...

  • a little known fact: tony levin actually has 27 fingers

  • genius attracts the like, hence Levin,Fripp,Gabriel,

    Bruford,Belew, etc...

  • The 38.000 fans of Tony levin in Argentina had come to a decision, Tony Levin will be declared Argentinian ...due to Argentinian`s will! and because like Gardel its better every day!

  • like a god like tony would want to have anything to do with your poor country

  • Oh my that's Janek Gwizdala just walled in at 4.12.

    Another bass god.

  • Yeah he's great. Next time keep the camera on him instead of your idiot friends!

  • how is the strings divided? thickest string in middle?

  • yes. the bass strings are tuned in ascending 5ths, the treble strings in 4ths, so its like a lefty cello grafted onto a righty guitar.

  • yeah figured that out, thanks anyway, its an intressting sollution to a tap base, unlike the normal 12 string that just put more strings along the neck

  • are chapman's fretted?

  • Yes, they are. But as you can customize your order, you can ask for it being fretless, or just partially fretted. I've seen a Chapman Stick that was fretless only on the 3 lowest strings. But you can ask almost anything when ordering (the kind of wood, etc...)

  • Tony is arguably "the" best bass players on the planet! Like no other... 100% unique! WAY to bad A.D.D. guy filmed all the blah blah and little to none of the man poking the fret board.... what a waste!

  • Comment removed

  • not the greatest stick player , but a legendary bassist

  • who's filming this?....stevie wonder?

  • thats a sweet lookin bass! go tony go!

  • Wow, Larry David plays the Stick? Amazing!

  • he plays stick! thats awsome bass with sticks on his fingers lol

  • He's my uncle. :D

  • at 4:05 he plays Elephant Talk! COOL! OMG SUPER COOL! VERY AWESOME!!!!1111 z0mg!!111

  • totally lost. wtf.

  • Tony Levin is ULTRA cool!

  • was that Lil' Wayne??

  • dont think so

  • the guy sure looks like him lol, I'm not raccist if anyone decides to accuse me of that.

  • Lil'shit is not a musician, just a bitch tryin' to rap, so has nothing to do in a clinic of bass.

I wont say you are racist, maybe fool, or bling haha.

  • at 2:56. be a little more observant. and yes I know he's a talentless rapper, but hey, that guy is a dead ringer.

  • man, i am serious, lil bitch has a monkey mouth, this guy looks more bigger, but anyways, if you say that is him its alright.

    peace.

  • hmm he talks a lot.

  • Dude. Hold the f-in camera STILL! I got sick watching this damn thing.

  • agree with stabileownzwow

  • Is this like a TV show???? if it is what channel is it on????

  • hes one of the most skilled bassists in the world, so unless you're victor wooten you shouls shut up. hes played in liquid tension experiment

  • Wait, who's that at 2:50 to 3:00? Is it Bingo from the Banana Splits or Jonas Hellborg?

  • Ahahahaha!! =D

I did not know what Bingo from the Banana is, but when I googled it, I laughed so much. I don't know why it's minuted. Pretty damn funny. Although, Jonas is very handsome guy.

  • minused I meant

  • INCREDIBLE Bass Player! Thanks for posting!

  • tony rules

  • hahahaha "john myung has a rival" WTF? myung is good but levin is god

  • does the chapman stick actually belong to bass instruments? bring on the fire.

  • Actually, there's a Stick that's just an 8 string, in a bass tuning, but your point is well taken. But why clasify?

Tony is one of the greatest bass players ever, who plays the stick.

  • since i don't know wether it's a class of instruments on it's own (which it is.) or just a modification of another bass guitar.

  • These are called 'tap guitars' : it includes the Stick, the Warr guitar and a few other instruments ingluding sum by french luthierlotsa great luthiers are french : old tradition in this country)... They go generally from 8 to 14 strings, and consider u got the bass and the guitar at once, and even the range of a piano on the 14 strs ones... in 1991, there were 2500 sticks on the planet... Can't tell now... Tried it once : have fun if u want to play this : it's really tough

  • Could be - but the electric bass is further from the Double bass (or upright) than the stick is from the electric. And if Victor Wooten (or Tony) is tapping an electric, it's even closer still....and what of the first classical musicials who started plucking the upright, rather than bowing it as a bass violin as it was originall intended....and so on...

  • nice camera man!!

  • Might use this camera man for my wedding if i marry a real ugly bitch.

  • Awesome Tony Levin the camera man should have his st. vitous dance looked at !

  • "John Myung has a rival"? T. Levin has been playing the Chapman Stick since the 70's, on Peter Gabriel's solo records. Myung started polaying it about 25 years later. Pls. check your sources.

  • @randee99 nt 2 mention that Levin has featured in over 500 albums as a session muscian

  • @randee99 also John Myung doesn't play the stick that much.

  • @randee99

    and KING CRIMSON!

    FUCK YA!

  • John Myung has MANY rivals. Dream Theater is not the only band with a great/skilled bassist

  • myung wins the award for person who hates smiling.

    my opinion its:

    Tony levin

and then battle between myung and billy sheehan

  • yeah, the battle beetween myung and sheehan will be awesome!

  • Rival? You mean, Tony Levin has a classmate!!

Myung is really good, one of the best bass players today, but Tony Levin has 30 years playing.

  • Well, I'd say that Tony plays in fact for around 50 years now, he must be around 60 old now... And as grat bassists, go look in jazz too... Whatabout Alain Caron, Stanley Clarke, john Patitucci and I forget hudreds of people... remember that music is not sports but art : competition is futile, except for boring people that got nuttin better to do but puttin their fantasms on others. And there are totally unknown people that play really great too

  • yo dude fast forward a bit....he's playing ,i think it's called the Chapman Stick.Sounds a bit like your boy.

  • You're very welcome! FYI: The video cuts off right before Tony explains that the bass line that he's playing was referred to as the "Freebird" of the stick! The room erupts in laughter of course! Great moment!

  • Hey...that is brilliant! I just adore Tony Levin... Did you get any more? What I would give to have been able to attend that forum....

Thanks for posting it to YouTube... : D
