@nenblom American Airlines bought TWA in 2001, when they flew its ceremonial last flight - Flight 220 - from St. Louis to Las Vegas on December 1. It was also when all TWA routes had officially become that of AA's.

i dont agree with the statement that it was destroyed after 75 years by 1 greedy man. the airline was doomed already. It was for the better for AA to take TWA over.
@fcdrre1 You think it was for the better for AA/AMR to sell TWA employees a merger that they have from day one formulated as a "hostile takeover" were TWA crews and staff were to be systematically face out, liquidated and all for some international gateways they would never had access to on their own?
I wait patiently for the day that DL/NW & UA/CO will put them out of business!
@TWTR4EVER Hector, i can't believe your so bitter after all these years!, Last I heard your bar (The Cock Pit) in Miami was a going concern!, Believe me "The Stewardess" crap is not what it used to be, you were lucky to be terminated from TWA
While AA might have somewhat screwed TWA, what would have happened if they didn't intervene? Go bankrupt due to the Icahn Karabu scheme and still have nothing left (Apparantly they were days away from filing for bankruptcy). Stupid Carl Icahn screwed everything right up at TWA. RIP.

Great Video!!!! I Love and miss TWA, I worked there as an Aircraft Mechanic in the 1990's. Thank you very much for creating this video, it brought back many memories.
Thanks for the info TWTR4EVER, very interesting backgund. I'm interested in yr comment - about the Super Constellation,- "developed by Lockheed to give PAn Am a run for their money." What planes were Pan Am using? Were Lockheed blocked from selling them to Pan Am?
I heard they leaked oil all over the runways,- the RAF laid on special sand boxes to be placed under their engines when they very occasionally stopped at an RAF base.
@betelorg (PT-1) The Lockheed Constellation is born in 1939, pre WW2 with Howard Hughes requesting a 40 passenger pressurized cabin airliner from Lockheed for transcontinental flights (3,500m / 5,630km) her speed was 340mph/483km per hour. The intricate design was taken by Lockheed but Mr.Hughes was involved every inch of the way in the projects development! As the USA enter WW2 many were commission to the war effort before later being retrofitted into civilian commercial aviation!
@betelorg (PT-2) TWA's specifications regarding cabin layouts and passenger comfort were unmatched in 2/6/46 when the first TWA Constellation open the new New York to Paris route that Juan Tripp/ Pan Am together with his bought and paid for politicians managed to keep as a monopoly for years! Pan Am will get their Constellations on 6/17/47 were as a marketing strategy were put into Pan Am flight #1, (around the world route) flight they operated for nearly 40 years!
@betelorg (PT-3) The DC-4 that evolved into the DC-6 & DC-7 would be her competitor, never as glamorous nor revered as The Constellation. The record belongs to TWA when in 9/29/57 she flew London to San Francisco in 23hrs & 19min TWA & Trans*Brasil Ailines, two airlines that I'm proud to have call home! TW/Howard Hughes & TR/Dr. Omar Fontana even some generations apart, both pioneers in the aviation of their respective countries!
@betelorg Pan Am was using the Boeing B. 377 Stratocruiser, until the Douglas DC-6B came out, then they upgraded to the Douglas DC-7C Seven Seas. I believe Eastern was another customer of the Super Constellation. The Constellation was developed as the XB-30 for bombing Japan. When, Lockheed lost the bid to Boeing, the design was converted from bomber to transport, where it proved to be superior to the Douglas C-54. The originial name of the Connie was the C-69.
Delta almost bit the dust also until they brought in experts & saved the airline and gave it a fresh new look ! They were down to $1.78 a share in 2008 I brought 1000 shares and today ththe stock is up to $12.00 a share & rising thanks to the Northwest merger.
This is a beautifully put together video with THE perfect choice of track by Arrow Smith. I guess a lot of it is simulation, I don't know? Is that really a StrataCruiser with the 3 fins? All airlines are struggling at present except for Air Lingus, who have loads of money. However, having flown with them once it was a frightful experience, particularly when the cost of flying was about 3 times the quoted seat price. I hope to never repeat it!
@betelorg The aircraft with the three tail rotters was the Lockheed Constellation, Super Connie as it was called, it was developed together between TWA top brass Jack Frye, Paul Richter, Walt Hamilton and the one and only Howard Hughes together with Lockheed to give PAn Am a run for their money and to prepare TWA post WW2 for its big international expansion. Still for my generation (1970's) if you aim to break into the industry TWA was the airline you aim to be your employer!
You're on crack. TWA was screwed over a long time before TWA 800 by a corporate raider by the name of Carl Icahn. Flight 800 didn't help matters, but it wasn't the sole reason for TWA being bought out of bankruptcy by AA. It also wasn't a merger - TWA simultaneously declared bankruptcy for the third and final time, and AA then acquired the assets in a packaged deal.
queenregina1967>>> First of all TWA was not cancelled like a show or an event, TWA due to financial problems exasperated by years of management betrayal by CEO's Carl Icahn,(85/93) William R. After TWA's demise and the awful way their staff was treated by AA I have only boarded AA once since. I had no other choice at the time. TWA was a fantastic airline and even during the rough times they really tried to keep it together and they were always professional. I did notice after ICAHN got into the picture everything started to unravel fast and once he was gone they really tried but at that point the damage was too great. It was really sad for me to see them go.
My dad is a furloughed TWA pilot. He too has moved on (JetBlue A320 F/O, recalled to AA but deferred it to wait until this economy improves), but TWA holds a special place in all of us. Best of luck to you.

im really sad that i only started getting into planes a year ago. i have been on TWA once, when i was a kid. i wish i knew what type of plane it was.

twa has a soft spot in my heart because there were so many of them in my city and it was my first flight ever....
with pan am and twa gone...american airlines is the last airline of the legacy golden era...but from what i heard other people say, AA has gone down hill too. i dont know if its true or not.
@julieluvpink yeah, it has, but it's not as bad as an airline like united. its not terrible, at least in my opinion, but i have heard stories that they screwed twa on purpose when the airliner was acquired
@julieluvpink Regarding American Airlines they are the reason of TWA's demise, they offer a merger and they deliver a hostile take over! False promises to the TWA work force, specially the Inflight Crews left out of over 8,000 employees at the time of the union of AA & TW with less than 1000 employed today! The use 9/11 to furlough the flight attendants who were put in the bottom of the seniority list until by law after 5 years they lost the recall rights, they are out of a job.
@TWTR4EVER Our uniforms together with Braniff were the envy of the industry! Created by Ralph Lauren in dark navy blue, almost black, double breasted with burgundy military uniform striping on the bottom of the sleeves, rear shoulder epaulettes for mayor flexibility, white shirts, navy with burgundy and white stripes diagonally ties and scarfs, black regulation shoes, purses and crew luggage! Layovers in Hilton Internationals! Trans World Airlines #1
@TWTR4EVER Yes Hector, You Certainly were Stunning in that TWA outfit!, Did you ever Open That Puerto Rican Gay Bar you used to talk about?, Steve & Larry ended up moving in together , We still kill ourselves Laughing when we think about your Carmen Miranda, Salute to Fruit Drag Show Tribute you did @ The TWA Talent Night in Kansas!, LOL!!!!!, Hope all is well!
@TheReturnOfBigBear You obviously don't know TWTR4EVER and have some personal agenda as he's respected by all at TWA, yes he's Gay and so do I, your insults and fabrications denote your social background!
We know each other for over 20 years, I know his long term partner and was with him last week in L.A. while he was on a layover!
Today we both fly for new carriers and keep in touch, as many ex-TWA would testify!
Im so glad TWA is gone. .. Its to bad it didnt happen long before. Then maybe everyone who died on TWA 800 might still be here. That old plane should of never been in the air!!!!!
What good is that going to do if those old planes are still being used by Joe Doe's air ways, the plane can be as old as it ever gets as long as the maintenance are done proprely, If flight 800 hadnt crashed with TWA, it would have crashed with AA,CO UAL,Jet blue or whichever ailine would have bought it.
What is your back ground on aviation maintenance to determ when an airplane is too old t to fly. If the plane is too old to fly, you should blame on NTSB or FAA for giving the plane the airworthness certificate. Twa maintained the plane according to FAR, Please, learn how to accuse the proper person..
By the way, that AirBus that just crashed on the coast of BRazil 48 houras ago was less than 4 years old. Why dont you write congress a letter to make a petition for the plane not to fly more than 4 years?
Since you know so much about how old a plane has to be in order to be airworth..
TWA was one of the best airlines there ever was! As far as TWA 800 is concerned, accidents happen despite the best of intentions. The FAA/NTSB is the one that inspects and issues airworthiness certificates for each and every airliner in the sky. TWA's takeover by AA was the death knell for comfort and great customer service that used to be standard at ALL airlines. Now, we have Southworst et. al. where you're packed in like sardines & treated like cow manure.
It was perfect, except the TWA 777, that they never operated nor ever will. Otherwise very good video. Love the sync. I don't want to miss a things song.
My father was chief of flight operations for many years. I miss what TWA did for my father . Carl Icahn was a monster, he destroyed one of the worlds finest airlines. Not to mention all the wonderful people whom invested their lives in TWA. God Bless
TWA had provided services around the world not just in the USA, I was 11 year-old when I had trip by TWA from Riyadh to Egypt, Just imagine what a great company it was. It provided flights between two arabic countries with competitive prices, I wish TWA return some day, I took some pictures with TWA crew. I love uuuuuuu
Fuel wasnt the issue Carl Icahan was so crooked as on the board he opened a travelagency that stipulated he could sell tickets cheaper than twa could. Ichan has a special place to go when he leaves this earth. he deieved employees sharholders, etc just like he is about to do yahoo.
They should have bought better fuel efficent aircraft in todays crisis and better economical management. Then they probably would have survived. My opinion.
EXCELLENT video! Never got to fly them but came within inches of working for them at EWR (was interviewed and tested before AA acquisition and never heard from anyone lol. Oh well). I appreciate everyone who takes the time to use their talents to memorialize commercial aviation. Always close to my heart!
There is a little tribute in FS2004 for TWA: there is an airline called "World Travel Airlines" which means WTA, if you change the order is TWA, something like "Travel World Airlines". The white fuselage an red stripes are very similar.
TWA destryoed itself,,,AA just saved the TWA employees, and gave the retirement. TWA would have gone under anyway, so AA really saved the day for those who had vested their entire careers there.
No doubt TWA distroyed itself, but please dont tell me AA saved TWA employess. The only thing AA gave TWA was Flight benefits for thos who were about to retire. The rest got fucked in the rear end..If you want to be fair, i respect you, but let us be fair all the way..
I have FSX and FS2004, and I prefer fs2004 one because there are a lot more addons, and I have so many planes and the migration would just be so long...I have great effects and stuff in fs2004 that I can barely tell the difference between fs2004 and fsx. It's your choice.
TWA...The greatest Airline Ever! Too bad the Dumb ass greedy little f**k screwed it all up. Thanks to the flight and ground crews for many years of service. You worked for the best and it was the best because of you!
I never been on TWA, but still imagining what it would be like in A380 or new Boeing 787 for pacific or transatlantic routes... If TWA is alive still today, then it can be compared with KLM or Lufthansa. Who ruined that beautiful airline?! I wanted to ride TWA.. T.T
Howard Hughes would have been proud to see TWA continue to fly...I'm sure he would have wanted it to last longer than 2001, but Trans World will never be forgotten. Please keep up the good work. TWA...The World's Airline!
That was a custom texture done by his friend. The aircraft itself is the POSKY 747-200. The interior I don't know but someone might have done it. Maybe his friend. The texture was never released. Maybe someday it will be.
My family grew up all around TWA at MKC/KCI at the TWA Overhaul Base. Talk about bringing back old memories. It could be just like yesterday, if Icahn hadn't destroyed it. Long live TWA!!!
Ok, I'm NOT a flight-sim fan....BUT, this video was BEYOND Bitchin'!!! I hate to admit it, but watching this made me emotional. The line-up at the end with all the planes and liveries gave me chills. And the 747 in the last colors coming to a stop and turning off the lights was very fitting. I want to personally say THANK YOU!
Well kevlarkid, American Airlines bought TWA in 2001. Talk to TWALADYBUG for more info. And a little bird told me that AA hates Black&Jewish People. I mean WTF
Seriously, AA did not treat TWA's crew members well, but someone had to buy TWA eventually. Would it be better if it went out of business without being sold?
And AA is not discriminatory. They have a very diverse workforce and I noticed they treat its passengers well, regardless of race.
N750AN, i personally think that it would've been best for TWA to go out of business. them merging w/ AA instead of going out is like putting someone on a breathing machine so they can live longer but die miserably instead of taking them off a breathing machine so they can die peacefully.
Lufthansa owns Swiss too, who knows if they'll buy them out or not. And what about Air France buying KLM? for now, its the same, except KLM is doing better than it was before, but Air France might just close the doors on KLM and put AIR FRANCE on all their planes. I don't know if any of you have seen this, but I live in Chicago and when I left for France in September through Terminal 5 at O'Hare, the KLM plane was an A330, with half of Air France on it, and the other half painted in KLM colors.
To me, It's truly cold and harsh how airlines buy out each other. They promise that everything will be the same, except better salaries, etc ... AA was really a bunch of assholes to TWA - I think that even if for instance TWA had merged with AA to form a new airline, it wouldn't been the same - TWA was mostly known for its people - as in the people who worked for them. Who knows how many airlines are going to bought out next
If you think it was bad, think of what the people who worked at Pan Am and Eastern lost when those two airlines went out of business. Would you wish that fate on anyone?
Being bought out by AA was the very best deal for all involved, even if you don't think it was.
I think Continental is gone now too. Part of United.

You don't even know his name, Hector or Jafe?
Who are you joker?

R.I.P TWA.
Love the L1011 from TWA.
And nice song from Aerosmith.

Im so glad TWA is gone. .. Its to bad it didnt happen long before. Then maybe everyone who died on TWA 800 might still be here. That old plane should of never been in the air!!!!!
jeffjonesing 2 years ago
What good is that going to do if those old planes are still being used by Joe Doe's air ways, the plane can be as old as it ever gets as long as the maintenance are done proprely, If flight 800 hadnt crashed with TWA, it would have crashed with AA,CO UAL,Jet blue or whichever ailine would have bought it.
maurydez 2 years ago
What is your back ground on aviation maintenance to determ when an airplane is too old t to fly. If the plane is too old to fly, you should blame on NTSB or FAA for giving the plane the airworthness certificate. Twa maintained the plane according to FAR, Please, learn how to accuse the proper person..
maurydez 2 years ago
By the way, that AirBus that just crashed on the coast of BRazil 48 houras ago was less than 4 years old. Why dont you write congress a letter to make a petition for the plane not to fly more than 4 years?
Since you know so much about how old a plane has to be in order to be airworth..
maurydez 2 years ago
TWA was one of the best airlines there ever was! As far as TWA 800 is concerned, accidents happen despite the best of intentions. The FAA/NTSB is the one that inspects and issues airworthiness certificates for each and every airliner in the sky. TWA's takeover by AA was the death knell for comfort and great customer service that used to be standard at ALL airlines. Now, we have Southworst et. al. where you're packed in like sardines & treated like cow manure.

Thanks for sharing

Fuel wasnt the issue Carl Icahan was so crooked as on the board he opened a travelagency that stipulated he could sell tickets cheaper than twa could. Ichan has a special place to go when he leaves this earth. he deieved employees sharholders, etc just like he is about to do yahoo.

warriordriver 3 years ago
warriordriver,
Aerosim has the Tristar for TWA. It's a part of Classic Liners Vol. 2. You can get it for $35.00 as a download. It's only for FS9 aka FS2004 though.
rendezvous65 3 years ago
Actually it does work with FSX but it has a few issues. Some parts don't work well with FSX but it can be done.

AA benefited from the merge. Those JKF, LAG and Newark routs generated more bussiness to AA than what AA returned to TWA people..
So please, dont tell me AA was generous at all.
Inspite of every problem TWA had, after all it was a better deal for AA..
maurydez 3 years ago
There is a little tribute in FS2004 for TWA: there is an airline called "World Travel Airlines" which means WTA, if you change the order is TWA, something like "Travel World Airlines". The white fuselage an red stripes are very similar.
MuerteQuerida 3 years ago
In FS X World travel now has a two different schemes, neither of which is red..

TWA destryoed itself,,,AA just saved the TWA employees, and gave the retirement. TWA would have gone under anyway, so AA really saved the day for those who had vested their entire careers there.
dfwjcj 3 years ago
No doubt TWA distroyed itself, but please dont tell me AA saved TWA employess. The only thing AA gave TWA was Flight benefits for thos who were about to retire. The rest got fucked in the rear end..If you want to be fair, i respect you, but let us be fair all the way..

I have FSX and FS2004, and I prefer fs2004 one because there are a lot more addons, and I have so many planes and the migration would just be so long...I have great effects and stuff in fs2004 that I can barely tell the difference between fs2004 and fsx. It's your choice.

I never been on TWA, but still imagining what it would be like in A380 or new Boeing 787 for pacific or transatlantic routes... If TWA is alive still today, then it can be compared with KLM or Lufthansa. Who ruined that beautiful airline?! I wanted to ride TWA.. T.T

It was AA who purchased the airline and went on to ruin a once proud airline.

Well kevlarkid, American Airlines bought TWA in 2001. Talk to TWALADYBUG for more info. And a little bird told me that AA hates Black&Jewish People. I mean WTF
b747dude 4 years ago
Seriously, AA did not treat TWA's crew members well, but someone had to buy TWA eventually. Would it be better if it went out of business without being sold?
And AA is not discriminatory. They have a very diverse workforce and I noticed they treat its passengers well, regardless of race.
N750AN 4 years ago
N750AN, i personally think that it would've been best for TWA to go out of business. them merging w/ AA instead of going out is like putting someone on a breathing machine so they can live longer but die miserably instead of taking them off a breathing machine so they can die peacefully.

Lufthansa owns Swiss too, who knows if they'll buy them out or not. And what about Air France buying KLM? for now, its the same, except KLM is doing better than it was before, but Air France might just close the doors on KLM and put AIR FRANCE on all their planes. I don't know if any of you have seen this, but I live in Chicago and when I left for France in September through Terminal 5 at O'Hare, the KLM plane was an A330, with half of Air France on it, and the other half painted in KLM colors.
lahayea1000 4 years ago
They had WHAT now...?!?
MilliVanilli2007 4 years ago
To me, It's truly cold and harsh how airlines buy out each other. They promise that everything will be the same, except better salaries, etc ... AA was really a bunch of assholes to TWA - I think that even if for instance TWA had merged with AA to form a new airline, it wouldn't been the same - TWA was mostly known for its people - as in the people who worked for them. Who knows how many airlines are going to bought out next
lahayea1000 4 years ago 2
If you think it was bad, think of what the people who worked at Pan Am and Eastern lost when those two airlines went out of business. Would you wish that fate on anyone?
Being bought out by AA was the very best deal for all involved, even if you don't think it was.

The first plane ride I went on when I was 8 was on TWA.
nathanjeffrey114 4 years ago
Why did TWA go out of service? Was it due to TWA 800?
buybygb 4 years ago
No the company went in debt in december of 2001. 5 and a half years after. But no it did not have to do with flight 800
nathanjeffrey114 4 years ago
What caused the debut, i mean like Pan Am went out of service after people were too afraid due to the Pan Am 747 bomb.
buybygb 4 years ago
The company went in and out of debt over the last few years of sevice, that all I know. If you want to know the whole story, look it up.
