My guess is that it's because of the spat they had with Phil Coulter regarding the stewardship of the music. They all seem to get along internally (the reunion @ Vicar Street backs this up) but I can imagine it's both heartbreaking and rage inducing to not actually own the thing that you played that started so much.
To some of us,they were just as important as the Beatles. Then 20 years later this fantastic documentery is made, that none of us non Irish knew about until You Tube.
Lesson #1.The Irish should be proud of their fantastic musical heritage and promote it more.
Lesson #2 They did!Westlife,Boyzone,the Corrs!
We should all feel so greatful, except some of us still remember Planxty,Sweeny's Men,the Cheiftains,Van Morrison, and The Dubliners. Each and all true musicians of Erin.
This, to me is a kin to the Holy Grail, and is a joy beyond hope!
Well,..Perhaps not quite holy, but better than the Grail; and more practical too!.
Their take on folk music was both innovative and traditional, probably because of the times in which they lived,(the rock influence was there fom the start),but they were also truly wonderfull!.
I've found myself coming back into this and I can sit & start watching it again. Mighty stuff! The old clips are magic! And I was in Vicar St for THE reunion.
`Drunken Maidens` I treked around Tralee while on holiday (as a teenager) in the early 1970`s looking for that song. That was based on hearing the song on RTE while in Birmingham, England.
Brilliant documentary! Really brings back lovely memories for me as a Lad, when I first discovered Irish/Trad. Folk music in the 1970's in America. I bought all the Planxty and Bothy Band Albums I could. It was a wonderful, carefree time and this documentary brings it back. Thanks very much!-Brian
I scanned the TV listings in the papers one night about 4 years ago, the word "Planxty" jumped out at me and I found this programme about to start. Wow!

Does anyone know if that's Tommy Byrne from the Wolfe Tones at 4.57? I think that song at 6.10 could be Yarmouth Town. I'm not entirely sure.....

If you could choose your own family, Christy would be first choice as uncle.

If family could be chosen, Christy would be first choice as husband. So what if I'm a straight man?

Does anyone know why Lunny isn't in this documentary?

Donal was living in Japan at the time. The documentary maker wasn't able to get in touch with him.
