Did Chinese have high-quality coal? I haven't seen them puffing black smoke at all. I remember watching South-African steam locos and they did puff black smoke all the time and they did have low-quality coal..
@kaupunkimoukari I don't know about for the burning quality of the coal but at times it was little more than dust, see my You Tube video, China Steam Footplate 2. Drivers could earn a bonus for economical driving, an incentive to reduce smoke. Because of the extreme cold, the vast quantity of visible steam will mask some of the smoke. Now if you want black smoke, what about Cuba....
why aint these in use ehre? tehy contaminate less than the elctric one, as the energy taht it uses to move its produced by oil and gas, while locomotives like this dont produce any, or at least not much CO2, its much healthier and better looking than the stupid squared ugly electric ones, heck, its even better than diesels,
also they oculd use steam locomotivces feeded by wood, only for passenger trains, as they dont have as much power as a coal one
@blackthorne57 When did you take this video? The place you captured the steam locomotive is my hometown and my grandma is still in Jingpeng now. Perfect video!! BTW when I come back I'm always recognized as Japanese by local people...
Thanks for the comment but do not worry too much about the envioronmrnt, the vast majority of what is coming out of the chimney is exhoust steam. Because of the very low temperature, about minus 15 degrees C, it instantly condenses to a white cloud.

I wasn't expecting a horn! Tells you how much I know about Chinese steam.
drosera88 2 weeks ago
@drosera88 Chinese steam locomotives had both steam whistles and air horns. There did not appear to be any set pattern as to their use.

@blackthorne57 That's kinda simplistic, ignoring all the byproducts of coal combustion, and heavy metals etc., that get mixed in with the steam.
