@funnyhorsey good job. as a matter of record, the aqha does support horse slaughter. it is a cheap dumping ground for irresponsible breeders and owners. if you check into 'americans against horse slaughter' online you'll find a list of outfits that are pro-slaughter. as for your horse; q.h. are a direct line from t.b. and there's bound to be some paints thrown in the family somewhere!! love your horsey no matter the color!!!
@funnyhorsey true. that's why i won't bother to register my paint filly. she's far too precious to me than anything she would win at paint racing. i just love her like my own daughter. she's got Big Red in her pedigree too, but i'm not worried about being in a club. apha supports slaughter. heck with them.
@funnyhorsey wish today's breeders would pull their heads out of their !@$#@! and would produce more rugged horses like this. alot of their motives are creating the breakdowns of young horses and the perpetuating of conformation flaws. rascals. shameful !@#$@!@#@!
i never noticed even after many views, , but big red licked the young man's palm. only one of my horses does that, my red and white paint filly;;;red's greatest grand daughter!! how cute!!. she's mellow like most paints, but she can blow her stack too-typical red.
heard a whisper that's been passed down almost a hundred years that Big Red did a work ;;;;1.34!!!! shout it from the mountain tops people!!!!!!!! God is sooooo Good!!!!!!
face it people with all the friendly rivalries, nobody will ever really know Man o' War's top speed. he was always under wraps. everyone knows horses have so much more inside that isn't even tapped when they're ridden!!!! consider their speeds when they're acting naturally without a rider!! interacting with each other and wild animals too.
That's not an excuse!I I couldn't care less about Secretariat's losses as a 2 yr old. Kelso had reasons for his losses. He also spotted a lot of weight quite a few times. Check out Concha:best thoroughbred of all time. See what Cot Campbell has to say. I prefer his opinion to yours. I believe you were attacking Kelso.
@cf1934 What does it matter what Lauren said before the Woodward?! The fact is he showed bad judgement in running his horse at that race, when he was preparing for a different one, on a different surface a week later. People make mistakes, and Lauren certainly made one here. But even without his usual preparation (one of those legendary workouts) before a major race, he still clocked 2:26 and change in that 1 1/2 mile race on the slop, and it took a horse running out of his skin to beat him...
@cf1934 Lauren must have thought Secretariat actually WAS a machine when he decided to run him! He must have been thinking the same way before the Whitney. Horses, in fact, are not machines (even ones that set crazy fractions, like Sec's 1 1/2 mile Belmont), but when this colt was in form he was unmatched on the track. You say "Kelso had reasons for his losses", though you ignore Secretariat's legitimate "reasons"?! Think a little before you write.
Who keeps flagging this as spam? A little insecurity among Sec fans maybe?
Man o War vs. the best of the best: He ran faster than Count Fleet (Bloodhorse #5) at 1 mile, 1 3/16 and 1 1/4; > than Citation (BH #3) at 1 mile, 1 1/16, & 1 3/16, > Kelso (BH #4) at 1 1/4 + same time at 1 5/8 with MOW restrained at end; > than Seattle Slew (BH #9) at 1 1/2, The Bid (BH #10) at 1 1/4, and Secretariat (BH #2) at 1 5/8ths.
@evyn10014 Kelso could have broke the mile and five eighths record also. MAN O WAR could have been the best. He was definitely better than Secretariat.
@cf1934 Sorry to burst your bubble here, but Secretariat was definitely better than MOW. The latter ran mainly against allowance-level horses, and his times even when carrying less weight than Secretariat - at 1 and 1 1/2 miles - were slower (multiple lengths slower). He had to fight against Grier, but his 1 1/8 was still 4 secs slower than Secretariat's time (equal weight). And the EASE with which the Bold Ruler colt blasted by opposition (Preakness, Hopeful) - wow! Both are legends though.
@BigPetrov The tracks were slower back then! MOW set a world record at a mile and five eighths which was equalled by Kelso. What you are saying just doesn't "PROVE OUT" to me. Kelso was a better horse!
@cf1934 Hahaha!! Nice one! But you failed to mention that MOW raced against an average of 1.5 horses as a 3 yr old. WOW - the strategy involved there must have been immense (LOL!). Sec had to maneuver through large fields of horses with supreme versatility (from the inside, giving up huge ground on the outside, on the lead, from far back), to clock his faster times. And there is not proof all the tracks were "slower" back then. In fact, Belmont was rated as one of the fastest in the '20s.
@cf1934 How was Kelso "a better horse"? Because he raced for more years than Secretariat? Of course he had to - no nuts couldn't breed. He lost in some 24 races (man, what a record!), and his times were slower, including the 1 5/8 which Sec clocked (2:37 4/5 pulling up - huge!) past the wire at Belmont. Kelso couldn't pull off a stunt like that in its dreams. Sec's official 1 5/8 one was set on deep, wet Canadian grass in frigid weather - kind of like the grass you would find in the UK...
@BigPetrov Kelso won 7 out of 8 races as a 3 yr old. He was boxed in the race he lost. Secretariat lost 5 times in 21 starts. What's so great about that?
@cf1934 I see some still talk of Sec losses at 2YO. If you actually watched video, and did research, you would not even mention it. Funny how you tend to play both sides, at times. Further, Kelso, at 3YO won 8 of 9 but was not entered in any of the classics. Kelso's overall winning % is around 62% But...you wont "hear" me say..."what's so great about that" as that is a bullshit statement made from people like you who cant even get their facts straight.
@bbmtge He didn't run till the triple crown was over! He won the JCGC on a sloppy track for 2 miles in world record time as a three year old. The 1959 horse of the year Bald Eagle ran a distant third. He was still horse of the year as a 3yr old. He holds the three fastest times for 2 miles. Prove Out holds the 4th. Why didn't Secretariat's people go after Prove Out in the JCGC? I would have!
@cf1934 I am aware he did not run until the TC was over. How is it that you provide excuses for Kelso, who needs none, and attack Sec??? Your comments are duplicitous and childish. Do you possess the ability to make a statement as an adult. Let's review
1) Tell me about Sec losses at 2YO
2) What is Kelso's career winning %???
Let's see if we can get responses to your previous comments, instead of running around in a circle making blabber.
@cf1934 check out the times at races like the Epsom Derby. On dirt, Sec could give no balls a head start at this distance and still finish him off. Kelso won 5 HOYs because he kept racing and racing, and occasionally losing. The fact is, in the two years that Sec raced, he won two HOYs and FIVE ECLIPSE AWARDS (how many did Kelso get?). Your "PROVE OUT" bit had me rolling on the floor! Well done!! But look what Sec did in his next race a week later, for which he was actually preparing.
@BigPetrov Kelso set a world record on dirt for 2 miles.Eleven days later an american track record on grass as an over the hill 7 year old. I wonder which one he was preparing for. Try googling si vault this man is dangerous.Whitney Tower said that Laurin proclaimed that Secretariat was set to run the race of his life in the Woodward. Secretariat fans don't like to face facts! .
@cf1934 First of all DRF 45 yr. veteran said the tracks of 1973 were perhaps 1 second faster. He seen both horses. He said Secretrariat faster, Secretariat better than MOW. You talk about Kelso thinking he was better than Secretariat. Well thats your opinion but I will go with Eddie Arcaro opinion the man that rode Kelso. He rated Secretariat the best he ever seen and the fastest.
@rscarbro100 hahahahahaaaahhaha! i'm a woman. my little gal is a 16mo. old paint filly. she's red and mostly white with blue eyes. i call her HeavenlyHolly becaue she just is to me! i'll never race her. i'm ashamed of some of the industry's cruel practices. some of her little ways remind me of Man o' War. cute little sassy redhead.
All official DRF times, comparing the horses as 3 year olds.
The greatest. A legend that will never be equaled. Love that horse.
Hey he proved his value in the stud barn. Today stallions are bred 100's of times per season. He wasn't and look how many of todays racers have him in their pedigree.
No Seattle Slew, No Affirmed, No Alydar, No Danzig, No Mr. Prospector, without MOW
And he was a OLD horse when he sired a Triple crown winner.
@fairplay1951 well, well people i just have to brag about the baby God gave me!! she's related to both big Red's through fairplay!! it'snt life grand!!! shezalongtallsally. but i call her Heavenlyholly because she really is. my beautifle holly-girl i say to her every morning. what a gift!!! she'll never know a bit or a whip. and as the black girls usta say "oooh! ...aint she faaaaast!!" God is sooo Good!!!!!
@sczen -- also--i was told the timings by the track "supers" at churchill-belmont-and pimlico-- learned of MAN O' WAR'S stature by a very close source--knowledgeable--to the connections!!~
@sarahlvnfenn08 i love both these racers everyone is arg - geeing about (pronounced like it's spelled), and i'm not trying to beat anyone, just happy my 15mo. old paint filly is a great grandbaby of the original Big Red. God likes me!!!! i traced through her mammy's line. couldn't afford to get into the racing game. i wouldn't risk her beautiful self anyway. she's my baby girl. likes to rear like grandpa too and doesn't like being bossed. at 4 mo. she tried to bully the grown horses!!littlered
MOW broke all but one of his record under restrain. Just amazing!! He truly was the greatest of them all. Look how he beat Sir Barton. His jockey has his head pulled in so tight to slow him down and he still broke a track record!!
Secretariat was an amazing horse, but I think MOW would beat him. Remember the tracks were slower, the shoes were heavier..... in the years between the two many advances were made in racing. MOW is the greatest ever.
Zenyattam ran a 1 1/16 mile race with each quarter ran faster than the last. Thats 4 quarters. Secretariat ran 5 quarters. If Zenyatta ran the extra quarter she would had to run the last one in less than 22 3/5 to break Secretariat record. On the pace she was going .06 she would have ran the last quarter in 24 seconds. Secretariat last quarter was 23 flat.
BTW, great footage of Man O' War. He was my favorite horse since I was 5 years old. He was physically magnificent. And then the greatest thing to happen to man came along...the great Secretariat. I still love MOW. He's my 2nd favorite horse. Secretariat, to me, is beyond description. He wasn't a horse. He was a miracle. However, I still think that physically, only Man O' War was Secretariat's rival. Secretariat's 22 pound engine would have outraced MOW.
That's okay, I mean its not that important, err... I'll find a way to look it up. I shouldn't stress you out or anything over it. Sorry if I did. Still, I love the song!
Secretariat may have been a good racer but Man O'War was able to pass on his quality traits to his foals. How many triple crown winners can be linked back to Man O'War and how many can be linked back to Secretariat? Man O'War was "the mossest hoss that ever was"!
@rogueflame38 since Big Red was the mostest hoss, then my baby girl, HeavenlyHolly, is the hostess with the mostest!!!! yeeeaaahhhhh!!!! she knows what's what! at 12mo. of age she horns in when i'm tacking the geldings and isn't happy till i hang a bareback pad on her. then i hang a headstall that's too big and she grabs the rope in her mouth. she wants to grow up right now!!! my beautiful Holly-gurrrl, she's the best in the west. i swear she's so much like him it's scary.
@cornellbigred15 don't try to downplay the miracle of our horses with Big Red's blood. why try to hurt feelings. we love them and you should be happy for us.
Secretariat won't be duplicated. Every scientific special about race horses showed WHY Secretariat was the only "perfect" race horse recorded. His "locomotive" and "symmetrical" gait (which no other race horse matched )or his being able to increase his speed during a race (due to his enlarged heart). Even scientists were marveled by his uniqueness...and yes, they also reviewed tapes of ALL the race horses..including Man O' War.I'm a HUGE fan for a reason:)
Well, there's not much racing footage of Man O' War that they can use for study, and of course, in Man O' War's time, motion picture cameras could not shoot enough frames per second to accurately duplicate real-life motion, which of course gave it that slightly jerky quality.
Sorry, but science isn't the end-all be-all of everything. A horse can be a virtual machine, but does he have heart? Both Big Red's did, plus good confirmation. John Henry won solely on heart. It's all he had.
@cmf4321 just read of a racer in the long past, can't remember his name but he had a physical deformity and still was on top of the competition. i think his head was somewhat deformed with one eye set funny so when he ran he led his head tilted. so it's not just physical perfection that determines ability. it really is the "heart" the soul inside!!! then there's perfect specimens that can't run at all!!
@greatbigbubby I agree! Humans are the most perfect example of not using their ability, talents or potential...regardless of what they have as an advantage over others. It's what's inside. That's why I think Secretariat is the greatest creature that ever lived on Earth. He had it ALL. We'll never see his perfect "10" again.
Secretariat is my idol & hero. I watch him on youtube everyday. He's the only God-like perfection I've ever witnessed. His life is an inspiration to all of us.
@cmf4321 i understand your admiration for secretariat, but realize nothing is God-like. God made everything-all his wonderful creation. He blessed our country with the Perfect horse!!!
All racehorses are built for power and speed. I love that you guys are passionate about your favorite horses, but it's important that you expand your knowledge about the sport. I think it's difficult to truly appreciate just what was special about your favorite horses when you haven't given other horses their due. How much do you really know about Kelso, Forego, Citation, Sysonby, Colin, John Henry, etc.? These horses are also legends and with good reason.
There are alot of great race horses in history. But it's different when you can set records that make you a legend. There was only one Mark Spitz...until Michael Phelps. Who's topped Secretariat in his world records? Unfortunately, Secretariat was retired too soon...He was only 2 or 3 when he stopped racing:-( We'll never know what other records he would have broken..
Racing starts for horses at 2 years of age, if they are ready. Botm "Big Reds" started at two and retired at the end of their 3 year old season. It was said of them both "what else could they have done, had they been allowed to race longer?
Their situation is very common today - early retirement. These horses are bred for their potential stud fee instead of for the improvement of the breed, or for the good of the sport.
As for Secretariat's records, only time will tell.
@victorcornet21 just saw video of greedy breeders racing youngster that were not ready just to impress buyers. and had the misfortune of witnessing a colt trying so hard faithfully and dropping dead on the track with a heart attck. then a filly sustaining a compound fracture of her front cannon bone-it sounded like a rifle shot and she ran along on the broken stump-simply disgusting and cruel- the under tack shows. criminal cruelty. so yeah, those evil s.o.b.'s do run them before they should.
@cmf4321 Many horses have set records and many have run faster than Secretariat.
Who's topped Sec in his world records? I suggest you look at the record books. He holds ONE record on DIRT for the Belmont, and it's not the WR. The World Record is by Hawkster at Santa Anita Park, 2:22 4/5. Sec's was 2:24.
And you said he stopped racing at 2 or 3? He started racing at 2 like all TB's and stopped at the end of his 3 year old season.
I also think that Man O' War and Secretariat were the only 2 race horses in history that were built for power and speed. All you have to do is compare their photos to other horses.
Yes. Giving his competition a little credit though, he was never pushed. Hoodwink was entered into the race, by Sam Riddle's niece - to take the second place purse - so that the race would still go on. The crowds wanted to see him. No one wanted to send their horses up against him after a point. What was so phenomenal about Man O' War was his domination of the sport. Not even Secretariat's racing career was threatened by running out of horses to race. Sort of an unusual dilemma, huh?
I love this horse! Only Secretariat was his match. Although Secretariat would have the race of his life, he would have won. He had longer strides and was the only horse recorded in history that had the perfect running gait. He also is the only horse that could increase his speed throughout a race. Man O' War would have taken the lead in the beginning, but in the end we would have seen the race of a lifetime with Secretariat beating him at the end. 2 greatest horses of all time...and still are.
Man O'War and Secretariat's strides where found to be equal. The announcer calling Secretariat's race even said that. There are alot of things about Secretariat and Man O'War that are similar...makes you almost think MOW came back for an encore as Secretariat.
I love your attitude:-) Several years ago, I watched a fascinating special on race horses. Scientists viewed them running in slow motion looking for the "perfect locomotive gait" and drew a diagram to simulate it...Secretariat was the ONLY horse that was in perfect alignment. No other came close. He was also the only horse in recorded history to increase his speed (due to his enlarged heart). I'm a HUGE fan of MOW...& yes...they're VERY similar & still my two favorites! Especially Secretariat:-)
@greatbigbubby I definitely favor one...Secretariat. He is my IDOL. I think he is the greatest creature that ever lived. He was the perfect "10". We'll never see any human, horse, etc. again that had it ALL. He is the only horse that was considered the "perfect" race horse physically. He was beautiful beyond words, powerfully built, the largest engine (heart) ever recorded & natural confidence that humans will never know. And what he did in the TC has NEVER been matched by any horse in history.
@greatbigbubby i see my 3 horses as my own children, so that's why i can't love one more than the other. just a hopeless mama, that's me. the fact you favor secretariat tells me you're probably from this newer genration. really , there's been many phenomenal horses that have not had their stories even told on the big screen. and i see secretariat as phenomenal.
There are people out there who would say Citation had them both beat. Out of all the racing footage I've seen, I've never seen a faster mover than Kelso, who was a grandson of Man O' War. Another great horse - he was astoundingly versatile.
My personal feeling is that Man O' War is the best America ever bred. A little more of his influence in breeding might make people stop talking about making the Triple Crown easier to win. If they make those changes, what would winning it mean?
ONLY Secretariat still holds race track records 35 years after he set them. Citation ran the same races and doesn't hold any records for the Triple Crown. I still think Man O' War is the only horse that was in Secretariat's league. Secretariat won 2 of those races FROM LAST POSITION and the 3rd race BY 31 LENGTHS & no one's beat his record yet!!! And absolutely no horse or human, (except Secretariat) has ever been clocked as INCREASING their speed during races..he defied nature. He's a legend:-)
@victorcornet21 Yes, and people don't realize that his time at 1 5/8th was faster than Secretariat ran 1 5/8th. I think MOW is the greatest ever... Kelso and Dr. Fager, both underrated as well.
@evyn10014 Easy there with the MOW garbage stupid hag. Sec ran his 1 5/8 on grass and was shut down before the wire. If it was Ronnie instead of Eddie in the saddle, he would have ran him right through, and THAT would have been a time. Was MOW as versatile on the track? Sec won from the inside, giving up huge ground on the outside, on the lead, from far back, in between horses. He showed his 3 losses at 3 were flukes by destroying the field and setting a track, or world record after each loss.
@rcschumann You shouldn't get so defensive Mr. Schumann. I never said Secretariat wasn't great. I think he and MOW were the best.
But I'm not citing hearsay, I'm citing facts. Turf is faster than dirt and Sec ran his 1 5/8 on turf while MOW's was on dirt. Yes Sec was eased off, but so was MOW -- read the DRF.
This is an important race because it was the one race MOW was really allowed to run.
My point being, they were very close in times if MOW allowed to run.
@evyn10014 You also haven't put another important fact up here about that 1 5/8 mile distance. Secretariat was running against a field of multiple horses, his strategy being to stalk Kennedy Road. MOW ran a match race . Interesting that you don't want to include Secretariat's Belmont where he did 2:37 and change pulling up over the last 1/8 of a mile on dirt. If Maple had taken him straight to the lead the way Turcotte did at Belmont it's another sub 2:40 1 5/8.
@evyn10014 Kelso equaled MOW Mile and 5 eighths in the some race mow set it. Kelso also holds the World record on dirt for 2 miles. In fact, he holds the 3 fastest times ever run on dirt for 2 miles. Prove ran the 4th fastest time for 2 miles
@rcschumann Secretariat's loss against Prove Out wasn't a fluke. He just had a bad day and got beat by a good horse that was better on that day. The others he might have been sick -- but if that's the case his trainer shouldn't have had him run. You know this is a fact. If you take the field, you're "healthy." It's the "rule" in all sports.
And if Sec was sick it would have shown in his workouts -- so Lucien shouldn't have let him run.
@evyn10014 When he lost at Wood Memorial because of a painful abscess, he killed the field at Derby setting a still-standing record. When he lost at Whitney because of illness, he killed a field of SIX champion older horses and Onion at Marlboro, setting a world record for 1 1/8, and galloping out a 1 1/4 equal to Bid's WR!! He lost at Woodward after he subbed at the last minute for Riva Ridge, while preparing for the MOW on turf - yes, he then killed the field at MOW setting a track record.
@rcschumann It's well documented that Lucien knew about Sec's abscess BEFORE the race but decided to run him anyway. That's the trainer's fault, not the horse. However, Sham also had two teeth ripped out in an accident at the gate in the Kentucky Derby, and still managed to run his ass off.
@evyn10014 How many horses have won races in the manner that Secretariat did? Did MOW ever make a move like Sec's "suicide move" (Andy Beyer) at Preakness on the 1st turn, passing horses like they were standind still? Did he ever win a race by posting faster and faster 1/4 fractions all through the race, like Sec did at Belmont, in a long race in blisteting hot weather? Or blast through between horses at the Sanford? No horse has ever shown such know-how on the track. That's what sets him apart.
@rcschumann You do the great horses that have raced a disservice. Many have made amazing moves and cut through traffic. Too many to even name. And yes other horses have run negative splits, namely Zenyatta in 2008.
And how would you or anyone else know if "any other horse" has shown that kind of know-how on the track. You don't. You have no idea. No one does. There have been a lot of brilliant horses. Period.
@evyn10014 I apologize for calling you "stupid hag" - I got carried away. By the way, Hawkster's 1 1/2 was set on grass - you must know that each track is different in terms of conditions and speed, and the fact that Sec's time at Belmont still EASILY stands after 38 yrs shows what kind of run it was. Hawkster's 1 1/2 was broken by Horlicks at Japan Cup on turf in the same year, which shows that tracks heavily influence times. Check this race out on Wiki and you'll see unknowns going sub 2:24.
About Secretariat increasing his speed during a race: Wikipedia's entry on Zenyatta says that she did this in 2008's Lady's Secret Stakes. Each fraction faster than the other. Have you heard about this?
However, Secretariat was setting track records THROUGHOUT the entire race. In simple words, he was BREAKING records at each quarter mile WHILE speeding up. Zenyatta never did that. Zenyatta can't be compared to Secretariat. What Secretariat did defied the laws of nature. That's why Secretariat will always be known as "supernatural" and the "miracle horse". He can't be duplicated. Secretariat still holds records 36 YEARS LATER. Every horse is chasing his shadow...it will never happen again.
@cmf4321 Man o' War set two world records one stood for over 30 years the for over 40 years on tracks that were slower that the ones Secretariat ran on!!
And how about the Preakness & Belmont...Man O' War raced in both. Secretariat broke all three Triple Crown records. And still standing. It's now going on 37 years. I think that MOW was great but Secretariat was the true miracle of nature. As a horse, MOW was magnificent. I just think that Secretariat's "perfection" physically, genetically, personality & speed will never be seen again. No man or horse comes close to the greatness of Secretariat. That's why he is still the most watched on youtube.
@cmf4321 Kelso still holds the World Record on dirt for 2miles! He holds the 3 fastest times for 2 miles on the dirt. Prove Out holds the 4th fastest time.Kelso ran the mile and one half on grass in 2:23 &4fifths. Secretariat did it in 2:24. Secretariat went around 2 turns. Kelso went around 3 turns.
Man O' War's stride length, according to the KY Horse Park, and numerous other sources, was 28 feet. Secretariat's was 24, and little John Henry's was 25 1/2 feet long.
man o' war is my horses great grandpa on his dads side of the family and on his moms side his grandpa is Northern Dancer.Sadly he does not race cause he is not fast enough but when i look at pictures of Man o' War all i see is my horse Courage and Man o' War was such an amazing animal to me it just makes me cry.
Love the music= it adds a lot. Beautiful sleek, shiny, majestic Man o War! Goosebumps up and down my spine! Thanks.

face it people with all the friendly rivalries, nobody will ever really know Man o' War's top speed. he was always under wraps. everyone knows horses have so much more inside that isn't even tapped when they're ridden!!!! consider their speeds when they're acting naturally without a rider!! interacting with each other and wild animals too.

I believe you were attacking Kelso.
cf1934 7 months ago
@cf1934 What does it matter what Lauren said before the Woodward?! The fact is he showed bad judgement in running his horse at that race, when he was preparing for a different one, on a different surface a week later. People make mistakes, and Lauren certainly made one here. But even without his usual preparation (one of those legendary workouts) before a major race, he still clocked 2:26 and change in that 1 1/2 mile race on the slop, and it took a horse running out of his skin to beat him...
BigPetrov 7 months ago
@cf1934 Lauren must have thought Secretariat actually WAS a machine when he decided to run him! He must have been thinking the same way before the Whitney. Horses, in fact, are not machines (even ones that set crazy fractions, like Sec's 1 1/2 mile Belmont), but when this colt was in form he was unmatched on the track. You say "Kelso had reasons for his losses", though you ignore Secretariat's legitimate "reasons"?! Think a little before you write.
BigPetrov 7 months ago
@BigPetrov You should do the thinking with your brain instead of your heart.

Official DRF times, comparing as 3 year olds.
The greatest.
evyn10014 9 months ago
@evyn10014 Kelso could have broke the mile and five eighths record also. MAN O WAR could have been the best. He was definitely better than Secretariat.
cf1934 7 months ago
@cf1934 Agreed. Even rated at 4 or 5 doesn't give Kelso his due in my book... He ran amazing times at every distance. I'm a huge fan.
evyn10014 7 months ago
@cf1934 Sorry to burst your bubble here, but Secretariat was definitely better than MOW. The latter ran mainly against allowance-level horses, and his times even when carrying less weight than Secretariat - at 1 and 1 1/2 miles - were slower (multiple lengths slower). He had to fight against Grier, but his 1 1/8 was still 4 secs slower than Secretariat's time (equal weight). And the EASE with which the Bold Ruler colt blasted by opposition (Preakness, Hopeful) - wow! Both are legends though.
BigPetrov 7 months ago
@BigPetrov The tracks were slower back then! MOW set a world record at a mile and five eighths which was equalled by Kelso. What you are saying just doesn't "PROVE OUT" to me. Kelso was a better horse!
cf1934 7 months ago
@cf1934 Hahaha!! Nice one! But you failed to mention that MOW raced against an average of 1.5 horses as a 3 yr old. WOW - the strategy involved there must have been immense (LOL!). Sec had to maneuver through large fields of horses with supreme versatility (from the inside, giving up huge ground on the outside, on the lead, from far back), to clock his faster times. And there is not proof all the tracks were "slower" back then. In fact, Belmont was rated as one of the fastest in the '20s.
BigPetrov 7 months ago
@cf1934 How was Kelso "a better horse"? Because he raced for more years than Secretariat? Of course he had to - no nuts couldn't breed. He lost in some 24 races (man, what a record!), and his times were slower, including the 1 5/8 which Sec clocked (2:37 4/5 pulling up - huge!) past the wire at Belmont. Kelso couldn't pull off a stunt like that in its dreams. Sec's official 1 5/8 one was set on deep, wet Canadian grass in frigid weather - kind of like the grass you would find in the UK...
BigPetrov 7 months ago
@BigPetrov Kelso won 7 out of 8 races as a 3 yr old. He was boxed in the race he lost. Secretariat lost 5 times in 21 starts. What's so great about that?
cf1934 7 months ago
@cf1934 I see some still talk of Sec losses at 2YO. If you actually watched video, and did research, you would not even mention it. Funny how you tend to play both sides, at times. Further, Kelso, at 3YO won 8 of 9 but was not entered in any of the classics. Kelso's overall winning % is around 62% But...you wont "hear" me say..."what's so great about that" as that is a bullshit statement made from people like you who cant even get their facts straight.
bbmtge 7 months ago
@bbmtge He didn't run till the triple crown was over! He won the JCGC on a sloppy track for 2 miles in world record time as a three year old. The 1959 horse of the year Bald Eagle ran a distant third. He was still horse of the year as a 3yr old. He holds the three fastest times for 2 miles. Prove Out holds the 4th. Why didn't Secretariat's people go after Prove Out in the JCGC? I would have!
cf1934 7 months ago
@cf1934 I am aware he did not run until the TC was over. How is it that you provide excuses for Kelso, who needs none, and attack Sec??? Your comments are duplicitous and childish. Do you possess the ability to make a statement as an adult. Let's review
1) Tell me about Sec losses at 2YO
2) What is Kelso's career winning %???
Let's see if we can get responses to your previous comments, instead of running around in a circle making blabber.
bbmtge 7 months ago
@cf1934 check out the times at races like the Epsom Derby. On dirt, Sec could give no balls a head start at this distance and still finish him off. Kelso won 5 HOYs because he kept racing and racing, and occasionally losing. The fact is, in the two years that Sec raced, he won two HOYs and FIVE ECLIPSE AWARDS (how many did Kelso get?). Your "PROVE OUT" bit had me rolling on the floor! Well done!! But look what Sec did in his next race a week later, for which he was actually preparing.
BigPetrov 7 months ago
@BigPetrov Kelso set a world record on dirt for 2 miles.Eleven days later an american track record on grass as an over the hill 7 year old. I wonder which one he was preparing for.

Secretariat may have been a good racer but Man O'War was able to pass on his quality traits to his foals. How many triple crown winners can be linked back to Man O'War and how many can be linked back to Secretariat? Man O'War was "the mossest hoss that ever was"!

cmf4321 3 years ago
Secretariat won't be duplicated. Every scientific special about race horses showed WHY Secretariat was the only "perfect" race horse recorded. His "locomotive" and "symmetrical" gait (which no other race horse matched )or his being able to increase his speed during a race (due to his enlarged heart). Even scientists were marveled by his uniqueness...and yes, they also reviewed tapes of ALL the race horses..including Man O' War.I'm a HUGE fan for a reason:)
cmf4321 3 years ago
Well, there's not much racing footage of Man O' War that they can use for study, and of course, in Man O' War's time, motion picture cameras could not shoot enough frames per second to accurately duplicate real-life motion, which of course gave it that slightly jerky quality.
Sorry, but science isn't the end-all be-all of everything. A horse can be a virtual machine, but does he have heart? Both Big Red's did, plus good confirmation. John Henry won solely on heart. It's all he had.
victorcornet21 3 years ago
@cmf4321 H e met older horses 3 times and was beaten twice by them. Prove out dominated him.
cf1934 7 months ago
@cmf4321 just read of a racer in the long past, can't remember his name but he had a physical deformity and still was on top of the competition. i think his head was somewhat deformed with one eye set funny so when he ran he led his head tilted. so it's not just physical perfection that determines ability. it really is the "heart" the soul inside!!! then there's perfect specimens that can't run at all!!
greatbigbubby 6 months ago
@greatbigbubby I agree! Humans are the most perfect example of not using their ability, talents or potential...regardless of what they have as an advantage over others. It's what's inside. That's why I think Secretariat is the greatest creature that ever lived on Earth. He had it ALL. We'll never see his perfect "10" again.
Secretariat is my idol & hero. I watch him on youtube everyday. He's the only God-like perfection I've ever witnessed. His life is an inspiration to all of us.
cmf4321 6 months ago
@cmf4321 i understand your admiration for secretariat, but realize nothing is God-like. God made everything-all his wonderful creation. He blessed our country with the Perfect horse!!!
greatbigbubby 5 months ago
All racehorses are built for power and speed. I love that you guys are passionate about your favorite horses, but it's important that you expand your knowledge about the sport. I think it's difficult to truly appreciate just what was special about your favorite horses when you haven't given other horses their due. How much do you really know about Kelso, Forego, Citation, Sysonby, Colin, John Henry, etc.? These horses are also legends and with good reason.
victorcornet21 3 years ago
There are alot of great race horses in history. But it's different when you can set records that make you a legend. There was only one Mark Spitz...until Michael Phelps. Who's topped Secretariat in his world records? Unfortunately, Secretariat was retired too soon...He was only 2 or 3 when he stopped racing:-( We'll never know what other records he would have broken..
cmf4321 3 years ago
Racing starts for horses at 2 years of age, if they are ready. Botm "Big Reds" started at two and retired at the end of their 3 year old season. It was said of them both "what else could they have done, had they been allowed to race longer?
Their situation is very common today - early retirement. These horses are bred for their potential stud fee instead of for the improvement of the breed, or for the good of the sport.
As for Secretariat's records, only time will tell.
victorcornet21 3 years ago
@victorcornet21 just saw video of greedy breeders racing youngster that were not ready just to impress buyers. and had the misfortune of witnessing a colt trying so hard faithfully and dropping dead on the track with a heart attck. then a filly sustaining a compound fracture of her front cannon bone-it sounded like a rifle shot and she ran along on the broken stump-simply disgusting and cruel- the under tack shows. criminal cruelty. so yeah, those evil s.o.b.'s do run them before they should.
greatbigbubby 5 months ago
@cmf4321 Many horses have set records and many have run faster than Secretariat.
Who's topped Sec in his world records? I suggest you look at the record books. He holds ONE record on DIRT for the Belmont, and it's not the WR. The World Record is by Hawkster at Santa Anita Park, 2:22 4/5. Sec's was 2:24.
And you said he stopped racing at 2 or 3? He started racing at 2 like all TB's and stopped at the end of his 3 year old season.
Know a little more about racing.
evyn10014 10 months ago
@victorcornet21 those names ring a bell in the misty past. i remember reading their bios as a youngster too. there's lots of wonderful champs.
greatbigbubby 6 months ago
I also think that Man O' War and Secretariat were the only 2 race horses in history that were built for power and speed. All you have to do is compare their photos to other horses.
cmf4321 3 years ago
Did he really win a race by 100 lengths?
latinostallion94 3 years ago
Sort of an unusual dilemma, huh?
victorcornet21 3 years ago
@latinostallion94 damn-straight he did!!!
greatbigbubby 6 months ago
I love this horse! Only Secretariat was his match. Although Secretariat would have the race of his life, he would have won. He had longer strides and was the only horse recorded in history that had the perfect running gait. He also is the only horse that could increase his speed throughout a race. Man O' War would have taken the lead in the beginning, but in the end we would have seen the race of a lifetime with Secretariat beating him at the end. 2 greatest horses of all time...and still are.
cmf4321 3 years ago
BTW, thanks for posting!! Love the music from Rudy as a backdrop for this video!
cmf4321 3 years ago
Man O'War and Secretariat's strides where found to be equal. The announcer calling Secretariat's race even said that. There are alot of things about Secretariat and Man O'War that are similar...makes you almost think MOW came back for an encore as Secretariat.
Szheherazad 3 years ago
I love your attitude:-) Several years ago, I watched a fascinating special on race horses. Scientists viewed them running in slow motion looking for the "perfect locomotive gait" and drew a diagram to simulate it...Secretariat was the ONLY horse that was in perfect alignment. No other came close. He was also the only horse in recorded history to increase his speed (due to his enlarged heart). I'm a HUGE fan of MOW...& yes...they're VERY similar & still my two favorites! Especially Secretariat:-)
cmf4321 3 years ago
@cmf4321 they were descended from the same sire line, so it's like comparing brothers. you love them both and can't favor one.
greatbigbubby 5 months ago
@greatbigbubby I definitely favor one...Secretariat. He is my IDOL. I think he is the greatest creature that ever lived. He was the perfect "10". We'll never see any human, horse, etc. again that had it ALL. He is the only horse that was considered the "perfect" race horse physically. He was beautiful beyond words, powerfully built, the largest engine (heart) ever recorded & natural confidence that humans will never know. And what he did in the TC has NEVER been matched by any horse in history.
cmf4321 5 months ago
@greatbigbubby i see my 3 horses as my own children, so that's why i can't love one more than the other. just a hopeless mama, that's me. the fact you favor secretariat tells me you're probably from this newer genration. really , there's been many phenomenal horses that have not had their stories even told on the big screen. and i see secretariat as phenomenal.
greatbigbubby 5 months ago
There are people out there who would say Citation had them both beat. Out of all the racing footage I've seen, I've never seen a faster mover than Kelso, who was a grandson of Man O' War. Another great horse - he was astoundingly versatile.
My personal feeling is that Man O' War is the best America ever bred. A little more of his influence in breeding might make people stop talking about making the Triple Crown easier to win. If they make those changes, what would winning it mean?
victorcornet21 3 years ago
ONLY Secretariat still holds race track records 35 years after he set them. Citation ran the same races and doesn't hold any records for the Triple Crown. I still think Man O' War is the only horse that was in Secretariat's league. Secretariat won 2 of those races FROM LAST POSITION and the 3rd race BY 31 LENGTHS & no one's beat his record yet!!! And absolutely no horse or human, (except Secretariat) has ever been clocked as INCREASING their speed during races..he defied nature. He's a legend:-)
cmf4321 3 years ago
It was 40 years before Man O' War's record set in the Lawrence Realization Handicap was broken, courtesy of Kelso.
victorcornet21 3 years ago
@victorcornet21 Yes, and people don't realize that his time at 1 5/8th was faster than Secretariat ran 1 5/8th. I think MOW is the greatest ever... Kelso and Dr. Fager, both underrated as well.
evyn10014 9 months ago
@evyn10014 Easy there with the MOW garbage stupid hag. Sec ran his 1 5/8 on grass and was shut down before the wire. If it was Ronnie instead of Eddie in the saddle, he would have ran him right through, and THAT would have been a time. Was MOW as versatile on the track? Sec won from the inside, giving up huge ground on the outside, on the lead, from far back, in between horses. He showed his 3 losses at 3 were flukes by destroying the field and setting a track, or world record after each loss.
rcschumann 9 months ago
@rcschumann You shouldn't get so defensive Mr. Schumann. I never said Secretariat wasn't great. I think he and MOW were the best.
But I'm not citing hearsay, I'm citing facts. Turf is faster than dirt and Sec ran his 1 5/8 on turf while MOW's was on dirt. Yes Sec was eased off, but so was MOW -- read the DRF.
This is an important race because it was the one race MOW was really allowed to run.
My point being, they were very close in times if MOW allowed to run.
evyn10014 9 months ago
@evyn10014 You also haven't put another important fact up here about that 1 5/8 mile distance. Secretariat was running against a field of multiple horses, his strategy being to stalk Kennedy Road. MOW ran a match race . Interesting that you don't want to include Secretariat's Belmont where he did 2:37 and change pulling up over the last 1/8 of a mile on dirt. If Maple had taken him straight to the lead the way Turcotte did at Belmont it's another sub 2:40 1 5/8.
MelC54 8 months ago
@evyn10014 Kelso equaled MOW Mile and 5 eighths in the some race mow set it. Kelso also holds the World record on dirt for 2 miles. In fact, he holds the 3 fastest times ever run on dirt for 2 miles. Prove ran the 4th fastest time for 2 miles

@cf1934 I love Kelso, and think he's a top 3 horse. And at that level they all have a good argument for being the best.

He lost at Woodward after he subbed at the last minute for Riva Ridge, while preparing for the MOW on turf - yes, he then killed the field at MOW setting a track record.
rcschumann 9 months ago

That's what sets him apart.
rcschumann 9 months ago

@evyn10014 How many horses can set a "World Record' on the dirt and then come back eleven days later and set an 'American Record on the grass?

About Secretariat increasing his speed during a race: Wikipedia's entry on Zenyatta says that she did this in 2008's Lady's Secret Stakes. Each fraction faster than the other. Have you heard about this?
ruffianruns 2 years ago
It looks like Zenyatta will be one for the ages.

@ewd76 How many American or World records did she set?
cf1934 7 months ago
@cf1934
You're still holding me to that comment? ; )

@ewd76 Sorry!
cf1934 7 months ago

23johnsonr 2 years ago
And how about the Preakness & Belmont...Man O' War raced in both. Secretariat broke all three Triple Crown records. And still standing. It's now going on 37 years. I think that MOW was great but Secretariat was the true miracle of nature. As a horse, MOW was magnificent. I just think that Secretariat's "perfection" physically, genetically, personality & speed will never be seen again. No man or horse comes close to the greatness of Secretariat. That's why he is still the most watched on youtube.
cmf4321 2 years ago
@cmf4321 Kelso still holds the World Record on dirt for 2miles! He holds the 3 fastest times for 2 miles on the dirt. Prove Out holds the 4th fastest time.Kelso ran the mile and one half on grass in 2:23 &4fifths. Secretariat did it in 2:24. Secretariat went around 2 turns. Kelso went around 3 turns.

Man O' War's stride length, according to the KY Horse Park, and numerous other sources, was 28 feet. Secretariat's was 24, and little John Henry's was 25 1/2 feet long.
