wow... very smooth focus.. that's one thing holding me back from using my t1i.. the "autofocus" sucks... maybe I should invest in a new lens and give it another try. I wish there was an affordable follow focus without having to buy some expensive / big unit
sooo the pics are awesome and the video is in HD? thats all i really want. i really wanted the t2i but im not like an awesome photographer. im a musician and i just wanna be able to make my own videos with good quality and take good quality pics. this camera is good for that?.. someone answer lmao
@JazzellWilliams I use this camera to shoot videos at my boyfriend's band shows. It does an amazing job in low light. I don't even know if it will autofocus, I always use the manual focus so the videos will look more creative. Click on my name and check out my videos of Mark Sala. They were all taken with this camera. My only complaint is that the sound quality isn't great if it is too loud. That means don't shoot right next to the speaker like I did (oops).
Beautiful work with the Takumar Asahi lens. It's definitely perfect for capturing dark scenes and people. Would love to see more videos with this lens.
Hi nice video , I just have some questions ,, how were you using the focuse mode while you were using the video and which lens were you using ? and does the lens that comes with camera can do that or I have to buy a new one plz answer ASAP
Hahahaha at 0:41 - 0:44 shes thinking: " Hay, looks like they are going on a date, thats awsome, all I get to do with em is stand in freezing cold so he can try out new camera" hahaha but awsome camera!!
esta impresionante tu video men CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! espero llegar a ese nivel de calidad ahora que me compre mi camara, ya que solo soy aficionado jeje
@gruponemesis manual focus; yes. there is no auto-focus to speak of on the 500/550d or the 7D for that matter. that is; during video mode. because the mirror/shutter is up, the traditional focus mode is inoperable. you can however use an automatic, contrast based focus that is not too good. you can read lots about this on the net if you want to know more...
I love the video. I found it looking up the canon T1i. I new to taking photos/videos. I have the NIkon D3000 and its become a little to basic for me now. Is this a good camera to move into you think? When i watched this video, this is exactly what i had in my mind to be making with the HD video aspect of the camera.
@threeplusnine The videos can be imported directly into iphoto and I use adobe premiere cs3 to import those .mov files. the quality is still very good.
@jpabst4321 Bigger sensor won't decrease the depth of field. In fact, it increases the DoF, as the lens would need to get larger proportional to the sensor size. To get more light in, more sensitive, more expensive type of sensor could be used.
that was awesome, i was planning on buying this camera especially because of the video capabilities but didnt know how well it shot video but this looks great
Your so cool because your from Chicago! =) Beautiful site already..so this is the Canon right? not the KissX3. On a scale of 1-10 how much would you rate it? Also how much did it cost?
Wow this video made me decide to get the 500d, The ideas and shots are soo simple yet very very impressive and emotional, plus the music is perfect. (for those asking what is the music in this video, it is from Slumdog Millionaire's soundtrack and this particular clip is called Latika's Theme if I am not wrong)
Guys, ok with the quality of the camera, but the real job it's the idea and the artistic work of jpabst4321!!!! You can buy the camera but not the idea.
I LOVE this video. I just bought the Canon T1i and this video solidified my choice. I've gotta get that lens you used. The Takumar 50mm f1.4... wow, incredible. Best video on the beauty of a lens on youtube, bro! Thanks for posting it!
i got it today its veryyyyyyyyyyyyy very awesome! ive been playing with it the entire day! :D i just donno how to work with it entirely plus how can i have the video auto focus?
how can you tell if a lens would be able to mount onto this camera or not? it might be a stupid question but im contemplating buying a new lens and there are so many options! i love the depth of field on the 50mm so i MUST have one but im not sure how to know whether or not it would fit. Again i hope its not to silly a thing to ask :P help would be greatly appreaciated :) GREAT VID!
This is very impressive considering the lighting was as low as you mention. Also, congratulations on having such a pretty girl willing to allow you to make this test video using her as the subject, she's a real beauty. Can this camera auto focus in video mode? How long can you shoot video continuously before it stops recording? Also, is the Canon EOS Rebel T2i and the Canon 500D one same camera? Thanks again. I'm considering getting this soon, depends on recording length.
@yeseverymomentcounts Thank you for all of your generous comments. This camera can 'sort of ' autofucus durning video mode. It will not focus smoothly like a video camera, and it will not focus unless you hit the button to tell it to. It will then zoom in, zoom out looking for the right focus spot. It will not be a 'pretty focusing'... Regarding clip time; your clips will be at least 12 minutes depending on settings and whether the 550D(t2i) or 500D(t1i). They are not the same camera.
@yeseverymomentcounts I suggest getting the T2i. It is an all around better camera with more bells and whistles and true Full HD. Because it can shoot 24p and obtain higher ISO values, it also performs better than the T1i in low light situations. Cheers.
I got stuck with 20 old lensess from ebay, Just turn your kit lens bacvard, to disingage the contacts, or put tape over the big contact +, If you donot want loose it, This is before 550D and sing pettition for FIRMWARE UPGRATE FOR 500D Thanks
Bit more options.. But your footage already looks awesome.. I currently own the 5D which I wanna keep.. Getting the 550D as backup and because of the video options..
This is also the first time I have used my Takumar 50mm f1.4 and I'm definitely loving the shallow depth of field. This camera, along with a fast prime can practically see in the dark
Hi, me again. How many minutes of video recording fit in a SD card of 4gb or 8gb approximately? The battery has good autonomy? How many photos can be taken before it gets out of charge? (approximately)
but the hd video improve supports 1080p @ 24, 25, and 30 fps instead of t1i's 20fps.....Manual video exposure is also available and has external mic input. video is similar to canon 7d but not the 6.7fps burst mode, idk review this t2i on google vs t1i
the polarization coatings are usually worn off these old lenses... however, one thing you can do, which i have since done, is get a coated lens filter. but you are almost always going to run into that problem with 30 year old lenses.
If you already have a polarization filter but isn't the same size than lens provided, only one thing you can do is to buy some proper adapter to wear on old lens on side where filter should set (of course, when having a proper threading to stack one another).
I know how it starts to work, but i have not proper camera. Only have Canon 450D, old manual lenses with similar DOF with wide opened aperture but without the main - the video capturing :(.
But there is a decision. There is some program (I use it once when found on Web) that recorded at the computer disk a video file. It have captured from the Live View window by USB connector till reaching the file size given by programmers.
I'm interested, I have both the t1i and the f/1.8. How do you get the shallow DOF during video? Does the cam automatically adjust the DOF or do you set an aperture and then turn the lens to disconnect the contacts like some people do?
Well, the Canon 50 f1.8 is not a manual aperture lens and to get the most shallow depth of field you need to set your aperture to f1.8. The lens I have has manual aperture; in order to do it on the new Canon you would have to twist the lens like you mentioned to break the contact.
Man, that's some great footage! I have just bought the 500D as my first SLR after using a Fujifilm S9500 for a couple of years and it is the ideal step up for me. I could not agree more with your comments about the faster lens for low light video. I was a little disappointed with 18-55 kit lens in low light and have just got the 50mm F1.8 and the difference is amazing. What other settings dd use use? (Picture style etc.)
Thanks a lot for the nice words. The 50mm is a great little lens. To answer the question below; there's not a huge, huge difference between the Canon f1.8 and f1.4; the 1.8 is cheaper, and is made cheaper, but the added benefit in terms of light is nil. However, if you own the T1i and not the 7D, I would venture to say that the f1.8 lens is JUST FINE; you like saving money. Settings; there are more at my blog ... and apply to the 5D, T1i or the 7D, just scroll down to 7D Film Look
Thanks, I'll take a bit more time to read through the blog for some tips. Would have loved to have got the 1.4 lens but am really happy with the one I got and the difference in price will soon get spent on SD cards!
The real answer is yes and no. The kit lens is pretty 'slow' with an f stop around 4, which means, yeah quality will be the same during the day, but you would not get this quality at night in these low-light conditions. For this you will need a lens that has an f-stop of f2 or faster.
For less than 100 dollars you can pick up the Canon 50mm f1.8... I recommend buying the T1i body only and then getting the 50mm 1.8 instead; but that's just me.
No, no kit lens; some more info to the right and at the blog. Thanks for the comments. I have the 18-55 and it's a fine lens, but I don't really use it much for video; I like the DOF of the faster lenses, and if I'm not mistaken the 18-55 starts at f3.+
I have just bought the t1i, and I cannot wait to use the video!!
Your video was beyond amazing--it should be used to sell this camera, or any camera with HD video--it really says "HEY, I should invest in a good camera so that I can document my life in such a beautiful, creative way". A+

@CovanentFilms if you have a canon DSLR, depending on the make and model, full frame or APS-C, most lenses are optimized for a specific cmos sensor.

Its a pentax takumar.
In irder of earliest first takumar , super takumar and SMC (supermulti coated) Takumar, the latest and generally considered the best.
For a 35mm slr pentax film camera.
Old m42 screw thread probably but they did make pentax pk bayonet fitting ones,
The 50mm f1.4 is a very good lens but getting pricey now on ebay.
All the takumar range are top quality lenses and well worth getting hold of.

Erickjm89 2 years ago
Hi, me again. How many minutes of video recording fit in a SD card of 4gb or 8gb approximately? The battery has good autonomy? How many photos can be taken before it gets out of charge? (approximately)
Many thanks again!

did u hear, they got a t2i now, and its 18.1 mp just like the canon 7d but for half the price except it doesn't go 6fps only half 3.7fps
JavaManEntertainment 2 years ago
half the price so half the fps :P
spartin215 2 years ago
but the hd video improve supports 1080p @ 24, 25, and 30 fps instead of t1i's 20fps.....Manual video exposure is also available and has external mic input. video is similar to canon 7d but not the 6.7fps burst mode, idk review this t2i on google vs t1i

Hi, Buy Polarized Lenses!
dimono87 2 years ago
the polarization coatings are usually worn off these old lenses... however, one thing you can do, which i have since done, is get a coated lens filter. but you are almost always going to run into that problem with 30 year old lenses.
jpabst4321 2 years ago
If you already have a polarization filter but isn't the same size than lens provided, only one thing you can do is to buy some proper adapter to wear on old lens on side where filter should set (of course, when having a proper threading to stack one another).

You are PROFESSIONALLY in love with her :), I say.
Amazing compilation!
Man, you've done a cinematographic work!

Remark.
WiseGuest 2 years ago
I'm interested, I have both the t1i and the f/1.8. How do you get the shallow DOF during video? Does the cam automatically adjust the DOF or do you set an aperture and then turn the lens to disconnect the contacts like some people do?
romeofoever 2 years ago
Well, the Canon 50 f1.8 is not a manual aperture lens and to get the most shallow depth of field you need to set your aperture to f1.8. The lens I have has manual aperture; in order to do it on the new Canon you would have to twist the lens like you mentioned to break the contact.

why don't you just TRY this yourself instead of asking the obvious?

Cause I didnt know how. No need to be a douchebg about fruitcake.

PS Great blog too!
PieFaceRecords 2 years ago

PieFaceRecords 2 years ago
Thank you. Where can I get it for that price? Are there any main differences between f1.8 and f1.4? Thanks!
delavegaz6 2 years ago
Many thanks. If I film with the kit lens, I would get a quality like this?
delavegaz6 2 years ago
The real answer is yes and no. The kit lens is pretty 'slow' with an f stop around 4, which means, yeah quality will be the same during the day, but you would not get this quality at night in these low-light conditions. For this you will need a lens that has an f-stop of f2 or faster.
jpabst4321 2 years ago
For less than 100 dollars you can pick up the Canon 50mm f1.8... I recommend buying the T1i body only and then getting the 50mm 1.8 instead; but that's just me.
jpabst4321 2 years ago
Hi, great video! Were you using the kit lens? (18-55mm). Was it in auto mode? Many thanks!
delavegaz6 2 years ago
No, no kit lens; some more info to the right and at the blog. Thanks for the comments. I have the 18-55 and it's a fine lens, but I don't really use it much for video; I like the DOF of the faster lenses, and if I'm not mistaken the 18-55 starts at f3.+

Your video was beyond amazing--it should be used to sell this camera, or any camera with HD video--it really says "HEY, I should invest in a good camera so that I can document my life in such a beautiful, creative way". A+
