A comment on rock vs jazz....there are exceptions, but rock is a form of pop music & culture....appeal to a target market with look and style and a host of other bullshit. In many cases it's about marketing more than music.
Buddy is the greatest drummer that walked the planet because he was about music not a market.
The Beatles can never be eclipsed or matched and neither can buddy.
Travis Barker is a talented drummer, but it is not acceptable to mention him in the same paragraph as buddy.
@jasaggio target market That's like the old joke : what is a camel?, a horse designed by comittee. The single stroke roll Buddy starts at 2:56 is respect for tradition forged with artistry, blood, sweat and tears and presented to the present and future audience as an aural sculpture saying Not only have I payed my dues and learned my craft but I am aware of how the tradition fits into today and how it points to the future at the same time holding a daring standard up to future artists
Just about looks like it might fall off onto the floor, huh? LOL. Yeah, to play like that with a traditional grip is absolutely amazing (then again, to play like that in any way is absolutely amazing).
Nah. Buddy's feet were almost as fast as his hands. He learned to tap dance in his youth. I've read somewhere from drummers who sat where they could see his feet. Said it was unbelievable how his feet just danced on the pedals. Bonham learned from guys like this. He was great but was not in Buddy's league.
Buddy Rich was the most amazing drummer ever to live. Of course, everything is open to musical interpretation, and he played a certain style of music in a certain time. If he had been playing progressive hard rock in the 70s, who knows what his sound may have been? However, he was a jazz drummer. But as far as technical skill and perfection, I have to rate him as the best overall drummer of all time; in a league of his own.
The greatest jazz drummer of all time, and argueably the greatest in all categories. His attitude, however, left much to be desired. He was very closed minded towards the rock drummers, and acknowledged only Carl Palmer, because Palmer kissed his ass so much. Could he not have tipped his hat to Phil Collins, Bill Brueford, Allen Whie, Ian Paice, Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, or Billy Cobham as well? Intead, he lumped them all into one ball and said that he "couldn't tell one from the other."
Aside from Buddy being friends with Carl Palmer (and check out some of Palmer's recent solos, just as good as his master seen here), I've heard Buddy also said that Bonham was one of the only drummers who taught him a thing or two!
outstanding! this is sheer genius. one of the greatest pieces of drumming i have ever seen. perfect control and timing. his pace is very impressive, as is his creativity and ability. i wish i had his left hand (if not both). hard-pressed to find a better drummer. amazing.
In my opinion, his best and my personal favorite solo of his. The sheer amount of speed, control and dynamics displayed here are just out of this world! We all miss you Buddy, but you left behind a legacy all of us are still trying to unravel. Rest in peace, homie. =]

For all the haters, give him a double kick and he could outplay any death metal drummer ever. Hell, he probably wouldn't even need a double kick.

This should be a video response to every Travis Barker fanboy. You'd think 39 years later someone could top this, but I haven't seen it.

Buddy's genius = right before you've finally figuired out exactly what he just did, he easily does something else that appears more difficult.
...he was just too good to copy just right.

if you took Buddy Rich's arms and John Bonham's legs, you would have the ultimate drummer
the best in rock and jazz (with Buddy Rich getting the overall edge as best drummer ever)

if your talking about speed, I would agree with you, but John had as much or more power in his legs.
I guess the proper combination would be Buddy's spped with Bonham's power.
but like I said earlier, rock vs. jazz drumming is totally different so its almost impossible to compare the two
zosodude13 2 years ago
Rock drumming is easy compared to jazz.

For the most part, that is very true.

Buddy was always on fire....even on his worst days he could still burn a hole in the fcuking floor!
If he were around today he'd be 91 years old and probably still kicking everyone's ass.
