I guess DiC cranked up the volume on the music when re-editing the show for syndication in 2003, in addition to replacing the original logos at the end and time-compressing the episodes (the music would play at an abnormally-high tempo, but I reverted it to original speed for this version)

That also reminds me of in another birthday-related book, "Grover's Bad Dream," when Big Bird and Grover tie at a similar game, Big Bird gets the prize because it's HIS birthday. Wasn't "Sesame Street" supposed to teach fairness and stuff like that?

Compare this to the later books (including the newest ones by Jan and Mike Berenstain) or even the 2003 TV series; Sister is eight and has matured quite a bit by that time.

Sister really took it hard in this episode, didn't she? I read the original book when I was 7 or 8. At the time, I found it unfair that Sister didn't get the prize in Pin The Tail on the Donkey. Eventually, though, the logic that it's her party and she's getting all these presents etc so this concession could be made toward the guests started to make sense to me. However, I think the parents made one mistake: they should have explained this to Sister BEFORE the party.

I would have to say that, by far, the most effective means of circumventing the problematic effects this has in televised fiction is the birthday episode of the Powerpuff Girls; it's made evident that they were about to sing the copyrighted song, but they get cut off, so the problem is altogether avoided.
