how can you tell if a cassette reccorder is AC BIAS or DC BIAS

AC Bias has a great recording qualilty with no snow noises in the background. The best way to record music on cassette. And the music will sound just like the original.

DC Bias on the other hand has a lower recording qualilty with snow noises in the background and it is not a good choice for recording music. Because of the background noises the music will not sound as good as the original.

As for how you can tell the difference between the two? Well, you can find out one way by recording with it and see if it has snow noises in the background.

You can also tell by opening the unit up and see if it has a small round coil close by.

this is true about old technology. my old GE cassette recorder from the early 80's has VERY good sound quality. the 1989 Technics is decent. the 94 unit is pretty ok, but the 04' sony is pretty crappy

I have a couple of these cheap ass boomboxes one I took apart b/c it got hit by a power surge and fried the PS I now have the CD player portion sitting on my dresser and its hooked to my kenwood stereo. the tape parts are long gone and the main amp is being used in an amp project and I dont know where the radio board went. I got a Curtis Boombox with no tape deck in it and its ok not the best sound but whatever. both boomboxes were DC bias. man that modern boombox sucks. no CD player.

Nice fun with powertools as well! I personally have nothing against destroying crappy stuff, just so you know. As to the glow sticks, you could try blending them (the BlendTec guy did).

You could pour lighter fluid or gasoline into a cheap cassette player like that, plug it in and let the arc of the A/C ignite the thing. and if that does not work, then there would be "other" means of making it burn (which I will leave to your imagination.

In the modern defense, The vintage appliance was likely more expensive, even in it's time, and also, tape was a major media, so better tape players were available to the mass market.

My point? The best audio equipment of today will always best that of yesterday, and generalizations based on comparisons like this should be considered invalid.

That being said, Today's mass market stuff is CRAP.

You can hear a difference. DC Bias has snow sound in the back ground and AC Bias does not.
