  • That double-kick roll at 3:40 is pretty sick

  • Simon Phillips playing drums...Love it!

  • The quality of the video is horrible ;-) But the theme of the lyrics is just actual.

Die Qualität des Videos ist schrecklich ;-) Aber das Thema des Textes ist immer noch aktuell. [english/german]

  • on the red fender Mr... David Gilmore!!!

  • Buena banda...!!1

  • only pete could do a rock n roll jump with an a acoustic guitar & still look cool!

  • I think the horns at 2:12 are supposed to be representing sirens of that white city neighbourhood

  • trommelsolo mit extrem cooler begleitung.....

  • 1985. the year of ur ma

  • are you fh kidding me? how great?

  • pino palladino on drums?

  • David Gilmore+Pete Townshend= AWESOMENESS!

(Not in the wrong way, to you people who think every word seems gay -_-)

  • @Shep9250 oui tu as vraiment raison !!!

  • Wow! I've never seen this clip, but that was simply awesome. Never would have thought Gilmore would fit in to a Townshend song, but it was incredible, wasn't it?

  • i agree with MultiBluesapphire...Ive always thought this song was just Phenomenal!!!! I recognized David Gilmour"s voice in there too. What an amazing effort on this song...the quality of the musicians blows me away!!! I Love This Song!!!

  • Powerful line-up Wow. Gilmour is Amazing ,looks like no effort.

  • one of the greatest guitarists arranging a hit song around a sound public message! Just awesome and really unique!

  • Chucho Merchan on Bass!!!

  • Chucho Merchan on Bass!!!

  • even though it has that horrible 80's twang to it, it's still a great song

  • Pete Townshend had that "Who Can It Be Now?" face in the beginning of the video.

  • Give The Gift Of Life....Give Blood.

    Think About It.......

  • Wow!! What a artisit, what a song, what a band, what a drummer...and the bass totally kicks my ass!

  • @MrGeorgeMolina Pino Palladino on bass on the studio version...it's his bass line!!!, but Chucho does kick ass here live!

  • One of the greatest singer/songwriters that ever lived!!!!! Pete Townshend sharing a public service message that became one of his most underrated yet powerful solo tracks from 1985's White City-The Album!!! Simon Phillips delievering his all powerful drum solo and the haunting horn section reminisicing the late great John Entwistle this was definitely a solo highlight that never really got the recognition it truly deserved!!! Behind those blue eyes is a big ass taliented brain!!!!

  • @MultiBluesapphire Could not agree more !!!!!!!

  • @MultiBluesapphire excellent comment, and yes it's a song which deserved a far bigger audience, then again all his solo works were i felt always missing from radio playlists

  • White City has three or four songs that should be classic rock staples, but because it's Pete Townshend solo stuff, it's discounted, somehow. Like this song, and "Second Hand Love," especially, are just monstrous songs, that unless you're a Townshend fan, you might have missed.

  • DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE!!!

  • Phillips is a perfect Drummer.

  • Damn powerful music

  • Great track!

  • yet another killer riff.

  • You can always tell is someone is a true drummer at heart if they love this song.

  • Where can I buy this concert on DVD or Bluray?? I just need it!!

  • @VILUTEAR BUY THE ALBUM WHITE CITY,PLAY AT FULL BLAST WHEN YOU ARE READY TO GO OUT ON THE TOWN WOW

  • Simon phillips in turbo mode! this is one of the great drum tracks of all time!!

  • "Give Blood but don't expect to ever see reward" I get my reward from giving blood: a free lunch! That's the way they handle blood drives where I work. Not bad! Seriously!

  • SiPhi taking off at the 3:41 mark! Always loved this live version. David G's perfect strumming on this, Simon's sickly talented and enthusiastic skins, the added bongo percussions, the swaying backing vocals by the girls and of course Mr. White City himself's engaging presence, playing and meaningful lyrics. As for the 9 dislikes? Probably under 18 yrs old and think Beiberf and P Tiddy are "real musicians" lol!

  • Who's the bass player ?

And is the girl on percussion at 3:56 Sheila E. ?

Sorry if these questions have already been answered, didn't find a clue among the comments.

  • @mirzamarco The percussionist is Jodi Linscott.

  • @mirzamarco The bass player is Chucho Merchan and the girl on Percussion is Crystal Talifero.

  • @216trixie The percussionist is Jody Linscott. SP on Drums.

  • well this is just fucking terrible aint it? guy should be in prison for bouncing kids off his dick

  • @SatansFloater nob.

  • The first 45 seconds of this song are so epic.

  • Pete's got the best leap! How did Gilmour end up in this lineup?

  • @blaster1985 The story goes Pete had ear-related issues and his doctor adviced him to put electric guitar apart for a while, in order to avoid permanent complications. However, Pete soon discovered he wanted to play live no matter what, so he grabbed acoustic and hired Gilmour to kick ass on electric in his place.

  • Great tune to play no matter what your instrument is!

  • Pete ruined his 80s and 90s albums with bands with so many members. All you need and all you should need is a drummer, a bassist, a guitarist and a voice. But this live version sounds better than the lousy album version (which was the best song in the lousy album, to begin with).

  • Simon Phillips, Dave Gilmour and Pete for this song, it doesn't get much better than this. Phillips is an animal behind the drums.

  • The horns put this shit over the top!

  • @puckerfactor1 thats the truth the horns make this killer song even more kiler of is it killerer?? no wait its the killerest

  • @unclegladys Most Youths of today do get the horns in a rock group,as it is rarely done. But as this song shows its very powerful. I also think Pete Townsend is an underated talent,Then and now. Most of his solo music is powerful and driving just like this song. Rough boys and slit skirt are a couple of examples.

  • I remember woodshedding over this song MANY years ago. Simon's playing was so inspiring as was Pino Palldino's fretless bass line on the album. I somehow convinced the high school band I played in to perform this live at a high school talent night. I remember thinking the audience would be wowed by our passion and technical prowress, no such luck. I watched the audience as I played with this dazed look on their faces saying to themselves "what the heck is this crap", too funny :)

  • I always get a laugh from these knuckleheads who feel a need to fight about truly subjective things like music and style. Comparing Moon to Phillips is like comparing apples and oranges. And the moronic quips back and forth only confirm the idiocy behind these comments. Is Hendrix better than Segovia? Is ice cream better than sorbet? Is my comment better than yours? Debate if you want to debate, but anger and vitriol only paint you as somebody who can't back up the points your trying to make.

  • Great performance from all. Is there a Live CD or DVD from this video/Concert ?

  • You know i did not like the WHO At all ...aside from a few numbers, and i think Keith Moon stunk a wild man WHO just pounded and hit everything all the time the sloppy style he had made me sick...Now this is music,Townshend is a Genius and here with a killer band he shines...The slop Moon put down made the WHO suck

  • @Spaun09 I agree, when it comes to drumming MOON was a joke as is Ringo to the beatles, but i really enjoyed the who. Simon Phillips is just a monster.

  • @dubberdo clueless!

  • @dominiccarter77 :-) Have a nice day!

  • @dominiccarter77 Moon Sucks and the WHO Stunk because of the crap he pounded out of his dull brain...Your a cunt

  • @Spaun09 Haha! What a berk! Moon sucks! He INVENTED drumming. You saying Moon sucks is like a painter saying Picasso is shit, or Da Vinci is useless! You want to have a serious word with yourself! Call yourself a drummer? Obviously quite clueless the amount of influence Keith has given is unbelievable. Calling me a cunt is very clever coming from someone of influence. Keith broke the rules, and then re-wrote them. Saying The Who stinks. I'll say it again, obviously clueless to what real music is.

  • @dominiccarter77 Moon SUCKS Period he was called the loon, and he played like one..Anyone can break rules A POUNDING SILLY FOOL IS ALL HE WAS.He did not Play he just hit whatever he had in reach..INFLUENCE MY ASS...A DRUNK SOT WHO GOT LUCKY...THE WHO SUCKS DRAFT HORSE COCK ..A sloppy shit band.to hear them live is to hear a din of out of time crap, and slop,he passed out behind his kit from taking horse dope.. HA what a scum...THE WHO WAS CRAP,AND SLOP AND THE LOON WAS THE BEST AT THAT,

  • @Spaun09 You have a mouth full of shit, cause your heart and your soul are full os shits.

  • @antonis707 Learn how to speak and write... you are a fool

  • @Spaun09 You are obviously a mixed up fella, who has broken out of the loon asylum! Why not listen to some tracks, say 'Won't get fooled again' maybe that might wake you up from your illness!

Hope you feel better soon loser!

  • @dominiccarter77 I vomit at the thought.... dumb ass

  • @Spaun09 "dumbass" christ you're so American. What a moron! No sense trying to educate a turd! Good day sir!

  • @dominiccarter77 If you Weren't so inane i may have Enlightened you on true inovative,Progressive Drumming...but you would rather glorify Mediocrity..So keep your mind Narrow

  • @Spaun09 You have a mouth full of shit, cause your heart and your soul are full of shits.

  • @Spaun09 Cluless cock!

  • @dominiccarter77 Brain dead twat

  • @Spaun09 your a moron if he was so sloppy why are they like the best band ever

  • @Spaun09 you are an idiot the who was one of the most influential bands in rock history. if Keith moon sucked how come all other drummers say he was the greatest and most original. Noel Gallager got it right when he called him the Jimmy Hendrix of the Drums. You probably think hendrix sucked too.

  • @dwati7 Every Drummer I know HATE THE LOON...BTW noel gallager blows.HENDRIX HAD COOL STYLE

  • Moon, Phillips and Brezicki great drummers.

  • i love this period when white and black people mixed their musical talent to create something between soul, blues and rock !! (like eric clapton etc)

  • gilmour..

  • The bassist is Big Country's Tony Butler, who also played on Townshend's 1980 album "Empty Glass" along with drummer Mark Brzezicki.

  • ! That's all I've got to say. . .

  • simon philips is da bomb

  • fricking awesome!!!!!

  • hey jongreek, that`s it...

  • HAMMER... DAVID & PETE...the perfection, absolutly

  • Simon Phillips!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • THE WHO----PETE T. W/BUD LITE............

  • AMAZING LINEUP, NO MATTER WHAT THE POSEURS SAY!

I just wish they'd given more screen time to Pino Palladino on the fretless Steinberger. He's an incredible player. Listen to the fills he does on the studio version of this song-- epic!

  • Simon Phil is incredible in this video, without him, the song would not have been number 5 in the billboard mainstream rock tracks 1985. Also helps to have David Gilmour playing in your band. Pete and David are both legends and adding Simon Phil into the band is the topping on the cake. Guys are incredible musicians unlike todays crap music.

  • Moon was Moon and Phillips is Phillips ... They were/are a couple of the most amazing Drummers on the planet ... Now get on with the music.

  • who is the drummer ????

  • @donabsurdo : the great - and young - Simon Phillips

  • @donabsurdo

    Simon Phillips at his best!!

  • "Gilmoooour."

  • Give blood til 7 @ the Mason City Blood Drive and I'll let you in for free to the show this weekend at Mason City Limits Comedy Club. Blood drive is @ the church on Tonica and Arch ST. til 7pm.

  • good point john, but why the angry statement? chill ot man and give love.

  • I was a MSG for the Ronnie Lane benefit concert --simon phillips played for both Clapton and Beck, not sure if he played for Page--Page was a mess--had not played since Bonzo died and i felt bad for him--it was called the ARMS benefit--Ronnie Wood showed up too. just a nod to Simon and the rest-- a great show for a great cause. TY for post

  • If you look, you can seriously not find this album anywhere, so I look for about a year only to find my dad has it on vinyl, that was a good night.

  • its a very very doog song,

    greats from germany

  • Adding horns to this song was the BEST IDEA.

  • Noch richtig gute, handgemachte, geile Mucke ohne elektronischen Schnörgel!

Excellente Musiker, ganz oben in der Genialenscala, na klar, Simon Phillips!

  • I can't understand how this did not make the original deep end live record

  • That was amazing

  • Simply amazing and intense!

  • Gilmooooooouuurrrrrrr!!....lol

  • He you go Ann one of my favourites

  • Wow...Simon Phillips is SICK!

  • @jdrummys He doesn't look ill to me. Is he OK?

  • @jdrummys hellz ya he is!!

  • HAPPY 65th B-Day PETE!!!!!!

  • It's useless.

I must return to this video at least once a month or so, simply to feel the emotions being evoked here. Sort of a reminder of the world we live in.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @rockinroller7 so true!! I have this video on my favorites and NUST listen to it on a regular basis!!

  • @unclegladys

    Cool.

    Very cool.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • Man one of my all time fav songs full of raw energy, rhythm and guts! When the f--k will we get some ballsy music like this again ???

  • Man one of my all time fav songs full of raw energy, rhythm and guts! When the f--k will we get some ballsy music like this again ???

  • Man one of my all time fav songs full of raw energy, rhythum and guts! When the f--k will we get some ballsy music like this again ???

  • gets really 50s (crappy lighty) by 2:30 but goes back to kicking ass at 3:00 again

  • nope, it's definitely Simon.

  • he's just the best :)

  • Looks like Kenny Jones on the drums there, not Simon Phillips.

  • is this not the greatest backup band of all-time?

    ALL heavies.

David Gilmour, Simon Phillips, Sheila E., (studio bass was Pino Palladino, not too sure about here).

  • Double kick @ 3:40 FTW!!!

  • yep that sure is a kick-ass fill

  • This song has what I think to be Simon Phillips' finest performances. He played drums on a lot of Pete's solo stuff, but this one really stands out.

  • Can anyone please tell me the CD which contains this song?

  • @BFishyP

It is to be found on the Album "White City" from Pete Townshend, done in the 80ís.

  • @WD038

    Released in 1985.

  • @BFishyP The album's called White City

  • Fuck'n great band!

  • i must say, Pino and Mr Starkley will never replace the image of the original players, but they do a bloody good job of the music, seeing them live, i reckon is not greatly different to the original band, full accreditation, its' truly brilliant music.

  • For the love of all that is holy, Simon Phillips is possessed in this thing! He's always been up there with my faves, but good god. It would have been icing on the cake if Pino were in this too, but this is the Simon Phillips academy of "I'm going to blow your mind drums".

  • Pino???? John Entwhistle...the greatest bassist of ALL time.....

  • wonder if he was thinking about supple young buttocks when he sang this

  • Absolutely superb. I didn't think it was Pino either, but looking at one grab from the vid, I do believe, if you add 23 years to the face, it is P. Palladino. He was credited with bass on White City and I really liked him on it. He sounds muted and stunted with the current "Who" band. Of course, after the Ox..... I agree about Simon Phillips. Loved him with Jack Bruce on Hows Tricks _1976! I will definitely check out the PSP group!

  • who is the drummer? simon phillips?

  • Yep.

  • Have you seen his work with PSP (Phillips, Saisse and Palladino)? They're doing old jazz covers. He's got amazing strength, amazing groove, and amazing pulse. There's nothing worse than a drummer with no balls, and Simon is definitely not THAT! Cheers

  • No, they're not doing old covers. They're doing a combination of Simon's songs, Saisse's song, Palladino's songs and the NEW songs they have been writing for their new album.

  • Okay, I was partially mistaken. There was a video on here of them doing Blue Rondo a La Turk, by Dave Brubeck, hence my comment.

  • Phillips is pounding the tar out of the skins. Kind of wish they stuck with him the last 20+ years.

  • Zak Starkey is the closest they've had to Keith moon since he died...although he can never be replaced....just like John Entwistle....

  • Shame they didn't show more of Pino Palladino. Bass players always seem to get the short end of the stick (unless it's Tony Levin, double pun intended).

  • It's not Pino...although can't be quite sure who he is.....(Pino wouldn't ever hop up and down like that with a Steinberg)

Hope you don't mind my reply.

Have you had a look at the 'Tube' version?

    No we're talking! Cheers.

  • Not at all. It's hard to tell who it is, but thanks for lwtting me know that is wasn't Pino!

Can you give me a link to the Tube version?

  • I believe it's a gentleman named Chucho Merchan.

    (t'internet, it's great!!)

  • Or Tony Butler of Big Country.

  • Excellent song but i personally think the studio version is much more powerful

  • top draw, with james may from the bbc popular top grear on stat , far out jim give it loads , nice !

  • quality jam

  • Powerful!

  • townsend shat when hendrix came along and here he is lettin dave gilmour play it as it is.

  • Who's playing Bass?

  • Chucho Merchan is playing bass.

  • @Villa129

Pino Palladino as far as I know.....

  • Think it's a gent named Chucho Merchan

  • Tony Butler from the Scot-rock band Big Country.

  • give Love and keep blood between brothers

  • Simon Phillips was all wrong for The Who!!! His busy playing is all too tight and in time. Keith had a way of making a huge sound that Simon Phillips couldn't do.

He doesn't even get mentioned in the documentary from a couple of years ago.

I think Simon is great on songs like this and on Pete's solo stuff, but not the Keith Moon stuff.

  • 1989 Who tour Simon Phillips. Outstanding. Also Slit Skirts. Great dumming! One of my top 5 drummers.

  • Townsend is the genius- he can have any drummer he wants.

  • One of my all time favorite songs, with a LOT of my all time favorite players. Doesn't matter the mood I am in before I click this song, it is ALWAYS improved by the end of it. Nothing against Keith Moon, but I would pick Simon over him, based on the range of his ability.

  • Per the Moon v. Phillips debate: Moon was a rock star. Phillips is a musician.

  • Nnnooooooooo....... Phillips is a dutch company, and Moon is something that you stare at while enjoying this great performance.........

Silly drummer debates overhere by people who can't enjoy music........

  • I agree with you about the debate thing, but it is a fact that Phillips is heavily in demand all over the place for many kinds of playing, whereas Moon was essentially only the drummer for the Who. He would not have been able to play what Simon can do. And I can and do enjoy music. I love Moon's playing anyway.

  • who cares about the drummer moon was the whos drummer just like john is the bassist u wont find anybody better to put in there place

  • Moon vs Pillips: Thats unfair: Simon is the better drummer there ist no doubt about that. He's one of the completest drummer, the world ever seen. He can play Pop, Rock and also Jazz. His technical skills are tremendous and he has enough phantasie, to create great drumpatterns and Fills ( special Phillips-Licks).

Moon was crazy, he was a type of guy and a drummer for the people - and a very good drummer. But in relation to philipps - from drummers point of view - phillips is far away from Moon.

  • After this song on this evening ,everyone knows Simon phillips! ^^

  • Simon Philips Rocks

  • Townshend's lyrics are amazingly introspective - and yet he makes you feel like the song is yours.

    just like Lennon/McCartney

  • All you wankers comparing drummers and other musicians, saying Moon is better than Phillips or vice versa, that Jeff Beck should be playing instead of Gilmour, can go pound sand!! No one cares about the tiresome testosterone-fueled, ignorant ramblings of saying this guy is better than that guy. How about enjoying this kick ass track and performance for what it is?
