It's when you pull it out of water and not drain the gas tube for 2 Mississippis that is the problem. I recommend draining any weapons chamber & gas system before firing. @VanDaRifleman The M14's (and for that matter H&K G3's, FN FAL's etc) are being dusted off, updated with scopes and what not, because the specific conflict and terrain, asks for a different approach. The Taliban or Iraqi insurgentsare usually sniping, or just hitting from longer ranges on the coalition forces, so thats why they gave every squad a long range weapon to take some guy out at over 500m. If they would hit coalition forces head on in a set-piece battle, the M16 would do just fine

@GalantPeer81 It's not even that, gp81. The M16's operating system is very sensitive to filth & carbon. It needs diligent cleaning & pollutes itself faster than the M14 ever did. The M14 could be cleared of dirt by removing the mag & peeing the action clean. Penetration-wise, there are after-action reports recording Marine & army infantry units pinning NVA and VC patrols at ranges of nearly 300 yards with M14's through dense jungle. 5.56x45mm is to light to even think about doing that.

Don't blame M16 for USA losing Vietnam war. We lost because going into the North to REALLY beat the enemy meant war with China and/or USSR. Once the VC and NVA realized that the American people back home didn't have the stomach for the war they simply applied enough pressure to keep the body bags heading home. I think the US in 1957 would have done well to have taken the 5.56mm for its lighter weight and superior controllability when fired automatically but not tried to use an gun that was more fancy that it had to be. Plenty of cheaper, simpler and proven gun designs that could fire the 5.56mm fine in 1957.

Im pretty sure the rifle the fat guy shows at 7.16 is not an M16A1 but in fact a XM16E1 you can tell by the 3 prong flash hider (A1 normally has bird cage), the slab side reciever (M16A1 has a protective rim around the mag release button) and a chromed bolt (generally not used on A1). These guys are meant to be experts i wish they get there facts straight.

It helps to assist a stuck round into the chamber. Sometimes the casing gets caught up when the gun is dirty. The forward assist is the M-16's response to this , allowing the soldier to resolve this situation quickly and safely.

It happens in most guns, despite what a lot of people on YouTube will say.
