Its purpose is to supply this data into a midi slave's (synth/drummachine) audio bank data and play the notes AS IF a human player was playing BUT more accurate (if done correctly of course) . Midi is a very important part of a professional studio to keep track of tempo/start&stop mixes etc etc etc! and the only difference between yesterday and today is that before they used Control Voltage gates coz no DAW was present in the 60's
