The decoder was the same exact one that Ovaltine used to market as the "Little Orphan Annie" decoder. What the hell was the deal, was Ovaltine stuck with millions of those things or what? Surprised that they didn't market a "Captain Midnight Shake-up Mug" as well.
I lived in Japan from 1957 to 1960 I thought the name was changed by the Japanese to "Captain Jet" but maybe there were other reasons. I don't remember what the characters looked like or even the plane, but I instantly recognized the opening scene when it shows the headquarters. Ovaline sponsosred the show (I drank it) & even sent off for my secret decoder ring. All the darn thing told me was the name of next week's show. Even as a kid i felt ripped off. allnewsltrs@aol.com
As a Secret Squadron member, you were expected to drink 3 glasses of Ovaltine every day. I tried and failed to live up to this. It didn't help that I never really liked the stuff. lol. Anyone remember the free SQ patches that Ovaltine once attached to their product? I used to compete with my friends in seeing who could collect the most patches.
This commercial/offer, featuring star Richard Webb, was seen only on "CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT" [sponsored by Ovaltine] during its first season (1954-'55); the series aired on Saturday mornings at 11am(et) on CBS for two seasons, and was later syndicated as "JET JACKSON" {due to Ovaltine owning the rights to the original "CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT" title}.
Darn - I lost my decoder sixty years ago. If anyone else still has there's can they decode 17-3-20 for me? Remember, set your decoder to A-3. Thanks

I know. It must've been better being a kid in those days.

Funny to see the guy using a scapel to remove top of the jar. It was a dangerous time to be a kid in the 1950s!!

I used to have one of these, but I guess I lost it. Damn, maybe eBay...
Now, I can appreciate the fact that the decoder ring was loosely (very!) based on the Enigma machines!!

I have an autographed picture of Captain Midnight. Received it after I wrote to him.

There were no zip codes in the 1950s but for larger cities there were sometimes these things called "zones".

The '50s seem like a lot of fun for children. I noticed that there were no zip codes at the time of the commercial aired.

@riverpotato - OK. I cheated. I asked my mom to buy me Ovaltine just to join and get the decoder. Then I switched back to Hershey''s Chocolate Syrup.
