If you love music and want to be in the business of music, you won't do it for the ladies, the fashion, or the fame. You'll do it because you love it. That's what MDC's song is all about. It's not about "hating the rich". It's about that fucked mind frame and goal of the very musician who lost the heart, soul, and vision that he may have had. And as a result every little Johnny and Judy thinks the wrong way today. THANKS!
I mean Christ all mighty. Punk has lost its meaning. It's so dull now! Punk is NOT NOFX, Total Chaos, Bad Religion, The Casualties, etc., anymore. The fact that there's this continuous idea that Punk should be the mind frame trap of the 1970's is utter shit! IT'S NOT! It was supposed to fucking evolve! Thankfully, you have artists like Dave Dictor, Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski who continue to do what they have understood all along. Punk means freedom to evolve. Don't stay in the same rut. MOVE!
Also, what it's truly about is being free to create a form of music never before heard. That's what Punk was from the beginning. And due to the fact that the corporate world took that and raped it, killed it, and spewed its results to the masses. The masses (majority) walk around thinking that music is supposed to sound the way they have been taught. How the fuck can you unteach a society that the way they hear music or view life is NOT THAT FUCKING WAY! IT NEVER WAS!!!
To TheREALspankum. Its not a scene its a way of life, a way of thinking. And when you have people that use it to make money its fucked up. When music doesn't have a meaning, it looses all meaning and purpose. When there are people who actually want to make a difference. People who set out to spread a message. Judging by your spelling and grammar, you're 12. You took no pride in what you are saying. So why should anyone take you serious, if you don't take yourself seriously.
@FuckFacts Nofx are still an independant band dude, their on their own label now. Its a shame about Epitaph, they were a pretty awesome record company back in the 90s, the only bands I like that are still on there are Bad Religion and Pennywise
i think the main point of this songs is that punk rock is a expression that has been sold out and killed the ''punk rock'' scene. also the song being a tribute to Tim Yohannan of course
I lol'd a bit when logos for both Agnostic Front and Dropkick Murphy's appeared during the phrase "unheard of bands somewhere to show". MRR hated Agnostic Front, considered them fascist and neo-nazi's, if Timmy and Roger Miret ever crossed paths Timmy'd likely have gotten his head kicked in. And I highly doubt MRR or Gilman has ever shown DM any love.
I understand were MDC is coming from, But i mean jesus. Sometimes punk rockers can be very narrow minded and arogent. Bad Religion has been around for 30 YEARS! And they have worked so hard for thier music and their message to get out there. And they are finally getting some recognition for it and sum cash for all there work, and all of a sudden there total sellouts??!!
1. YOU NEED MONEY TO LIVE PEOPLE!!! CURRENCY IS THE WAY THE FUCKING WORLD WORKS. would rather have sum good cash? or be broke?
Hardcore was designed to be beyond the ken of anyone who could be swayed by fame&fortune or vulnerable to narcissism in any way, and it will be accessible to anyone who's ready to abandon vanity and rise above the lure.
Love this song but MDC shouldnt be talking about Nofx like that. Nofx makes cracks at bands, thats what they do, dont take it so personally just ignore it. Besides that great song...R.I.P. Timmy Yo
Also, does anyone else think the part about NoFX is only in here because Fat Mike said MDC's "songs sounded the same and kind of sucked" in Kabuki Girl? Lol, it's shitty, but I bet Fat Mike didn't have fuck all to say after he heard this song.
Nofx and Rancid aren't independant bands. both were on Epitaph for a while, I don't know where nofx is now but I do know that Rancid's Indestructable CD was released on the Warner Bro's label lol... If that isn't selling out, I don't know what is.
i like this song, but he makes it seem like punk is about being as broke as possible. uh, ramones, sex pistols? i think they might have made a few dollars in their day and they were originators...
good points though about pink and rancid, bad religion & brittney, etc. fuck that was lame. then again, i have never met either of them, so i shouldn't judge. pink might be an alright person, definitely can't stand her music though...
i believe music scenes don't die because bands make money.
Being "punk as fuck" isn't the point of the song. Tim Yohannan was the founder of MaximumRockandRoll, one of the longest lasting independent music and counterculture zines. MDC is criticizing NOFX, Rancid, and Bad Relgion for abandoning the punk ethos of undermining capitalist culture. In fact, MDC, argues, they are a PART of the very culture they set out to dismantle. Everytime I hear "Dinosaurs will Die" by NOFX, I can't help but thinking of how much they are now the dinosaurs.
The Ramones weren't very famous until their later years and after they broke up, the only reason they made quite a bit of money while they were touring was because they played so many shows, which is sweet. And the sex pistols are horrible. Nofx and the other bands mentioned make a lot of their money through corporate sponsorship. (While being a shill for the warped sneaker tour fashion) I like NoFX, Bad Religion, and Rancid's music, but it's hard to respect anyone signed to epitaph.
So true. I don't consider Fat Wreck as bad as Epitaph at all. Fat Wreck still puts out extremely non-mainstream bands like loc, who had only great things to say about the label.
Epitaph on the other hand is slowly getting more bands like bring me the horizen.
@TheREALspankum Well I have no right to say wats punk and wats not but my opinon on punk is punk music is not about making money or wanting to become popular like Ramones and the Pistols became im not saying there not punk but I mean i walk down the hall of my school and see all the kids wearin Ramones shirts who make fun of me for havin a green mohawk wearin LOC and MDC patches and bien a punk its just my opinion though not that it matters
i like nofx but i can see what there saying in the song about them. epitaph has so many shitty ass bands on their lable. and fuck the warped tour

lol yea maybe
i think they went a bit far sayin that they sold out
i mean their an independent band
and the same with rancid
but the part about epitaph is true
they sold out for the shitty mainstream music and quit signing punk bands
