When Madonna covered "American Pie," I was like, "what the hell is she thinking, f***ing up this classic song?" (I love Madonna too, but the version was just f***ed up) But then I heard Don McLean say that that cover was like the best present anyone ever gave him-- because it made him serious amounts of money, that he really needed at the time. That was when I started rethinking the ethics of cover songs.

A great song like this one can't be ruined unless the artist puts together an arrangement that isn't true to the feeling of it - and Tim McGraw did NOT do that. A LOT of artists don't write all of their own songs and still do a damn fine job interpreting and performing well-written songs like this one. Tim gave this song extra exposure to those who may not have otherwise heard it. A deep bow of thanks and respect to Ryan Adams for writing it.
