those were the days indeed... thanks harry for bringing me back to the times when my father would tell me stories and hum this song till i fell asleep... true, ths is the song i sang to my six kids and now the song i still sing to my grandchildren... a timeless piece. thank you, thank you so very much, GODBLESS...
my dad sung me to sleep with songs of Harry Belafonte.. this one and Jamaika farewell were my favorite..and nowadays, i sing my own kids with just those songs to sleep....
I was also born in September but this song is very sentimental to me and one of the songs that makes me wish I could go back in time even if things might not have been so great. What voices in those days...like Nat King Cole, Harry Belafonte, Frankie Lane, jim reeves, Marty Robbins and so many more. Joe
Really? I think they had the coolest equipment imaginable back then. Big huge tube microphones. Everything was enormous with vacuum tubes and warm sounding and recorded onto huge 2 inch analog tape. . There wasn't nice affordable home recording gear available back then probably though.
@jackiesalt thats just the same i feel.. my dad sung me to sleep with songs of Harry Belafonte.. this one and Jamaika farewell were my favorite..and nowadays, i sing my own kids with just those songs to sleep....
a great romanian singer,Aura Urziceanu, made a remake after this song.I am not saying it is better but is shure worth to listen.just write Aura Urziceanu-September:)
I was born on September 5, 1955. Somehow this month seems to have certain mystic and poetic characteristics related to the Summertime that bring back memories of our past when most TVs were B&W and no cell phs nor TV cable. Many of us indeed remember those mellow and yellow Septembers of "Long ago and far way." And we think. "If I only could go back in time and relive those Septembers of the past."
@Galaor09 Hello! I am exactly 1 week your senior, having been born on August 29, 1955. I agree with you that the month of September has mystic and poetic characteristics. Primarily, it is the end of summer, and soon it is time to dress for fall. And we all know what comes next. The famous "September Song" is an aging man's lament over his lost youth. Let's face it my friend: At almost age 55 we have more yesterdays than tomorrows in our lives. We are approaching the autumn of our years.
Deep in December, when your life is almost over, try to remember the fun and joy of your life, your family, your friends and experiences. Savor them. This is a beautiful version with a very mellow voice.

He backphrases so far behind the music that as I'm listening I'm afraid he'll get stuck but he never does. Love the sound of his voice though.

Try to remember the kind of September
when life was slow and oh, so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
when grass was green and grain was yellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
when you were a tender and callow fellow,
Try to remember and if you remember the follow.

Try to remember when life was so tender
that no one wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender that
dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender that
love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember and if you remember then follow.

Deep in December it's nice to remember
altho you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December it's nice to remember
without the hurt the heart is hollow.
Deep in December it's nice to remember
the fire of September that made us mellow.
Deep in December our hearts should remember and follow
