You do realise that for the big red hits you just need to hit the center of the drum and for the big blue hits you need to hit the area within the outside of the drum.

DS won't recognise two hits at once... stop playing this game wrong, it's irritating.

I think it must have a larger timing window for the big hits. I'm pretty sure if you hit it with two styli, the hit is counted at the midpoint between the two in most DS games.

Also, how fast can you hit notes before the game can't register them? About as fast as 1/24th notes at 150 BPM?
