  • I have a hard time understanding anyone disliking this! I love all Dougie's music, but Kathy Mattea's beautiful voice really brings this song to life.

  • This song was also recorded by Rich Mullins. I cant decide which version I like better, both are so beautiful.

  • I have been looking for this song for years! Thank you for posting it!

  • Very nice duet, great vocals and harmony. Nice pictures.Loved it.

  • I fell in love with the song the first time I heard Rich Mullin's Version. I managed to find a copy of Dougie's International best of collection and was chilled to the bone by Dougie's haunting version... as well as so many other of his songs. Been a huge fan ever since.

I knew of Kathy's version, but I never knew they did a duet which makes tonight's discovery all the more precious. The voice of an angel layered over a song of yearning and a cry for home. Wow.

  • Fabulous :)

  • they collaborate so well!

  • Her voice is so strong, anybody who sings with her pretty much just needs to keep up ! I love Kathy Mattea!

  • Kathy is superb as a folk singer, her true calling it appears, wow!

  • someone sang this in a session last night.... amazing. we all joined in in loads of harmony on the chorus, it sounded magical :D

  • Oh wow! That duet just takes your breath away.

I love Kathy Mattea to begin with; this is just the icing on the cake! Thank you!

  • I like both Dougie and her singing it-only the two of them make it as powerful as it should be. I listened to other versions but they just water it down too much. Thanks for posting.

  • WHAT A DUET BY STELLAR VOICES!!

  • It don't get better than this! And for all those who don't hear this because you don't like "folk", your loss not mine!

  • 7 people are not ready for the storm

  • I could listen to Dougie McLean all day - in fact today I am. This is something else!

  • DOBRO!!!!!

  • Dear 1046murrcal

As I have already indicated. Dougie Mclean is the author and - in Scotland if not in every country - much more significant than Kathy Mattea. In the same way John Martin songs are 'John Martin with Kathy Mattea" and not vice versa. It's time to realise that Scotland produces some of the very best musicians and that we need to acknowledge that ...

  • @DimitrisSkl hate to be pendantic... Danny Thompson.... one of the best bass players out there!!

  • Just lovely!

  • It don't get better than this! Later today I will see Wee Dougie in concert @ Banbury folk festival. I so wish that I could see these 2 together.

  • 7 imbeciles have visited this video ;

  • Schweet!

  • i love it

  • very good song

  • Wait a minute! Ready for the storm from and by Dougie Mclean - with Kathy Mattea.

  • @brownkevi what is your point brownkevi?

  • I Love this song but this song was made famous by a christian artist named Rich Mullens.

  • @ganderchris1 even if he made it famous, Dougie Maclean is the master behind it all and should be acknowledged more than Rich Mullens

  • Was lucky enough to be at a "meet the artist" with DM & see him in concert (not for the 1st time) at Cleckheaton folk festival just last weekend, what a wonderful day. Music lives & here is one of the most powerful sources of true worthwhile music. Just wish I could be lucky enough to see these two together.

  • Oy! This made me cry! beautiful!

  • Gorgeous version of this Dougie's song..Love it!

  • i love this song

    rahul frm india

+10 stars thumbs up and subscribe ofcourse

  • Great tune, great performance.

  • What? Who with Dougie? Surely Dougie wiith some wee lassie, or?

  • I've loved this one for years, just this version. It's my sailor...

  • Once in a while 2 perfect performers come together to create something greater then the sum of both of them & for just one moment in time something really, really special happens & you have just witnessed it, a very, very, very rare event.

    Skipy

  • @skipy936 Well said!

  • I was just introduced to Kathy when hearing her at Dosey Does in the Woodlands. What a superior performance! I was mesmerized by her Coal songs and LOVE the acoustic CD. I'm hooked!

  • Dougie MacLean is a great songwriter. I love this song. I used to play it in a band when I was younger. A song that will still be played in 100 years from now.

  • Oh my goodness. I grew up on Kathy Mattea, but I left country behind with my childhood. I developed a love of Celtic music when I hit my early 20's, and Deanta's version of this song has always been one of my favorites... but I also love Dougie MacLean. I've recently begun looking at the places where Celtic, Country, and Bluegrass meet, and what should I find but this absolutely beautiful piece of music. What is this video from? I'm in love!

  • @AnathemaHerem Hi there.

These songs are from the fantastic BBC SCOTLAND series called The Transatlantic Sessions,if you simply type TRANSATLANTIC SESSIONS in the search box you will see and hear some of the greatest Scots,American,Irish and Canadian singers, songwriters and musicians of our times playing music just for the sake of it,no audience no bells n whistles with flashing lights, just good music from an old house in Perthshire ,Scotland. All the dvds are available now too.Hope this helps.

  • Rich Mullins sang this too!!! I l heard Rich version 1st .I never heard of Kathy Mattea & Dougie MacLean

  • @shannonm340

Rich was a big fan of Celtic folk, and, apparently, Dougie's music. God rest Rich's soul.

  • Aly Bain, the Shetland fiddler!

  • Wow! What a combination of talented artists. This is just beautiful!

  • Is this a Stan Rogers song?I'm also from Nova Scotia,Canada. Iknow a lot of his music but was not aware this was on his songs. Love it

  • No, it's written by Dougie McLean.

  • I actually discovered that myself as soon as I wrote this comment! I know Stan Rogers music prety well, but Dougie MacLean not so much!Love this song- and all others by Kathy Mattea. Not familiar with Dougie Maclean music, other than this wonderful song. THanks for the clarification. Your name sounds very Gaelic or Celtic to me.

  • The name isn't my own - it's after a modern day poet who wrote extensively about the north west highlands of Scotland.

Dougie McLean is from Perthshire in Scotland and also wrote Caledonia for Frankie Miller. Listen to both Miller and McLean's versions elsewhere on YouTube.

  • Try the Deanta version.

  • O the waves crash in and the tide pulls out It's an angry sea but there is no doubt That the lighthouse will keep shining out To warn the lonely sailor And the lightning strikes and the wind cuts cold Through the sailor's bones to the sailor's soul Till there's nothing left that he can hold Except the rolling ocean Chorus: But I am ready for the storm, yes sir ready I am ready for the storm, I'm ready for the storm
  • Thnaks IndigoJo, Aly Beal, Aly Bain, I almost got it right! Something to do with contending with 35C heat in Australia at the time I think, addles the brain!

  • Awesome piece ... great lyrics, strong yet smooth vocals and harmony.

  • Hey Boogeebuz This is available on DVD as "The Transatlantic Sessions" including Rufus Wainwright, EmmyLou Harris, Aly Beal, Iris DeMent and heaps of others!

  • It's Aly Bain, the Scottish fiddle player. Ally McBeal is a character from an American drama of the same name.

  • I really wish this would be released on DVD

  • Excellent singer (her) and songwriter (him) great combo

  • What a brilliant and powerful song. Does anyone know any more of these sea-shanty/power ballad combos that I could listen too?

"Roots" by Show of Hands id a good one.

  • Try lookin at the BBC3 Transatlantic sessions

    Loads of great combos

  • you heard feel so near by dougie?

if you search theres a good version with him and kathy, pure amazing!

  • You should try some Seth Lakeman

  • Stan Rogers (RIP) was a well known local singer with a booming voice who often sang songs about the sea try ones like 'Northwest Passage' 'Tiny Fish for Japan' for example you will not be disappointed just do a youtube search not hard to find there are lots posted

  • Sorry no, its not - it was written by Dougie MacLean. If you google Rich Mullins + Ready for the storm, its the second one down( posted by plopperrrr) Rich Mullins in concert and saying at beginning "Actually, this is a song I did not write - Dougie MacLean got to it first".

  • You are correct. Sorry, got my names reversed.Cheers.

  • We are ready for this storm to tell the powers that be where to go. That is the storm I see. W

  • .................

  • i saw Kathy perform this with Dougie back in the mid 90's. it was his show and she made a guest appearance. i still love his solo version the best, but i'm just partial to the way his voice pulls at your heart. thanks for posting this.

  • Deanta does a better version. Mary Dillon's voice gives the shivers!

  • I have listened to Mary Dillon and she is not a singer, much less give me the shivers. She is fair at best!! Just one of those people who grew up wanting to sing and play for someone. Not a pure singers voice and really not even pleasing to listen too...

  • Just one person's opinion...but I really do like her voice.

  • One of my favorites! I am learning to sing this beautiful song myself!

  • very beautiul song. Kathy Mattea always shines when she sings. Ah, perfect

harmonies, too. The mandolin and dobro sound glorious` '

    Excellent video -10 stars,

  • @rosesredvioletsblue Sorry vote it down, wrong button..........great song! Didn't even know she existed!

  • @rosesredvioletsblue

There was a local women in Doolin, Co. Clare and when she sang her eyes sparkled. I am a photographer and I never took a photo of her knowing that there are some things that can not be duplicated in any form just experienced. It's a beautiful thing.

  • Such a pretty song! ^^

  • Brilliant. Dougie does what I attempt to do in poetry...grand lyrics but then they come in the back door waking you while you sleep.

  • This song was written by the great Rich Mullins. Dougie was a big fan of Rich's writing. You should check him out too.

  • You are wrong.

Both music and lyrics are by Dougie MacLean - as published by his own company - Limetree Arts and Music.

  • Brings a tear to this sailor's eye.

  • I love this song. Kathy's voice is haunting.

  • Danny Thompson brings calm to the storm

  • Good News. Transatlantic Sessions Original Series (Series One) now available on PAL DVD at long last

  • Brilliant

  • I like this version better than Rich,I think there is more feeling in this version then other.

  • Fantastic.

  • Dougie is the composer...Kathy is all right, but look for the version of Mary Dillon (Déanta) and compare.

I'm partial with Déanta, I think they are physicians now, a great loss.

  • superbe melodie...moment magique

  • i love the rich version of this, but this is really pretty, too.

  • Georgeous!

  • and never forget great danny thompson on bass

  • she should cover popular songs. voice is great and she is a babe

  • Great song; beautiful performance.

  • quality

  • I had only ever heard Rich Mullins sing this - always wanted to hear the man who wrote it! Wow - this song has been so important in my life. (I know, no one needed to know that. But i just "hadda" write it!)

  • Ha, it's funny, I was just about to comment on this vid and say "She sings 'you love me warm' but the original says 'you love me, Lord'". Ha, I was wrong. Rich changed it, then. Who knew? Not me! haha. Hey, I'm glad the song is so important in your life! very glad because I can relate exactly. It seeks me out now and again, like God gives it to me at just the right times. Excellent. :) Well, God bless ya. :)

  • Oh i didn't catch that! She does say that. And i definitely didn't know til you pointed it out that Rich had changed the words!! (Hey, learn something new every day, right? :-)) This song can be pretty scary to sing as a Christian - "Bring on the Scary Stuff!".

Thanks for your note! A friend recently was talking about life being too stormy and hard, so I posted Rich singing this (from the Lufkin vid - if you haven't seen that, def. check it out!!), so i ended up here. LOVE this song!!

  • I saw that Rich Mullins vid, and wow, just wow. I haven't seen much live footage of him, just his produced vids. That was great, thanks for recommending that!

  • I'm so glad you saw it!! It's always good to see Rich...raw. If that makes sense. I think the reason he didn't do more "videos" is that he just didn't like how polished they were. And they'd probably want him to wear shoes ;-) It's also cool to hear the chatter between the songs. Buy that whole vid if you have a chance - i got mine from Better Book Room in Wichita, but i bet Amazon has it now. They have everything!

  • Wonderful song!!!!

  • Gobsmacking!

  • It must be great to hear something you've written so beautifully sung.

    Two truly great talents.

  • Great to see her in Richardson Saturday.

My best on the new album.

  • Oh my gosh. I know about Cathy Mattea but I was toatally ignorant about Dougie MacClean until my good friends, twenty four years my junior, turned me on to his music. I thought that was my job. Thank You Amy and Dougie, and you too Lem. Hahahaha. I love YouTube for no other reason, except the other ones. But stop pissing me off, O.k.? Shit, damn, fu..

  • Powerful vocal...doesn't quite capture Dougie's intimacy....but an emotional performance!

  • Dougie clearly enjoys her version, from what I can see here.

    -jcr

  • Does anyone know what tuning they are using on the guitars? It does not seem to be standard. I love the voicing of the chords.

  • the tuning on the guitars is dadgad

  • She is my very favorite and has been for years. She is such a caring, loving person as well. Her work for strip mining victims and environmental issues surpasses all.Not to mention her beautiful voice.

  • everytime i heat that song it makes me shiver....sooo awesome!!!!!

  • Love this song. I would have never have learned about Dougie if I didn't see Rich Mullins do this song. His version is good also.

  • reef that mainsail........great song

  • Looove this song. Although I wonder if she mixed a little in lyrics. Never been to Scottland (in this lifetime) but Dougie moves me riiight.

  • Good news for all fans is the release of the DVD "Transatlantic Sessions: Series 3" bringing together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland to perform what has been called "the greatest backporch shows ever".

All of the six half-hour programmes from the BBC/RTÉ TV series are included, recorded in a beautiful old converted farm steading in the Perthshire Highlands.

  • This is the only version that has as much power as Dougie's solo version. Probably because Dougie's singing in this version. I appreciate how Kathy Mattea includes Dougie. She's good; I've not heard her before.

  • I've always loved this song from Kathy's "Time Passes By" album(like it better than Deanta's), but this version is very nice! Thanks for sharing this!

  • I love Dogir because of Kathy Mattea. She did a TV show I can't remember which. They sang Calidonia(sp)And more...It was ( tv special)something Lonesome...I'd like to find it....

  • What a great series this was on the BBC..maybe they will show it again or release it on DVD?

  • I have the audio CD's (simply amazing music) but I think the Sessions have been released on DVD too.

  • Saw Dougie in a pub in Berkeley, CA. Was sipping ale with fella bandmates... in Reel Time.

Thanks for this great offering. Once covered this song broadly around Chico. Message eternal!

  • Nice version; however, have ye heard of Deanta's version? Powerhouse. The best version, bar none!

    JM

  • I just went to look for it - I heard a little snippet at Amazon, and she gave me chills! Really lovely, thanks for the rec!

  • Check out Dougie MacLean Songs in youtube groups

  • Yes.. I am ready for the storm.. and give me mercy for my dreams... Don't known whether to bite a bullet or ask for vinegar.. and a nail.. But, I do known how too resist the devil and he will flee ... Hope too see you again some time..Mistaken J...Your act of kindess always reminds me not too turn away from blind faith.. because in it I found love.. morning dove 2

  • Kathy Mattea always brings such beautiful color to Dougie Maclean's songs. A great duo. Thanks for posting this.

  • Beautiful music and video! If you like this, google Eddie Delahunt. According to R Weir in Sing Out magazine Summer 2007 issue, (Delahunt's) "...'Weather the Storm' would make a fabulous bookend to Dougie MacLean's 'Ready for the Storm,' as both songs take us inside the mind of sailors lost in thought as the gale rages. Delahunt is also MacLean-like on 'Forget Me Not My Love,' a song of simple and honest emotion." Sing Out, Summer 2007

  • I love Kathy Mattea her music is very inspirational.

  • Are the Transatlantic Sessions available on DVD???? I would love to have this in my collection

  • classic, thanks for putting it on. We taped this series back in 1996 and watched it the other day - fantastic!

  • I love Dougie Maclean.. We always listened to his tape in the car when I was little.. ! He is the best !

  • Kathy. Dougie & Jerry well the hell, why didn't they record more stuff, I go crazy that only a few songs came out of their sessions . TOP RATING Jörgbaiter

  • I agree! I'd never heard of these sessions until today! Must find more! You should hear her sing this one live!

  • Way to go.

  • Total class....unbeatable

  • Hallelujah! Thank you for bringing this vid back to YouTube!!! I love it to pieces!! A million thanks! Willa

  • ... guess i'm ready for that " kind of storm " here ... too ; ) Gorgeous sea & sky visions in that footage again !

  • Fade to black....
