The one thing I always found interesting about tornado's was the fact that they can destroy one house and leave the one right next door virtually unscathed.
This was one of six F5 tornadoes that happened in this outbreak. Six F5's inside a 24 hour period. After the F5 that hit Oklahoma in 1999, it took til 2007 before there was an other tornado with a 5 rating on damage. It was the EF5 that hit Greensburg, Kansas. And Manitoba Canada also had an F5 in 2007 also. As far as I know, Canada still uses the old Fujita scale when rating damage of tornadoes.
I watched this tornado from Alpha Rd. in Beavercreek, about 5 miles W of Xenia. I was 12 and delivering newspapers on my bike, soaked by rain and bruised by hail. Looked like a fork-tailed funnel when I first saw it, but the two funnels soon joined up, pulled in another and became a giant. Then it hit arrowhead and a million shingles were in the air. Scared me silly at 5 miles. Cannot imagine what it must have been like up close.
I was in Xenia when this tornado hit. I was 16 years old. My mother had my brother and sisters and I hide under a bed as it roared over our house, crossed route 35 in Lanewood and hit the High School football field. I watched as it formed a very clear funnel and twisted the light towers of the field. I had no idea however of the devastation it made as it continued into town until I walked downtown later that day.

1970's? I liked listening to Clapton. Saw this tornado, too. Didn't like it.
