I have two 22 Calibers and love 'em. I also have two modded Epi Valve Jrs. I love those to. As for which is louder the 22 is quite a bit louder. I'd say just as loud as most any 20 watt tube amp. It also takes to distortion pedals much better than the VJr. The cool thing with the 22's is that you can crank this thing up to just past halfway with almost zero od. After that the volume doesn't really get much louder if at all. However, you do get more od.
While tube amps are indeed somehat louder than solid state (usually), the little vox amp has 4 watts. 22 watts will be around 7 dBs louder--a noticible difference. If we discount a dB or two because it's solid state, it's still going to be louder. Fianlly, a tube type amp with a small power supply will not be as loud as a solid state amp of the same wattage if it has a more robust power suply. Always listen befiore you buy and ignore myths and cliches. Don't believe what you read.
This is not a head. It is actually a power amp... which I will buy. This is just slick marketing to sell more units. ANY power amp will produce a tone.
Notice the verbage used on the EHX website concerning the 44 caliber...
All "heads" are poweramps with an input stage you may refer to as a preamp. The only reason for separate preamps/overdrives is to control volume, tone, etc. This indeed has a preamp section which includes volume and a simple tone circuit. As far as pedals go, just think of it as a "head", plug the pedal(s) in before this little head and plug in a cabinet and you're all set. I may buy one but must hear it first. The breakup in the demo doesn't sound good on my computer...duh.
@laffable It's a tiny amp head without an equalizer, or channels, or any other things. Just a level control and a switch for brightness. That would makes a poweramp with a switch for brightness.
Yes it is. It has an input for an instrument which proves it has a preamp stage for voltage amplification (gain). It has a driver stage and an output stage as well (for current incease; volts times amps equals watts). It is a head. Period. The only reason it's small is that it uses class-D digital technology (like the incredibly powerful 5-lb. Crate Power Block) so it doesn't require a big-ass power supply like a class A or AB amplifier always does. It's all about efficiency.
a hint? that was the answer!

Power rating means nothing. I bet the 4 TUBE watts in the Vox behind will be louder than 22 SOLID STATE watts

here's a question, could I use the to run my Delay between my head and cabinet?
vanhalenkid 1 year ago
youd destroy your delay. too much output.
griffinmpable 1 year ago
What should I use to do this than?
vanhalenkid 1 year ago
@vanhalenkid just run the delay before the head like normal, then run the head to the cabinet

THIS IS NOT A HEAD.
yabadabadoo68 1 year ago
@yabadabadoo68 no this is a head. you literally plug it into your speaker cabinet. you arent supposed to run this into a regular sized amp.
griffinmpable 1 year ago
@griffinmpable Head = preamp>>poweramp
This = poweramp, no preamp
thisismy7thusername 1 year ago 4
@thisismy7thusername
Incorrect. This = preamp + poweramp. It's a tiny amp head.

Head = Amp - Speakers
If it didn't have a preamp, you couldn't plug a guitar directly into it!
jimdkc 3 months ago
@thisismy7thusername can i plug in a real tube preamp, or just with pedals.

@thisismy7thusername No this is a proper amp.

This will damage your head. You may want to try the LPB-1 to boost your signal.
EHX 1 year ago
could you use this pedal to boost the input/output of a tube head, and would doing so damage it?
smileomen 1 year ago
... the instructions are clear, never plug the unit's output into a pedal, amp input or other devices!!!
if you do such a thing you'll destroy it
